    illus+ra+ianmack: Lines better than crack.

Hi! This is my sketchbook. It travels with me to the northern parts of Canada, and to everywhere else I go in my life. For the most part, everything you see here has happened to me or been something that I've seen. Not only do I consider this practice but I also consider it a journal.

Crits and comments are more than welcome. I hope to hear from you!

    Ian Mack

Sorry images don't begin until pg. 4 I think.

First images! These are a couple quick grabs from my sketchbook. I'll scan in some full pages of figure drawings once I find a page I'm willing to show.

New weekly assignments. We are to do tonal studies of the paintings by some famous artists. Since we have to do five a week I'm going to choose a new artist each week and see what I can get out of his compositions, etc. First up, is Caravaggio.

And of course, more gesture action. That box in the second img is what our daily compositions are supposed to look like. *I think*

You'll be seeing a change in my drawings from here on in. We have a new teacher and he has asked me to start taking my figures further. I guess what I've been doing is only the first step and he would like me to start fleshing out the figures.

I believe the figures in the compositions are what he is looking for. I don' know. ^_^

Not too much for now...I've had some other projects taking up my time. Mostly colour mixing excercises which aren't worth uploading but I hope to show you a study of a Durer picture by tomorrow.

Here's a bigger update than usual. I think I can finally start letting loose in my sketchbook. Stray from the path as it were. Just have to keep the output up!

These are daily Compositions. I'm spending about 20 min on each. Any suggestions/crits on my composition is most appreciated!

I'm concentrating on facial gestures this week to get a jump on the learning curve. We've begun doing this in my life drawing class and it's been interesting! I found that I've been staying on the surface too much so these ones reflect an effort to get inside the form.

M: Most of these are from life...of people I see from the streetcar, or people while I wait for the streetcar. Some are from books I find in my school lounge. Thanks for commenting!

Man I still need ALOT of practice.
In fact...later today I'm heading out to the subway. There is group of illustrators that meet up every sunday to do some sketching there. Should be fun!

    Another batch of Compositions

    One More
An assignment in Gauche. We chose 4 colours of the same brilliance to create a sense of depth in a scene. Any comments on this one would be great. It's been slow progress getting used to this medium.

    Subway drawing was fantastic!
I saw such a variety of people just sitting on the car from one end of the line to the other. Seeing other ways of drawing and different perspectives on it was also quite interesting.

    And another Composition

    Work Week!
Work week is basically my reading week and I'll be spending it @ my parents home in Ottawa. So no posts for the next week! Not that I'm going to stop drawing but I won't be around a scanner.

Whoo! What a break. I'm still sore from skiing. Tried ski blades for the first time and I love the things. They are so eas to pick up and learn that I was in the glades on my second run(I'm normally a boarder). Mont Tremblant was lkooking good as always and I have a few ideas for pictures that you'll see pretty soon.

I tried sketching some cars on the way down to Ottawa as well and I think there is an improvement. A mild one...I don't know how much character/substance I'm able to give my vehicles just yet.

My daily comps have changed. I've begun using a red pencil to rough out the image first but I don't think that fully explains the change I'm seeing.

Overall..I think my work is a little weaker over the past week. I'm going to do what I can do to improve once again.

Composition Done in pencil...if my teacher allows me...I'll do a few more like this with the intention of pushing for more values. I think this one is too contrast-ee.

Guache: A study of the depth using just two colours, white and black.
