    MIKECORRIERO:
concept: They control small swamps and ponds, particularly fond of lilly pad filled murky waters where they can easily hide. The swamp beast is capable of changing colors and usually will turn a bright violet and orange when warning off larger predators because it contains in it's bloodstream a deadly neurotoxin. They contain only two tentacles although extremely long these are used for constricting and strangling its victims, dragging them under water until they drown and take thier last breathe. The swamp beast then swallows the victim whole through a stretchy rubberlike mouth filled with very tiny serrated teeth.

concept: Muzh'albazar, The Swamp Beast - In da old legends, the beast from da swamps swim in da dark waters of da swamps in seek of da prey. It's is big, bigger than adult man, over seven foots. It have two hand and four legs, and it is great swimmer, and runner too, so ya chance to run away is about that small... But don't ya panic. Maybe it's big, but it's have small mouth, so it's hunt for small prey, like rats, birds or other fleshy stuff. It's hood is stinky like the swamp it live in. It's have eleven green eyes, but it's don't have good sight... it's fell disturbance in the water, like spiders feel movement on the web... Be careful when ya approach to this beast it's maybe don't eat ya, but it can easly broke your spine. - Mahera Maxima, Book of Monsters.

    goran:
concept: Deep in the swamps, which surrounds the National Park Garbage Land, lives this nocturnal predator called by the natives, ď chiro chiroĒ. His diet consists of tourists and reckless National Park Rangers. During the wintertime, when the park is closed, he can be seen desperatley licking fresh roadkill on the main highway, which connects to the Garbage Land capital. Among the natives of this hostile enivonment, the chiro chiro tail is a much sought after delicacy. Because of the increase in hunting, this species which once roamed free among the swamps, is now at the brink of extinction. For the past few years, the hunting of the chiro chiro has become highly prohibited by the laws imposed by the Garbage Land National Park authorities. There is a myth told among the natives that the chiro chiro is well aware of these laws and because of this has been acting up and having his revenge on culinary enthusiats who are responsible for the near extinction of his species. This is one of the rare photographs of this species in its natural habitat.

concept: 'Glorious serpent', 'phosphorescent prince' & 'Foremost of the fungus' are just a few titles be-given to the Dormetrius Radii by the locals that inhabit the swamplands of Plot'u IV. The first human visitors simple called it a swampbeast when they encountered one snoring in the sun. Little did they know that this swamp beast would be their doom and downfall the coming night. Upon inspecting a suspicious moving light on a routine night patrol, four members of the alpha squad were dragged down in the abyssal bog by the night active Dormetrius.
It was later discovered that the Dormetrius has a marking on it's dorsal fin which is almost impossible to distinguish during daytime. At night however, this marking of death radiates an eery yellow light luring all prey to a shallow bog-filled trench. The Dormetrius makes a surprise launch from it's hiding place and drags it's prey into the bog where it devours it.

The warden is fucking crazy, I kept sending reports about the mutagenous effect of the cinders of previous experiments under controlled conditions.
He insisted that the cinders were to be deposited along with rocks in the swamps on the east wing to fill them up. Not only he didn't listen to me but he called me "uncircumcized moron" in front of the interns.
So i sent two teams to do the deed and almost immediately everything went crazy. The gamma Swap oxes mutated into sluglike creatures, it was pathetic to watch but at least they died after a few days. The scary ones were the tiny fish that live in the low oxigen water.
I know a lot about genetics but I don't know how these ashes work anymore. I felt like a layman trying to understand what was going on when the fish started floating in the air and developing some sperm filled sacks. We couldn't catch a single one of them, mainly because we went there prepared for the cinders but not for the noise those things made.
The worst part is that even though the sperm is basically dead, it has a mild cinder-like effect and it mutates plants and animals on contact.
We didn't catch them and the warden fired and exiled me and 3 of our team.
We leave at 16:30 today and i am just e-mailing you to tell you what happened and to inform you (off the record) that you are going to take my place.
He's insane, so delete this message along with the one i sent yesterday before the guys at the server inform him.

concept: Residing only in deep, undisturbed swamps, these gentle giants have been known to live their entire lives without taking a single step out of the habitat that they were born in. Some speculate that they simply grew out of the swamp, although the actual origins of these creatures is unknown. They seem to live in a symbiotic relationship with their swamp and are often mistaken for part of the landscape by travellers that don't think to glance over their heads while passing by one. However, these giant beasts are as harmless as the trees themselves.

concept: Little is known of this carnivorous creature, which currently is named a mossjaw. Experts agree that the closest related species is a mimic, but this swamp beast has a few unique characteristics. The most apparent is the size, ranging from the size of a dog, up to a two story structure. This abomination also cannot change it's shape, but instead just resembles and attaches the foliage and compost it was created from. Named for its massive jaws with two rows of razor sharp teeth, there are a number of secondary mouths, which vary with size. With no visible eyes, it is speculated that this creature senses vibrations from the murky water it lives in, as well as an great sense of smell to capture anything lurking too close.

concept: Specimen: Anamortilinas Tramyridus (A.K.A. Swarm Worm)
First appearance: January 7th, 2368 on Planet X-39-32
Number of known place: Approximatively 78 planets
Army force first came in contact with this race some years ago, in search of a new non-hostile planet in solar system Hylnd-T7. When expecting the swamps that cover near 4/5 of the first visited planet, a specimen the size of a 3 level building attacked them, killing most of the platoon before hiding itself in earth to be no more found again.
This is an extremely urgent alert, these sentient plant are the dominant life form of multiple solar systems in which there are too many potable planets to pass.
Be aware, the cunning of these plants seems to be higher than the ones of humans. That's what they've shown fourteen days ago when a gigantic specimen swallowed a whole planes-carrier in the middle of an ocean on X-39-61, followed by the whole squad of ships. Torpedos were useless against it.
Be sure to memorize how the creature look. It is the only accurate picture known to date. Study it and shot in the mouth, the only known weakness known. Destroying the eyes only makes it more aggressive, do not shot them.
Old ruins have been found on multiples planets around the twin suns. Which makes us believe that an intelligent race have already lived on these planets and has been eradicated by the plants. Some of the ruins are very high buildings and towers. It is recommended that you take place in them. Traveling on ground is very dangerous, since they can feel vibration and know their exact location from a very long distance.
    That is all is known.
    Good luck on your mission.

    bdfoster:
concept: While many creatures have managed to quickly adapt to settlement on the various civilized worlds, the rapid evolution of the swamp beasts of Victory VII is of particular interest. It is assumed that this creature was once exclusively aquatic in nature, as indicated by its flat tail and powerful musculature. The heavy brow ridge and residual optic nerve suggest that the creature may have at some point in time had eyes, but those have been abandoned in its rapid evolutionary development. Instead, the predator senses it's prey through elaborate scent glands in the front villae. These tentacles are also highly sensitive to touch, and often the creature can locate it's prey though the vibrations in it's passing. However, the most interesting evolution of this creature is the fur like growth that appears on it's back. This mutation has actually been observed as it has only occurred within the last 17 years since colonization. With the environmental mapping of Victory VII to correspond more closely with the habitable climate of Earth, the marshy areas have begun to develop "grass-like" vegetation, of which the swamp beast's fur closely resembles. This mutational camouflage has made the creature even more deadly, allowing it to lie low in the marsh lands undetected before using it's powerful legs to leap upon and devour it's prey. Due to the relative newness of settlement on Victory VII, we will continue to monitor the delicate ecosystem for other rapid evolutionary mutations, as demonstrated by this fascinating creature.

These large creatures are insectivores. They fly above and across the swamp water, just out of the reach of bigger predators. With their multiple wing pairs they can manouver quickly through the air, despite their size. They can also hover suspended in mid air like a hummingbird, just above the water to drink through their circular needle-like facial appendage. The crests on their back and head are mating devices, used to call the attention of the opposite sex. Their main diet consists of small flying insects, which they catch with a muscular tongue-like organ that shoots out from a hole in their heads right below the middle of the eyes, which is sticky in the end, and can retrieve back just as quickly as they shoot.

concept: The existence of this creature has yet to be confirmed by the scientific community but the local swampfolk aren't worried about such technicalities. They know to avoid stepping over small water holes. Likened to a cross between an Arrowana and a Giant Salamader, this sedentary creature lies in wait with only its nostrils above the murky water waiting for it's prey. With suprising agility it lunges upward, mouth agape, and grabs it's victim with an unbreakable grip. "Gaters, naw we ain't worried bout 'em, we got 'em as pets. It's them other ones ya gotta look out fer, they's crafty and mean. They don't got much teeth like a gater but I ain't never heard of no-one gettin 'em to let go. concept: Jack-of-the-Swamp
This rare creature is gestated in the moss growing from the decomposition of dead people and animals in the bogs of southern england. Although it has a very menacing appearence, it is entirely composed of lychen and fitoplancton, and poses no threat to humans. Its body is so fragile that even the smallest distress can break it apart, like a motorboat passing overhead. The diet of the creature consists of fish eggs and petals of swamp flowers fallen on the water. During world wars I and II its population experienced an increase due to the large number of soldier's bodies in the water, but in the subsequent years polution and drainage of their habitats reduced its number to a few individuals. The last sight of the Jack-of-the-swamp was in 1973.

concept: Our camera crews have spent an exhausting 3 years waiting for this moment. You are witnessing, for the first time ever recorded, the emergence of the great "Swamp Beast" of Quagmyre IV.
Once merely a local legend, like the Yeti of Earth or the Nahuutmanphant of New Neptune, the Swamp Beast has long been attributed to the hallucinatory visions of colonists who have inhaled too much swamp gas without the aid of a rebreather. Today, however, we bring you proof.
Labeled a "beast" due to its size, this creature is actually very docile and independent. It moves so slowly, in fact, that the local plant life is able to grow and thrive on its back, providing a natural camouflage. The majority of its life is spent face down in the cool mud, consuming small animals and insects through its filter-like snout. It is widely believed among experts that the Swamp Beast enjoys the feeling of wildlife & patrol squads unknowingly walking across its back- a sort of crude massage.
We're now going to take a moment of silence to observe this historic moment.
This has been Geraldo RiveraTronô, reporting live from Quagmyre IV.

Searching for the swamp beast still in progress. At this moment we haven't found any form of life that could be considered as our wanted creature. If it were not for that we found animals remains, I would stop the searching right now. BTW we have found a good place for a camp... a lot of soft sand... almost like a beach on the Jorath planet. Finally something different from stinky mud, water and those damn mosquitoes. Oddly enough, but the ground

To be more precise, a creatures they thought were a sand. This small organisms are 0,5 millimeter large. My first experiments results prove that they stay inactive while waiting for a victim. Most likely ours were just a unexpected supper. Eyesore has eaten everyone to the bones... I supose I've found what they were looking for... a monster from the swamp. But in place of big teeth and huge size it is small as a grain of sand... ok, I have to go back to work... details later...

Swamp dragon is known to be solitude and harmless creature, though when the mating season begins in early april, this creature suddenly turns very agressive. Unlike other reptiles, the females will hunt for a partner by flashing its bright orange neck. Due to their agressive behaviour during mating seasons female swamp dragons have been reported to have killed humans and large anacondas. These creatures usually live to about 40 years and can grow upto 10 metres.

Who doesnít love the lilí mudskippers that live in the outer edges of marsh where the ocean meets deep spooky swamplands. Most people would never imagine these cute little creatures are merely the tadpole stage of the ferocious Swampbeast.
Only a few hearty explorers have made it deep enough into the tangled, smoggy forests of the swamplands. Fewer still have escaped the beastís vengeful hunger.
The Swampbeast hates direct sunlight, so it waits until the highest tides of the year to lay eggs that are carried out to sea by receding waters. Throughout the mudskipper phase it is at the bottom of the food chain and hunted by every animal in the swamp ecosystem. The handful of mudskippers that survive to maturity grow into a creature whoís size is matched by it hatred of all living things. It will eat anything that fits in its wide toothy mouth, sometimes stuffing extra prey into its expanding throat pouch. The only thing keeping the Swampbeast from wiping out all life in the swamp is an intolerance of sunlight which keeps them in the darkest, fog shrouded areas, and a need to sleep during the night hours.

I'm not getting a image for penguinbox or res.
Is anyone else getting that or is it just my computer?

I'm not so good with the advice...Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

    I voted for JakkaS, because:

-the image is amazing, I love presentation.
-the creature concept and design are very original and works really well.
-the concept story is freaking scary, great job!

The only crit is that perhaps I would have liked to see some more blue-ish hues for the shadows, especially in the enviornment, but thats really just a personal prefference I guess.

Others that I really liked and were runners up:
MIKECORRIERO, silentkitty, nightfend, VegasMike, redehlert, romance, and RES.

Good job to everyone who participated, hope to see you all in round #29

It's a very hard choice but I'm voting for gorillagrin
I like the passive beast interpretation, the execution and the colours

gorillagrin for me, I really like the drama-queen gesture. Bumskee and jakkas, very cool work, also as well as Scumgrinder.

Oh @#$! it's been a long day. ;( I accidentally voted for myself, can I change it to scumgrinder please? D :

Anyway, I was GOING to say I liked that one because of the lighting, I'm a sucker for that type of thing. ; ) I also love rasdasas, though.

My vote goes to Jakkas for pro presentation (clearly showing the creature) and stretching the concept. Special nods to Gorillagrin and Nightfend for having fun with the illustrations. I am looking forward to seeing everyone's entries in the next round.

    Thumbs up

I almost voted for Jakkas's concept as it's really well done, but it seemd very similar to his Massive Black creature, so in the end I voted for Romance's creature because it looks like a realistic and feasible creature you would see in a swamp, and the illustration rendering is spot on. Really nice work Romance.

It's Gorillagrin that got my vote this week. Great story and excellent posture/gesture of the beast. Really got a good feel for this one.
Other serious nods to Romance, Jakka, Bumskee, Scumgrinder, Silentkitty, nightfend and VegasMike (who was my number 2 choice - a tough call!).

    Cheers!

man, so many entries I really really like this round. The 3 that I feel truely stand out amongst the others are:
    Xgabo - Romance - Bumskee
    A few comments:
Scumgrinder, I feel like I've seen the same creature one time to many now. Almost all of your entries are either: bulbous with tentacles, tails and with lobe-like appendages or white and shiny. I'd like to see you try and go into a different approach for a future cow.
JakkaS, cool beasty but indeed quite similar to your massive black beast.
BDfoster, I really like the design of your creature but I would have liked a slightly more rendered background.
Vegasmike, great rendering, wish I could have done that with my creature. It's the 'lion of the swamp' and makes 'prey of everything in the swamp' but male lions don't actually do the hunting. That's what the females do :p ... sorry :p

Hi all ive reposted mine and penguinbox till Fozzy fixes the post above. so here They are

edit by Fozzybar: images are fixed...waiting for the mass-crit!

Once the official post has been fixed ill get rid of these ones. And replace it with a full crit of all of the work (Iíve been promising to do one for two long now).

    Edit
Fozzy has spoken so shall it be

First off Please donít be offended by this its only my opinion so take it or leave it Also I may come across a bit critical about the work but Iím try to be fair and find an area to improve on in everyoneís work as thats why weíre here, so if you donít like what I said just ignore it,.

Ö..Big deep breath and here goesÖ.

    MIKECORRIERO
First off Iíd just like to say Iím a fan of your work, you constantly turn out excellent stuff, I donít think this is your best pic it may be a little understated for my taste but it still is one of my favourites.

    Saise
I think you need to work on your form as itís a bit flat at the moment. Also by using the forum brown around your creature (itís a nice presentation idea) has made your brown creature get a little lost, Brown on brown is a hard one to pull off.

    Goran
Good work Goran nicely rendered. But youíve missed one thing, your glasses are floating of the page; your shadow is set too far, also the lenses have no shadow/effect on the paper. I know this is all about the creatures but now Iíve noticed it I just canít help looking at it.

    possessed:
Nice work posessed so I havenít got much to say, I like the skin texture but it looks too much like a normal dinosaur for me.

    scumgrinder:
Another good pic from you but I feel you need to work on your surfaces as you keep using the same skin on your last few creatures and yes even your furry artic carnivore had it around its face. Youíre really good at this stuff and donít get me wrong I do like it but I would like to see do some different skins.

    silentkitty:
Nice idea silentkitty and a good pic you could improve this by pushing back the rear of the animal and bring forward the head area to get more depth and readability.

    DarkArtist:
The main body of your plant is nice but the rest look like a combination of different carnivorous plants crisscrossing over the image and making it a bit too busy. Try to make your silhouette clear so your image is more readable.

    Cique:
Concentrate on your form, I donít know if you draw much in three dimensions but this would have benefited from a 3 quarter view.

    misledtomisery:
Nice work misledtomisery it may be a tad to dark and would have been nice to have had some rays of light piercing through the swamps canopy to illustrated your light source and give mood.

    Althael:
I didnít get the fact that your creature was a plant until I read your concept so it could benefit from some form of texturing to emphasize its plant origins

    bdfoster:
I like your idea about the fast evolution. Your background work needs improving and your creature looks like its floating but other than that a solid piece of work.

    nightfend:
What can I say another top-notch pic. Its not as finished as some of your other pieces and I think your background could have done with some more trees in the distance. But itís all about the creature and I really like it so you got my vote.

    br0ken_spirit:
Hello there broken spirit the body of your creature could do with some more insect structure as insects normally have a more sectioned body.

    khan:
I think you needed to work on the under water effect as its not really working for me. Your creatureís structure could do with some more definition.

    xgabo:
One of my favorites and you nearly had my vote but I just canít see enough of the creature which is a real shame as I really like the pic and your very clever concept.

    gorillagrin:
For some reason every time I see this pic I think Dr Seuss . An area you could consider improving on is the fur, thereís some nice examples of fur in the artic carnivore cow

    JakkaS:
Great concept Jakkas and a solid pic, it didnít say swamp beast to me but its still a cool concept/nice creature from you.

    bumskee:
Nice work Bumskee, it isnít popping for me but a solid concept nether the less.

    penguinbox:
You have some nice rendering on this pic but I'm having a problem seeing enough of your creature to make a real judgment. You have to be careful that the background doesnít dominate your creature too much.

    Digisaur:
Nice work digisaur one of my favorites, I particularly like the idea
of the evolved mudskipper but I think you should have pushed the envelope a bit on the final creature design as its looks a bit too much like a normal reptile design.

    ViolX:
My main point with this pic is that you have a green creature on a solid green background, which is a tricky thing to pull off. Also after reading the description I was left unclear if this creature is as small as a blood cell or is it a large creature that acts like a leach on the host body, this could do with some form of illustration in the image.

    VegasMike:
Nice work sir it could have benefited from a more dynamic angle to make it really pop but still top work.

    redehlert:
Another good piece from you, just one comment it seems a bit blurry in places.

    llothcat:
I think your pic could do with a wider variety of marks i.e. hard and soft, at the moment your piece appears to be made with mainly soft marks and could do with some more variation

    romance:
A really nice piece, good work I really like the fact you can see the hippos feet and havenít just cheated by covering with a solid water colour. The main reason why you didnít get my vote is that it looks too much like a normal hippo for me and I would have liked to see something a little bit more interesting. Hats off to you on a great piece.

    Nefarious:
I think your piece suffers from the fact that you have cut the legs off, which makes it look a bit odd also at the moment it seem a little flat so more structural shading/shaping could be needed

    rasdasa:
Found your pic a bit to dark at first so I think it could do with some more variety in tone to highlight the points of interests.

Well thatís them allÖ..except for oneÖ.myself its only fair

    Myself:
The foreground elements need more definition to bring them forward, the creature looks to much like its been stuck into the background, the creatures pose isnít dynamic enough, some messy mark making on the creatures back also the creature lacks solid form basically the image just doesnít pop. So stop slacking and DO BETTER.

Thanks for the positive comments and the votes but I feel like Iíve taken two steps back on this one and after such a hard crit from myself I'm going to go back to the drawing board and work on some basic skills so this will be my last cow for a bit but I hope to return a little happier with my own work soon.

Can't promise anything, especially for the next cow.
Anyway i have only entered 5 chows, you forgot to say: furry and with lots of eyes. But when you look at it , that's a whole lot of adjectives for 5 entries. I think I'll just keep doing what I feel like doing, but thanks for the crits.

Vote count for scumgrinder and silentkitty

If you are wondering why silentkitty has a total of +1 names compared to the vote count it's because he clicked the wrong option when voting...so his vote counts for scumgrinder's entry (that's why scumgrinder has +1 vote counts compared to the voters)!

Voted for JakkaS this round for great rendering, presentation, and an unexpected take on the swamp beast theme.

Many other cool ones. A few that stood out in particular for me were: romance (for a beautiful picture), scumgrinder, Nefarious, RES and redehlert (for interesting creature designs), and xgabo (for making me not want to go swimming at night)
