Timpas Mugglies (Daily Update)
Inspired by Mr. Android himself, I shall commence on a SP Journey, probably not a 1000, but, I will be updating EVERY day a while.
OK, so this Is my first real SP, wherer Ive taken it seroiusly. Took awhile, bout 3 hrs, but Im setting a timelimit, only because I get lost and all of a sudden 3 hrs have passed and Im like "what happened"
So first one, I had trouble with the values, Kraft paper is shit, but fun to draw on! Also, Its seems to me to be a bit too leaning.
And I have a stick in my neck, googly eyes and a very strange Adams apple. Yea, the picture really captured my features alright.
And here is the second one, started good, but had a problem with the eyes, so I put them in later, which, inevitably fucked it up.

Hello, Tim! very nice portrait of you, good similarity, and I really like the expression with which you are looking from the paper. It's alive, persistent, intense, you have a question in your eyes.
Speaking about eyes. I don't know if your eyes are realyy set with a little angle to vertical line of your nose, like your eye from my right side, its outside corner is lower than inner one. So the other eye should be slightly slanted with inner corner of eye higher than the opposite one. Well, it's not a big thing anyway and I might be wrong.
This portrait has hints on a character, this stretched neck, straitforward, searching for contact glance, tension in many muscles, especially the sad wrinkle between your eyebrows, wind tossed hair. Yes, looks like you are walking in the cold windy day and you are full of sad thoughts, or worried, or thinking very persistently about something, not pleasant thoughts.
You should be proud, very emotional portrait.

not bad man i like it. For the next one do one where it looks more like you are a strung out heroin junkie. that was my impression of you. also did your dad beat you for losing his camera

Thanks Sve and Winjer. I was tryin to look hard, hehe, maybe I come off as if im contemplating suicide every day at the bus stop...
Haha, no but I did have to pay for a new one. No big deal, until I was in the store, got the camera, looked to my left, and saw the new 30 gb Ipod with colorscreen for 50 buck LESS than the camera that I just bought. So I coulda been sittin here lookin at that. Damn it!
Ok the time limit today went out the window, spent about 5 hours on this bastard, trying to learn waters. I was gonna do a painting today aswell...
I no now NOT to overwork them. Im goin Arkadystyle for my next one. I have yesterdays here, but Its not done, eyes and nose are givin me gripe. As with this one. But its like 90% complete, so I aint slackin! Much.
I promise that Ill do a dirty heroin pic for ja Winj!

Not bad Tim...these seem to be improving with each one. One thing I might do is hold up the drawing to a mirror...this way you can see things that are lopsided or off a lil bit. Stuff you may not catch right away.
Oh..I am gonna send ya a PM soon...aren't you excited

Hey man. Are these all self portraits?? How are you drawing them, using a mirror or taking pictures? Self portraits are tuff. I'm not sure what you look like but they seem to be good! As soon as i get the guts I'm going to try some.
Trying softening the corners of your mouth. In a lot of them, your the corners of your lips have a sharp shape to them. You have handled it better in the Dec. 2nd posting. Also, like how you handled the hair and applied tone in that one. Good expression too.
December 18th, 2005 #18
Thansk incolorinred, they are indeed self portraits, they are done in front of a mirror. I like wearing my jacket, or a towel or something around my nec, as it helps me with placemen.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the lips, ill keep it in mind for tomorrows!
Man, I sure am having trouble placig the eyes. As soon as I get it in PS, I see emediatley that the problem is ( in this case the eye to the right is too low, and not enough at an angle) but in a mirror I dont see it, my whole face just looks distorted.
Note to self: Wait with the fixative until after I hav eimported in to PS

hey tim, that last one has great structure, but you look like a bum in it. I think that the lack of any real value scale just seems to read as dirt on your face. Great progress though.
December 21st, 2005 #23
BUt I am a bum! I was only acting fancy pants in NYC. Do you know how many cans I had to collect to buy that airplaneticket?!
Thanks for the crits and encouragement. I dont really know how to handle value yet, Im kinda chicken with it. Ill push it harde next time. I mean, notice how I hardly ever even try to render the hair. Im shakin in my boots man!
December 22nd, 2005 #24
Don't trip dude, just do it. If t looks bad chuck it and start over. Your stuffs looking good so far, Getting a lot of practice in thats good.
Definitley work on the values though, You don't have to use the whole scale,
just a few. I read some where on here to use values 1-4 and 7-10 the middles tend to mud up the picture. I think the second is your stongest so far.
-also remember form shadows are lighter that cast shadows, not sure if thats a form shadow or a cast shadow on the cheek.
hope I made some sense.
Ill keep my eyes on this thread to see the progress.

Thanks Los, Ill jump in the deep end! Tomorrow... Procrastinator anyone?
Ill try my best. Here I decided to try and get values, but I think i failed, well Im pretty sure. They where done in 5- 10 min, no pencils, just the water c´s.
Bottom one is Prismacolor stick,
hmm, this started out shit, but I think I managed to salvage it a bit. In fact, Im getting quite good att save thing that start out looking terrible. Dont know what that means, but at lest its not the other way round yet! Still, eyes and shading people, eyes and shading... And mouth and nose. and Hair! ahh yes, the hair.
Tell you what. tomorrow Im gonna start by picking apart my nose. How bout that?
December 23rd, 2005 #26
You have a very transfixing gaze man. It is good stuff so far .
I am liking the water c's but I think post 21 is your strongest sp to date. All the values seem to be in close relation yet you were able to catch the forms in the mouth/ nostril region nicely.
Well wishes on your sp odyssey.
December 23rd, 2005 #27
Thanks awshux and Jens!
December 23rd, 2005 #28
there ya go, I'm starting to see some range in your values. was that that hard?
oh by the way, you never responded to my email about the Cooper Union letter. ASS!!!
December 24th, 2005 #29
Thanks Arkady, Im trying!
And I emailed you about the letter, (it was to FIT btw)
