Man, I didn't want to create a whole new thread for this one simple question, but I guess I'll have to. My question is: what's the purpose of drawing thumbnails? I was looking through some sketchbooks, and while they look quite nifty, I'm just not sure what their purpose is. Warming up?

For me it's a simple quick means to work out a composition in miniature, especially if I haven't already previsualized what I what to make. For storyboards or any sequentials, they can also be used to simplify the image and just get the idea across without getting bogged down in the details or execution. Some artists will take the thumbnails they've done and blow them up to a larger size rather than redrawing them.
