    Either your anatomy is really off, or you just have a thing about dwarves. Their not bad, and it looks like you have an interest in the studies of proper drawing, but these figures are way off. Try puting them in a more interactive landscape, while paying attention to the perspective of where we are looking from to where they are standing in comparison to something larger/smaller than them. remember, you need to establish a suitable horizen to measure the comparisons properly, such as a fellow standing next to a tree, or a building on the street corner. Give us a focus point, so that we know where to look and can thus move off from that in studying the bigger picture.

    yea you're not the first person that said my characters look like dwarves. I'm going to try like hell to get some anatomy books. I think the biggest problem with them are my heads are too big and limbs are too short. Any ideas?

    well, like you said, your going to try to get some anatomy books. You may also want to try photo rendering. take some photographs of people, or study yourself in the mirror, and try to put it down. the more you do, the more you can learn. Anatomy books, though, can help greately.

    Hey there
    This is looking good, keep up the digital and traditional stuff.
    I think the 'dwarf' problem is in the lower part of the legs, you tend to make the leg from knee to toe way too short.
    Things you can (and should) do is looking up pictures of people standing (with their body fully visible) and use them as reference. Be hard on yourself, but not too hard. You need to get the proportions right, so don't force yourself to make the face great, just try to get everything balanced. If you want you don't need to draw a face at all, as long as the head is the right size.
    When you get those things right (this is rather hard, as I'm trying this myself at the moment) you will have a lot less trouble creating characters I think.
    Oh and when it comes to faces; try not to make the eyes stand apart too much, the rest looks good!

    Also keep practicing colouring, and maybe experiment with what colours suit which mood.

    Hi Xpose - I saw your amiable post in the naga thread and thought I'd have a look at your stuff

    Just picking some out here:

    - I like your Deathworm - reminds me of my Brutina The combination of annelid, pachyderm and humanoid works really well and I haven't seen it anywhere else.

    - The skull is very reminiscent of those found in a lot of Games Workshop art and is quite well rendered.

    - Your humans have huge heads. This is detrimental to the otherwise gritty styles because it makes them look very caricaturish. Head size seems to vary a lot from image to image as well. I like your clothing and armour designs, especially the overlapping plates on the boots of sketchedgunman.

    - Your most recent colourings are nice, though the use of heavy multiply or burn is quite evident in places like the shadows under the plates on the dragon-creature's neck. You should consider avoiding shading that brutally as it overloads the subtle texture you've invested into the neck. You can create some new texture out of it by grabbing a hard smudge brush, size 7 or so, x and y scatter 30-40%, x10 applications. This makes an ultra useful blenderiser brush that retains a hard edge and can be used to create highly controlled gradients across surfaces whilst investing some of their own texture. It's a really neat meta-tool of sorts that you could use to replace that terribly dark void with tendons or whatever.

    Anyhow, some good stuff happening here.

    Hey Xpose, thanks for commenting on my sketchbook man! I really like the digital work you're doing here. It's something I have barely dabbled in yet although that's about to change. I agree with a lot of the earlier comments. Your skill in rendering is ahead of your proportional judgment. I've been digging into anatomy studies almost exclusively this summer. Here's some of the resources that I have really gotten alot of mileage out of:

    Betty Edwards "The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"

    That book is great for reminding yourself that your brain will try to redefine what your eyes are really telling you.

    Tony Ryder's "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing"

    This book helped revolutionize the way I approach drawing the figure. It outlines a methodology for figure drawing.

    From what I have been able to determine, there are three helpful approaches to measuring for proportion: comparative, relational and sight-size. Do a search on any of those and you will find a wealth of info. I am also studying from the "Structure of Man" DVDs by Riven Phoenix and Loomis (they use comparative measuring) you can find some downloadable resources here: look another link!.

    Finally, Dude I am a student not an expert. If you can share any resources, advice or discoveries with me PLEASE do so. I'm just searchin' for answers...hope some of that helps you.

    Holy crap! I haven't posted in this thread forever.... I've been neglecting my artwork this year. Been working on 'life' more than art I guess. I've done a bunch just haven't posted them or anything. Thanks Anuran! I'll definitely check out those links. I've gotten better than I used to be though I'm still not at the point where I want to be.

    Anyways here's some more recent artwork









    It seems I've been doing more portraits lately than anything. Not on purpose. I'll try to remedy that

    What I really like is how the color background you use for your portraits aren't white, but a different colour like blue. 8D Pretty awesome.

    Your work is very lovely, and I love your digital painting skills. Really, the only thing that's glaring out at me from most of your pictures is the limb size. The arms and legs are perhaps a tad too short. Lengthen them a bit, an I daresay you'll be golden. Try looking at studies of skeletons for the arm lengths- that's the only way I can even start to get them right, to be honest.
