Good lord, you're spoiling us with these regular updates

I'm seeing the interesting optical mixing thing again, is this brushed in flat or with a layer method?

Anyways, thanks for the daily inspiration m@.

Sorry, what I meant is the little bits of blue and red - colors that don't necessarily make sense; sort of optical mixing. Are they brushed in just like that, or with a layer method like overlay etc? Do you use layer methods often?

Hey folks, sorry for the lack of updates lately. I've gotten a new job which I love, doing concept art full time on a great new video game IP at Darkworks. So, when I come back home, I don't really feel like drawing much anymore I'll continue doing some stuff here and there though. Also been working on my TD entry a bit.
    -----

    Ryno23MJ : thanks man!

Idiot Apathy : I see! well I like to add as much color variation as I can without giving a too weird feeling. So, sometimes it's just brushed like that (by picking various hues), or with brushes with more or less random color variation. I use layers with overlay / screen/ color dodge etc quite often yes.

Art_Addict : Technique is not all... finding an original idea can seriously affect the interest of a picture

    Queensoul : thanks.

    -ThePenciler- : thank you!

Main Loop : thanks man, glad you enjoy them. ABout custom brushes, well, personally I think it's a long process of experimentation to find the brushes that suit your style and working habits. Im always creating new brushes, stopping using some , finding new ideas etc.I barely use the brushes I used some months ago (except for the basic ones - round tip pressure on opacity etc). The only tip I could give is experiment, experiment

    majinpunisher : thanks!

Pixeldragoon : yes as in Matt, my first name is Mathias. I know, lame teenage nickname, that nickname followed me for a long time >< hard to change those habits.

Burning Eyes : I'll have a look in your sketchbook!

Dile : hehe, yeah I often use sharpen.

    twistedink13 : thanks

Chandan : glad to hear that!

glynn james : thanks. I'm gonna try to start experimenting other stuffs from now though.

OBX : thanks. Well for light, it's a lot of "tips" that you gotta have in mind while painting. With experience you kinda forget them and do them automatically hehe... But you gotta keep in mind ALL your light sources (including large reflective/radiating areas like lit walls, or diffuse areas like the atmosphere), their intensity, position, temperature, scale, etc.. and also the properties of material, the way they reflect light, etc.

Ive just spent about an hour looknig through all the images in here again, what can I say. Fucking great, really nice use of texture and creation of mood in a scene.

This is still one of my favourites http://mv.cgcommunity.com/images/valleyscene.jpg
I'd love to get my hands on a few of your brushes. Are they all custom made or do you grab a couple from resource sites?

Right im gonna go do some painting, keep up the inspiring thread.

thnx for clarifying that for me. practice practice practice i guess. im just in awe at that last paint u did with the ship that broke through the ground. Ur just so on top of everthing u paint. u seem to add those lil details that just make the piece pop and in more ways that one. for example something simple like the roots shooting through the ground. and then adding how they play with the light entering the cavity. just draws me in. mabey other ppl dont have this appreciation and i dont know if wen u painted it u had intensions of suggesting that. either way u stuff really snags my eyes, and its those little elements that do it. thnx again. and post more!
