Here's a nasty bit of noodling at SB group last night.
Hey Dave just a quick note..will post responses after the color version...but suffice it to say I took your advice..and dropped the opacity and changed the color of the line work...will see if it's worthy of posting by noon my time.
    Cheers all!

Cold: Thanks for the kind words man, I appreciate that. As anyone can testify my colors have been and are still mostly rat-shit. But I hope I have my walker and my feet pointed on the right path. Thanks for stoppin by. I will have to make it over to your SB.
Dave: Sorry my friend for taking this long to get back to ya....but yeah that's some freaky ass zombie death stare from beyond the grave comin on there bud! Lovin the glow coming off of him. The hair and definition in the forms is way cool...not sure what the martini olives are doing floating around his head..but...cest las vis.....

On that very happy note...I have to put the SB away for a while as work's siren call is ever more demanding. I only wish it were populated with hot women...but alas...it's a goddam sausage factory....
But worry not, I'll be hanging about and dropping lines on everyones books.
Keep up the great work all. Cheers!

Dave: Man..I can't express the thanks for all the time and encouragement you've put in on this clunk head. It would take me a lifetime to repay a tenth of or even a shadow of the quality of advice you've given me. Cheers to you sir!

Brendan: Let me catch both of your posts in one go.
Thank you for the kind words man...I'm on my way to your sb btw. As for the textures I wasn't going to hit him up with any simply because there is so much goin on in terms of his skin and the collar. If you think it would benefit him..I will definitely give it a go.
Mike V: Hey big man, long time no see...I hope all's well on your front. I know you're having surgery and wish you the best along with a very speedy recovery. But also, shipping out to Japan...wow! I'm sure it will be a vast well of inspiration for you. If you find a way...keep posting while you're over there. Thanks for the kindness!
Tensai: I am humbled before your words. Sorry to hear about shitting yourself...I can only recommend a quick change of underoos...LOL
j/k. I appreciate all of your encouragement and thoughfulness.

I'll throw it out there to you all...do you think this final image has the chops to stand up to the finally finished section? If so...I'll post it..but if not...please dig in and tell me what needs work.

Wow! Love the 5th installment!! You're doin' this in painter, right? If you can, do me a flavor and open it up in Photoshop. If you're in CS2, go to IMAGE>ADJUST>Shadow/Hilights - default - just to see what it looks like.
I'd also be interested in seeing what IMAGE>ADJUST>Auto Levels or Auto Color would do. And if you're not in CS2, then this is what I'd alternately suggest. Kinda fun to tweak out to these algorithms at times.

    Keep it goin, bud!
    Cheers!

I don't think it needs textures, but it's just me. The one thing that's been bugging me since V2.0 is his left eye (our right) go back over the darkest areas of that eyeball with a low opacity dark green. The reds in the eye pop off of the greens, which is fine in the midtones and all but the brightest of highlights, but the shadows should be a little more unified with the rest of the piece.

All in all, though, this piece is showing huge leaps forward for you in terms of color. Simply killer, brau!

If you're not going to be playing with contrast/levels in photoshop, then I'd also recommend going back and popping in some slightly darker darks-- in the area where his left eye socket meets the bridge of the nose, just below the chin, in the deepest crevices of all those crazy face wrinkles. Right now your shadows are all at 7 or 8, and a couple 10's here and there would really give it some pop!

no - for a finished piece i would say you need to at least throw in a BG behind that sucker. rough, abstract, scanned splatters, whatever - but get rid of that emptyness and complement those colours on your head instead of watering them down with white.

or thats what i think at least.

Alrighty..I tried to incorporate everyone's suggestions.
Hit the poor bastard with: +5 in the Brightness/Contrast pane. Sorry to say dave when I tried the Shadow/Highlights my nards nearly retreated. The whole thing went shitty.
Also ala ben hit the eyeball up with a touch of low opacity green.
If it's any consolation Brendan..the dodge flame near his head has texture.
I went with a warmish background simply because his head is such a strong green...so better to play with the complimentary scheme than uniform. Oh well...
    Cheers all.
    Tensai and Bradley: thanks guys.

Nice, you got photoshop figured out! You really got the coloring down now. I did a little paint over, hope you don't mind. I just got rid of the outline on the side so that it merges into the background,.... just wanted to see what happens.

oh...now there's a CT sketchgroup? lol....well, i'm going to find out who's left handed and has tinnitus and form a sketchgroup called left-out-dead-ringers.
i agree with josh's idea here - dougbot has a cool tut on how he does a background paintover to get rid of the hard outlines. what josh is doing is atmospheric, but i'd step it back a notch to have some edging. i'd also give more vertical canvas to this illustration to give some...pun intended...head room.
you've made me proud, mike! gotta love these support groups for man boobs.
    cheers!

Dave: Then I only request that I be a charter member of the "Left-out-dead-ringers!" or "L.OU.DE.R!" But I'm sure the first meeting will be filled with alot of hand gestures and more than one finger getting flashed...could get ugly. LOL!
Ok..so improvements then are head room and incorporate douggies work with backgrounds. Check!
Josh: Hey bro...thanks for that...it looks interesting and he sinks into his environment alot more. Cool. Lemme experiment with him and see if anything worth posting comes from it. Thanks again.

Here's a wip for the Clockwork Colossus. Hope to getter buttoned up soon.
Also I gotta respond to all the kindness you guys are showing...
    Cheers

Aether : On the desolate moon of Neo-Olympus, those rare few that have proved themselves beyond the wildest imaginings of mortals in the areas of, word, deed, or thought have been given a place to rest at last when their days have come to an end. The cracked and shattered hell planet of Tartarus is unfitting their deeds in life so they are interred upon a similarly lifeless but eerily antithetical world. To safeguard them in their eternal slumber though, a distant daughter of Hesiod was determined to construct a colossus. So came to be Aether, the pure upper air; and to be that which bound and repelled Tartarus, the darkness.
