Cthulhu Chess set
I finished this Cthulhu-themed chess set last night. I've been working feverishly on this for a while now, and I think it was completely worth it! It is totally hand-made by myself from sculpting a chunk of wax to cutting out little felt pieces for the feet.
This one is going to go up for sale on eBay tonight, but I am keeping the moulds so I can make more.
The kings (Cthulhu) have precious stones for eyes; the white piece has spherical lab-created rubies, the black piece has salt water pearls.
The queen is Nyarlathotep (has a single large tentacle for a face).
The bishops are Father Dagon/ Mother Hydra (take your pick).
The knights are Hounds of Tindalos (the knights move in angles, and in the mythos the hounds are supposed move through angles).
The rooks are shoggoths
The pawns are Deep Ones.

Might be a dumb question - do you sculpt them originaly this size, or larger?

I so wanna buy this...make sure to post the ebay link so we can follow the bidding!

Thanks guys! I'm a bit proud of this after all the work I've done on it.
They are originally sculpted this size, the king is 4" tall.
I willpost the link to the auction as soon as I get it put up, sometimes I think it takes longer to post an auction than to make whatever it is I'm selling.
I'm torn between starting with a low bid and having a reserve price or just making it a Buy It Now type of thing.

Gorgeous! Two tentacles up!
I was wondering what where your visual inspirations while making these, did you have in mind any particular artists take on the mythos? or rather developed these straight from the source material. Thing is, Im really curious about the process behind this cool project of yours, hope ya dont mind.
And yeah, hope you get some serious $$$ for these on e-bay, you deserve it.

Thanks, I hope so too!
I didn't have any particular mythos artist in mind when I made these, but I think perhaps a bit of Giger influence crept in there. Really I was as much influenced by real life deep sea creatures as anything, and I simply tried to stay true to Lovecraft's descriptions while trying to make them look interesting.
Edited to add the auction link;

you are underselling yourself my friend...
those pieces are slick as hell...

LOL, I know I am. I plan to release them in local game stores for $1300. I am fairly confident that the bids will go up or I wouldn't list it that low.

omg, you need to mass produce these.

These are amazing man. The photo of the whole set looks good but if you have any pro photographer friends, I would get them to take some close ups for you. It looks like either the light or the exposure settings are bleaching out your details on the white set. Hope you rake it in on ebay.

Yes, I was trying hard to get these photographed so I could list it today. Dang winter solstice, I only had a few hours today while the sun was shining. The group came out good, I had them in shadow with ambient light from the sky. But I tried moving them into full sun for the close-ups since the light was too dim in the shadow, and I ended up with washed out pics. By the time I got them on the computer the sun was already too low for more pictures. I'll try taking some better close-ups tomorrow.
