E.O.W Round #178: Nazgûl Nest
E.O.W Round #178: Nazgûl Nest VOTING POLL
“Those who used the Nine Rings became mighty in their day, kings, sorcerers, and warriors of old. They obtained glory and great wealth, yet it turned to their undoing. They had, as it seemed, unending life, yet life became unendurable to them. They could walk, if they would, unseen by all eyes in this world beneath the sun, and they could see things in worlds invisible to mortal men; but too often they beheld only the phantoms and delusions of Sauron. And one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and to the good or evil of their wills in the beginning, they fell under the thralldom of the ring that they bore and of the domination of the One which was Sauron's. And they became forever invisible save to him that wore the Ruling Ring, and they entered into the realm of shadows. The Nazgûl were they, the Ringwraiths, the Úlairi, the Enemy's most terrible servants; darkness went with them, and they cried with the voices of death.”
— The Silmarillion, "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age"
Now... you’re probably thinking. How can a Nazgûl be “born” if they were already born as men? My answer to you is to think of doing something less connected to the mythology. A mythical creature in some kind of tangible environment, like you would see in a natural history museum. Of course, that environment could be anything as long as it makes some kind of sense. Imagine for a second that the Nazgûl can be born and your job is to illustrate that.
What not to do: Don’t draw a Mordor landscape! I think this offers a very exciting theme with an iconic creature in mind. I would suggest to try to come up with something that would actually work in the real world and require you to do some wildlife research. It can vary from terrifying dark cliffs to beautiful mountains. Imagine a Nazgûl feeding it's chicks on a bright sunny day. Could be interesting.
“The Nazgûl came again . . . like vultures that expect their fill of doomed men's flesh. Out of sight and shot they flew, and yet were ever present, and their deadly voices rent the air. More unbearable they became, not less, at each new cry. At length even the stout-hearted would fling themselves to the ground as the hidden menace passed over them, or they would stand, letting their weapons fall from nerveless hands while into their minds a blackness came, and they thought no more of war, but only of hiding and of crawling, and of death.”
— The Return of The King
Winners via tie: noche & Pixeltuner
I think the idea behind this is the way a natural nest would have looked like, before the creatures were captured and used in war. Kind of.
I had the idea where they kinda rise from the water and take the swords... cause they need to have gotten the swords somewhere...

E.O.W Round #179: Grand Theft Auto Tribute
E.O.W Round #179: Grand Theft Auto Tribute VOTING POLL
For those unfamiliar,
Taken from Wikipedia:
"Grand Theft Auto (commonly abbreviated GTA) is a multi-award-winning video game series by Dave Jones, then later by brothers Dan Houser and Sam Houser, and game designer Zachary Clarke. It is primarily developed by British developer Rockstar North (formerly DMA Design) and published by Rockstar Games. The name of the series is derived from grand theft auto, a term referring to motor vehicle theft.
The series is set in fictional locales heavily modelled on American cities, while an expansion for the original was based in London. Gameplay focuses on an open world where the player can choose missions to progress an overall story, as well as engaging in side activities, all consisting of action, adventure, driving, occasional role-playing, stealth, and racing elements. The subject of the games is usually a comedic satire of American culture, but the series has gained controversy for its adult nature and violent themes. The series focuses around many different protagonists who attempt to rise through the ranks of the criminal underworld, although their motives for doing so vary in each game. The antagonists are commonly characters who have betrayed the protagonist or his organisation, or characters who have the most impact impeding the protagonist's progress."

E.O.W Round #181: Centaur Rendezvous Point
E.O.W Round #181: Centaur Rendezvous Point VOTING POLL
In Greek mythology, the centaurs are a race of mythical creatures that are half human and half horse. They are depicted as the head and torso of a man with his waist joined to the horse's withers, where the horse's neck would be. The word 'rendezvous' means a meeting place, an assembly point, a place where centaurs come together. Whether it's for war, for hunting or for leisure is up to your interpretation!
Winners via tie: Luis Gama & albino-Z
Runner-ups via tie: unruhe & merl1n
I wanted to make the scene as if it could happen in real world. The terrain is pretty much typical for Greece. Composition should support the feeling of meeting place with all the shapes and lines leading to the center, where centaurs gather.

E.O.W Round #185: At the Banks of the Glowing River VOTING POLL
There is something enchanting about this place, whether it's source of illumination is magical, spiritual, technologically produced - or perhaps it is a creation of nature itself.
"Every year at spring the people come to the river, each lighting a lantern in prayer. They say the first lantern taken by the water spirit is the first prayer to be answered, but that's silly... everyone knows they're answered all at once."

E.O.W Round #186: Earth's Womb
E.O.W Round #186: Earth's Womb VOTING
This is an open topic.
Keeping that in mind, you can ponder some scenarios of your own on the possibility of the Earth possessing a 'womb' of sorts, such as...
- What if planets could recreate or reproduce? What has been generated from this specific space on our planet?
- Is there a place on Earth where the landscape resembles the womb of a female entity or contains the very aura of creation?
- Is this something of celestial origin? A place of ash and dust and swirling matter. A place where magical things froth about in a scientific soup.
- A moment from Earth's "childhood" or mature development stage, the coming out.
- Literally a womb for a species of creatures.
Whatever your approach is, my guidelines are that be it abstract, traditional or supernatural, your environment should encompass the topic in an aesthetic, understandable way. I think that's of enough of a brief for me this week.

This week we are having a weekly crossover with Industrial Design of the Week! Both weeklies have the same topic, however the approach will be different. Because of this, taking a visit to both threads will be sure to provide inspiration.
The basic concept: There is a materials refinery which is orbiting a planet as it sources its material. What planet and what material being processed is completely open.
Inside or outside view is up to you.

"You were only lost because you had no heading." Said the Commodore of the Lost Fleet. "That's our purpose son, to give the lost a heading..."
With that he set us ashore in the waning light of day, Ugolino watched from his metal carapace as they floated away into the misty sunset. I looked into the blackness of light and shadow looming above us. This might be salvation for Ugolino. At last I saw the course we must take; into that place of stone, glass, and steel.

E.O.W Round #195: Adar Llwch Gwin Bathhouse
E.O.W Round #195: Adar Llwch Gwin Bathhouse VOTING
According to Welsh tradition, the Adar Llwch Gwin were giant birds, similar in kind to the griffin, which were given to a warrior named Drudwas ap Tryffin by his fairy wife. The name derives from the Welsh words llwch ("dust") and gwin ("wine"). These birds were said to understand human speech and to obey whatever command was given to them by their master. However, on one occasion, when Drudwas was about to do battle with the hero Arthur he commanded them to kill the first man to enter the battle. Arthur himself was delayed and the birds immediately turned on Drudwas and tore him to pieces. Later, in medieval Welsh poetry, the phrase Adar Llwch Gwin came to describe all kinds of raptors including hawks, falcons, and, on occasion, brave men.

E.O.W Round #196: Train Station (any genre) VOTING
This week's environment topic is to create a train station in any genre. It has to include the train and if it is a passenger train, a system to unload passengers. If it is a freight train then it should include a system to unload its freight. Use your imagination but remember to focus on the machinery and function of the train station!
Train Station, Unknown City, Year 2036. Still travelling on the ground using gravity on magnetic field cushion with speeds reaching 500 km/h

CROSSOVER: IDW #218 / EOW #198 - Merfolk Colony
CROSSOVER: IDW #218 / EOW #198 - Merfolk Colony VOTING
We have a special crossover and partner edition of Industrial Design of the Week and EOW this week. There are a few things that are a bit different this time round- this will be a 2 person partner round. Each team must submit to both IDW and EOW.
Merfolk Colony: As an advanced underwater culture, they have created many intriguing items to help them in their day to day lives, and to help them understand our world. Your task is to show 2 of any of the following technologies:
A) Earthnet Research Station- a mer and human joint floating research vessel/platform/station/pod. This was created to help bridge the gap of knowledge between the terrestrial world and the aquatic, as well as taking advantage that multiple viewpoints can give to other fields of research.
B) Farm Drone- Crops such as seaweeds and fish are important underwater crops. Huge areas of kelp forests and spawning corrals exist around the world and are tended by agricultural drones.
C) Underwater Ambulance- A fast and stable carrier which transports the injured to a medical care facility.
D) Tide Power Generator- The never ending movement of water as caused by the Moon is a completely renewable and environmentally safe power safe that is accessible everywhere. These generators come in a variety of sizes for different purposes.
E) Land Prosthesis- A vehicle for the Mer body that allows brief visits on land primarily in order to deal with terrestrial folk. These are key for trade and diplomatic visits, though that by no means is the limit of their use.
Please note again that this is a 2 person partner round! Each team must submit to both IDW and EOW. Teams submitting to only one or the other will not be taken to poll. As such, the names of both partners must be on the final entries even if only one partner worked on that specific image.

E.O.W Round #199: In the Dead of Winter
E.O.W Round #199: In the Dead of Winter VOTING
This is an open topic. Think about the atmosphere of your piece and how cold it should look being that it takes place in the most severely freezing part of winter, wherever it is. This is also all up to interpretation too because the phrase "dead of winter" can be many things, not just literal.
Aurora just started its beautiful display on the December sky but Sir Galahad did not have time to cast his eyes on it, he had to be focused...movement in his armor was very difficult that freezing, whisper quiet night. The dead was awaiting his victim and there was nothing anyone could do to prevent it. Soon the silence will be broken...
Going underground to keep warm for the winter.

E.O.W. Round #201: Birthplace of a God Trilogy
E.O.W. Round #201: Birthplace of a God Trilogy VOTING
In the realm of concept art, not everyone's going to be a game designer, but if you look at it another way, film, television and video games and even traditional art all have the same principles attached to building an environment - you still have to plan out what it looks like and convince the viewer that it‘s a piece of an authentic world. Borrowing Corrick's words from idea suggestions thread awhile back, he said “Maybe every fifth or sixth round could be one of those hyper-detailed challenges where we have two or three objectives over a period of a couple of weeks, not just "paint a pretty picture" every time.”
Keeping with that idea, I bring to you this week’s theme, suggested by Moai and inspired by Corrick.
Topic: Birthplace of a God
2 weeks, 3 sub-challenges
Interior: The Caverns of Creation.
Exterior: The New World
Other: The Whirling Void
As seen above, this week will be split into a trilogy - 3 separate sub-challenges: interior, exterior and other. It’s your choice if you want to focus on storytelling, design “levels” of a game or simply illustrate three images that encompass the theme, or a combination of all three for that matter. Don’t be afraid to take risks as this is a learning experience!

EOW Round #206: STREET FIGHTER!!! (choose scene from their childhood) VOTING POLL
For this week's EOW, your task is to give a snapshot view of the childhood of any Street Fighter character of your choice.
Show us what type of place these fighters grew up in before they all became grown up fighting machines. Where did Zangief go to school, or was he brawling at bars at local markets even at a young age? Show us the home of Akuma, M. Bison at a carnival trying to look alpha. Show us where little Chun-Li travelled to for spiritual release. Give a glimpse of these warrior's environments in their youth... (you don't necessarily have to show the actual child character)
"I went with honda for this eow.
Since E.honda begun his training since a young age, i chose to portray him in a kind of dojo"
"I imagined young Dhalsim growing up in an Indian village centered around spirituality and temple for worship. He most likely spent long days being mentored by his father outside the town, under a large tree for shade. There Dhalsim would learn about Yoga and life but given the rich wildlife and terrain, he would no doubt be distracted from time to time by a few Elephants with their riders returning to the village."

EOW Round #208: The Arrival of An Alien Rockstar
EOW Round #208: The Arrival of An Alien Rockstar VOTING POLL
This week's theme is to design a scene depicting the arrival of an alien rockstar (on whatever planet you so choose) Is it a welcoming celebration for a Rolling Stone of a terrestrial society of the future? Has the rock star been exiled and is far from welcome, sneaking past Atmospheric Patrol in order to garner a performance for the citizens? Think about the purpose of the visit. In your image, try to tell a story. Keep in mind that if you don't want to get into any character designing for this round, a very distant bird's eye view of the scene might work in your favor so you wouldn't need to illustrate the rock star.
