    Utopia redesigns

    Utopia was/is an isometric SimCity-RTS-funny_aliens game for the Amiga. It is not a very good game, the interface sucks, it's sluggish and the micromanagment is especially cumbersome. It is however still the best game in its genre, because it is alone. It will probably stay alone too, things being as they are. I guess /|\TARI - Infogramles owns the licence now.

    So, I made some redesigns out of nostalgia. The game art and text are contradictory so my redesigns are 1/3 ingame gfx, 1/3 text description and 1/3 my touch and tweak. Some species are from the New Worlds expansion disk.

    VANACANCIAN (all the species have long and stupid names), 1984-ish robed mutated undead-ish.

    SOOMANIIS. I'd like to think that these ones can shoot lasers out of their eyes, cuz it sort of looks like they can. Made 2 variants. I think they live in an insect hive society.

    PARILLATE - Victorian tech steampunk furries... I hate furries so I tried to make something less plain-catface-on-human-body of it. I'm kinda pleased with the dress-armour silhouette, but when I'm pleased I always hate it a week later.

    I Really like that last one. All of them are good, but that one just stands out. I think you should flesh out the 2nd piece more.

    J/k, these rock. Would be much cooler if I were oldschool enough to know about the game

    sketches WIP-> are you doing some finished works out of this (or more), or did you just think it wasn't enough 'own' work in these?

    I really dig the Eldorians. Remind me of the Vrusk in Star Frontiers, but way cooler. I like how they are "centauroid" but they occupy a smaller spatial footprint. They seem elegant but tough atthe same time.

    hehe so different favourites huh? I'll try to refine the obvioulsly sketchy parts.

    LUCRATIANS - WIP. They're reptiles, have no feelings and are generally unsympathetic, high tech level. They looked like a purple laborador dog in the game, so I tried to make something more menacing and superior of it.

    I'll see if I can post some screenshot. The game can be found legally on back2roots (.adf images, you need an amiga emulator like WinUAE and the kickstart stuff).

    THe game is very cliche already, uses a lot of archetypes. I think there needs to be a solid base of familiar stuff, and then you can afford making some unfamiliar stuff... relativity is important. There needs to be reference points.

    Here's the game in map mode. No action going on.

    CATALYTES - Described as smooth, whiteskinned, featureless, big eyes, tall, worships triangles. Then the art contradicts that with a pic of a robot. I tried to make some streamlined thing with a DrDoom mask and Tron markings (triangles).
    (Pencils, 150ppi scan btw. They're about half as big on paper)

    CHEVANNO - Knights, fantasy, their skin is their armour. 4 arms. You can barely see it but on the sketch they're holding a hint of a sword with the smaller arms. I made a variant with japanese-style-long-tank-tracks-for-arms arms.

    RAKO GORDA - Zerg / Arachnids I think. Many different variants controlled by some larger variants. The smaller ones are not very intelligent but I still gave them a rifle. I toyed with the idea of a rolly polly cuz there's something mentioned about thick back armour. There's a large scorpion variant which seems to be controlling the smaller ones over great distances, so I added an antenna thing on the small soldier variant.
    They build mud shelters in a desert terrain. I'm not too good at environments, so the pic has some things that makes me uneasy. It's a bit gritty, the values seem strange etc.

    O yeah! I tried to play this game when I was a kid... couldn't figure it out...

    My favorite... proabably the small Soomaniis.

    Keep them coming, this is really cool! Love to you flesh out the CHEVANNO.

    Beautiful!! And I LIKE the landscape! It has a sort of WoW look to me, with a sort of charm to the bright colors.

    I think my favorites are the Soomaniis! They are wonderful! I would also like to see the Chevanno finished. They sound really neat!

    Any progress on that Star Control game redesign?

    Yeah the Chevanno has a little potential I think. It's strange how I always paint up the thumbnails I'm the least happy with first. Maybe I'm afraid of ruining the good ones, or maybe I like the challange of doing something from bad sources.

    SC project. I can have a few hundred on screen with OpenGL, all with alpha, scaled, rotated etc. I can also use various blending modes and opacity.

    Proximity check thingy I coded, should be able to handle a few thousand objects when optimized. There's no need for 'zones' or different game layers. Everything can be happening simultaneously, like on a huge huge RTS map.

    haha i remember that game. mainly two things. first i wasn't able to figure it out back then (i was young) and secondly the soundtrack. there was that one classical tune that i still can't get out of my head. do you know the real
    name and coposer? anyway keep up what your doing!

    edit: ok i vaguely remembered that coolio used a sample of that tune once, it´s pachelbel - canon in d

    Looks fantastic. I can remember playing this when i was younger. Tried it again not so long ago, and i just didn't have the patience for it. I guess you get used to better :/

    How did things go with your re-design of Exile? I used to love that game and the stuff you did looked ace.
