MEDIUM: ink washes and brush pens on toned paper
    SIZE: 17 x 22
COMMENTS: Was going for that old school children's book look

MEDIUM: Prismacolor Markers and ballpoint pen
    SIZE: 9x16
COMMENTS: This piece was very fun but also very tough because of the finals going through at the same time. BUt good times.

MEDIUM: India Ink and Micron pens
    SIZE: 12" x 17"
COMMENTS: I was trying to go for a more futuristic setting, my interests are more in the technical and mechanical, and the creature design is a reflection of that. I had a lot of fun working on this with the sketchgroup though.

MEDIUM: India ink and ballpoint pen and sharpy
    SIZE: 16x9
COMMENTS: Animals are tired about the forest getting cut down and the animals are tired of it!

MEDIUM: ink wash on toned paper with white ink highlights
    SIZE: 20Wx15.5H
COMMENTS: I went with a mythological theme for this piece. Im tired, I can't think right now!!!

MEDIUM: Ink wash and CCAD pen!!! yay!
    SIZE: 16 x 22
COMMENTS: It's a turtlesque monster...with an underbite...and feeding ventricles coming out of it's back. Was going for something bizarre and unique. It was fun to develop, and I'm somewhat happy with the product. Word Nerd .

    MEDIUM: all ballpoint pen (papermate)
    SIZE: 22x11
COMMENTS: its a winter scene! (i hate the snow) and these mounted elephants are returning from battle to their home bass just a few miles away. yeah.. it took me a long time to do...

This contest took a lot outta me and once again, I went with an envy theme like last time! hehee

Here's the story for my piece:

My bird creature was born with arms instead of wings and grew up watching everyone else in his community flying in the air, gracefully.
Infuriated and feeling like an outsider, he goes on to do something radical and "made" himself a wing!
Now he's hunting for one more....
When he returns to his community, they'll see the monster he has become...

    Awww poor fellow.....

    To my SVA friends,

SNOWSFALL - Great use of the brush to achieve those dynamic strokes. Good action and movement! Just work on seperating the subject matter from the background. POP those subjects out!

STIO - I name you, the master of hands. Really, you rock at them. I'm always a fan of them bony fingers.
You got a unique design in your piece. Good flow

JWORIAN - Work on connecting the two figures together. Creating a believable interaction between characters is a difficult task.
But...that is one helluva cute lion face....makes me want to...stretch and squeeze and smush it to my face!

GERBERA - I LOVE that face! Now that's called a warrior babe's expression! The back of the creature needs more defining forms

WINJER - hahaaa, I like yours.
We both have the wide eyed shock expression (look closely at my girl's eye and you'll see it) with something in their ass! For that, I give you cheers

    To my CCAD peepz!

MATYAS! Holy shit bro. That lighting is just.........DAMN!
    hahaaa
    *bows*

SMOKE KING! Big props to the Chance bro...man, I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE with your piece. Seriously! Stop trying to change the world! They ain't ready for your domination!
You got some intense creature designs...and yet, they are only conveyed through the most minimalist of shapes! Impressive.

JAIR! We had a crazy time preparing this thunderdome tonight! I hope you learned some things about formatting codes....one step at a time to becoming a nerd. Be proud.
You know what I'm gonna say 'bout your piece. Great atmosphere, love the tracks receding into the distance, etc etc. You've heard it before

Moccomouse! The first one finish! I like how the head pops out. You just HAD to do sci-fi.....
    Geek

KENJI! killer design with your piece. I love the bird concept. I should make one for real so I can lure a wolf and get me a fur coat

SPRAY! Your values and precise brush work is admiring. Critique: Vary the grass more. Give it some "OOMPH" Especially where the feet touches the ground. You want to give that area some interest and actually make it look like the feet's pushing into the ground.

    Alright!
It's chillax time for only a little while for me

and where's LAYIL's piece! She's friends with Jason Manley and she doesn't turn a piece in for him to judge!? *GASP!*

Where are the judges? Nice job guys. To my CCAD homeboys, nice job as always, you deserve this break. SVA, interesting pieces and a variety of uses of different techniques with ink.

Brian, you know I'm from down under. What you don't know is that I wrestle alligators and box kangaroo's on the weekends and carry a machate in my trousers, haha. Anyway, you have a good break to man. Next semester, it's on.

Great work all around!!! Both schools!!

CCAD won this one though by my count, I pulled all the pix on my comp to judge the works, and AFTER I looked who was on what side. I figured that would be as objective as possible. Obviously judging any kind of art is always tricky, because personal taste/prefernce plays into it alot. There really is no way to get around that, with that being said I tried to be as objective as possible.
Personal favorites out of this round are Den, Kenji, and Stiocray.
Merit points were given for things that didnt fall into any category, "eyecandy" mostly. You can pick apart anything when you have to (like in the categories), but if a piece still rings a bell...then it got merit points.
Winjer got one because I laughed out loud when I saw it =)

    here's the count thinger..... ;

    CCAD total = 163 points
SVA total = 91 points (2 no shows here really hurt here....)

quick props to kenji for my favorite piece here (line quality and drawing are A-okay!), spray nation for extreme close-up (I like the figures vs. creature size dynamic, too) Matyas for detail overload explosion and genius of hard work award (too much detail, though, without the basic separation and design flow you need to make it read), Stiocray for best composition and nice line quality, and Smoke King for #1 style points. Oh yeah, and Den had the neatest concept too, even though it's really creepy. The linework kind of cookie-cutting your details out was a big problem though, IMO. Great effort guys

first off let me say that some of you have done things which are really fukking nice. truly. CCAD is the clear and obvious winner from my perspective. I have graded harshly only because i hope you all will strive for greatness. great turnout...sva...time to step it up. I don't think ccad will have any difficulty taking on art center.

    DEN
    Concept 10
Composition and Design 6 (design of little things..ie the way horny protrusions grow out of the body of the creature or the way the wing/cloth strap is fixed to the horny thing could be improved)
Technique 5 (love the way the bg is handled but the stuff on the ground is less worked out)
Other Merits 1 for gross out factor....ie the way the creatures arm joint pokes the girls stomach out. ...shows thinking for sure.
    TOTAL POINTS:22

    KENJI
    Concept 8
Composition and Design 7 (blacks and blues are nicely designed shapes but not integrated into the overall design as well as they could be, thus making the image feel less unified as a whole.)
    Technique 4
Other Merits 1 -clean line work for visual clarification
    TOTAL POINTS:20

    MOCCO
Concept 7 (more time on archi design and environmental design would have helped...the little figure looks like you didnt want to design it)
Composition and Design 5 (things are nicely placed but values are not used as well as they could be for mood, flow of eye etc...)
    Technique 3
    Other Merits --1
    TOTAL POINTS:16

    SMOKE KING
Concept 7 ...not enough idea development happening in design of costumes and characters...almost too much focus on selling it with dramatic shape and composition instead. this is effective but when i go look for visual ideas and design of the elements in the picture, things are obscured by composition.

Composition and Design 8 (very nicely integrated composition of light and dark shapes into the overall image...still feels a bit busy based on the nature of working with only two values and little edge variation on shape for focus...but the graphiky quality of it is nice as well.)
    Technique 5-
Other Merits 2 best design of pictorial compositional value shapes of the bunch
    TOTAL POINTS:22

    MATYAS
    Concept 11
Composition and Design 6 (placement of all narrative elements helps push perspective very well, action and details are strong...something off about the lighting overall which makes each element seem not as well unified into the ATMOSPHERE as it could be. sky and water looks rushed.)
    Technique 3
Other Merits 3- best use of texture suggestion and organic design on creatures skin and anatomies.
    TOTAL POINTS:23

    SPRAY
Concept 10 (not sold on anatomical elements of creature and humans even tho there is stylization happening)
Composition and Design 7 (nicely placed may narrative elements within the scene without it being overly busy.)
    Technique 4
    Other Merits --
    TOTAL POINTS:21

    JAIR
Concept 6 - idea development is not as strong as the others in terms of "fantasy". it is a bit of a cliche idea.
Composition and Design 5 -could benefit from a better feel of lighting...it simply doesnt feel like light coming from the sky hitting the ground or the like...
Technique 4 - most elements show time spent and hard work...almost overly cared for in some areas. ie..the snow and footprints have time spent but the characters could have been more interesting...must learn to pick battles and put effort in areas of interest more than those which are less important to the image. just not sold on character design..or elephant costuming etc...
Other Merits --1 -image shows your effort and that you care about your work. MUST SPEND MORE TIME IN DESIGN AND BRAINSTORMING OF IDEAS
    TOTAL POINTS:16

    SVA

    WINJER
Concept 2 nothing fresh here in terms of design. two points for picking up the pencil.
    Composition and Design 2
    Technique 2
Other Merits 2 points for the smile
    TOTAL POINTS:8

    SNOWSFALL
Concept 4 hard to tell whats going on...not a lot of time spent on design...must spend time on idea development and design of elements.
Composition and Design 6 placement and such is fine...enjoyed some of the water colors effects...values put in good places...decent movement of values...but it doesnt read well because values are balanced for overall page design but lacking subtlety in their way of pulling the eye around.
    Technique 4
    Other Merits --
    TOTAL POINTS:14

    JWORION
Concept 4 looks like you had fun doing it...not original in idea development...needs more time spent thinking in your own worlds...
Composition and Design 3 perspectives are wierd..which is ok..but cant quite tell if its on purpose...
Technique 3 -shows that you need to be doing more art if you want your stuff to look more competent. its obvious you are not creating enough.
Other Merits -- figure, animal, etc...all needing better proportions or more interesting ones at least. not enough time spent sketching and working things out. dont settle on being happy with making just "anything"
    TOTAL POINTS:10

    STIOCRAY
Concept 9- another example of more time being spent in development of ideas on a visual level...count how many ideas there are...you simply need more..or more interesting looking ones.
Composition and Design 7 very nice use of linework and such...cant decide if you want to render things in a graphic or realistic way...totally dig the hand in the forground.
Technique 4 -stylization borderline inconsistent but still something attractive about it...but media handling is good.
    Other Merits --
    TOTAL POINTS:19

    GERBERA
Concept 7 nice start but not enuff time spent on design of armor etc...
Composition and Design 6 -could have been better if it had a full value range...some sparks of darks and lights would have set it off..as is it looks unfinished.
    Technique 3
Other Merits -- presentation was weak..suggests lack of effort.

To Everyone who turned out for this:
Great works guys! Especially since this really for nothing more than personal satisfaction AND it coincided with finals. I’m scared of you CCAD guys!

Basically I joined because you gotta show some school pride! But really the chance to have my work critiqued by these artists was enough of an incentive to put in a little work. Thanks to the Judges to take the time to view our work! Jason’s crits make me want to work harder!

GOOD LUCK WITH ART CENTER CCAD (I hope you get pounded)…jk!

    Awsome Battle People!!!

vigostar-- hmmmm... ballpoint pen battle... thats sounds awsome man... but let it be small cause we got art center comin up! but seriously PM me fosho!

--jason manley... thanX agian for the critique! i really couldnt tell why i didnt like my piece but you explained it perfectly! yeah i guess i leaned more on my ability to render with ballpoint rather than come up with a better concept... i'll keep that im mind for next time!...a good critique is always needed!

-to everyone! great job! especially CCAD im really impressed with the improvement from round one! and i cant wait to have another sketch-group or jus chillin till 5a.m!!!!

as for me im divin into my artbooks and techin myself the basics again!

Wow! I would love being critiqued like that!

Jason and Nicolas, are there any other opportunities where we can get critiqued like that?! I would definitely participate.

Wow thanks for the critique Jason. Dang I knew I should of taken the moon out cuz it wouldn't even been in the frame of reference, but I thought it would be a nice design element, but now it just bothers me. I cant wait for a wacom this holiday so I can get freshened up digitally to take on art center, cuz my digital stuff is kinda weak right now.
