    ROUND #027 VOTING

    Topic: Messenger Of Death

Deadline for the voting: Friday, 11th November 2005

    Posting thread (closed):

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    br0ken_spirit:
    concept: The Reaper's Familiar
While Death is busy with his daily routine of crossing souls over into the afterlife, there are those who are not yet ready to be taken. The Reaper has a pet, a ghastly creature who acts as his Messenger. This Messenger meets those who for a moment face mortal peril but do not know it. He informs them that they are near of dying, but that it is not their turn yet to be taken, and so they must wait. He acomplishes this with his grotesque appearence, which usually is enough to frighten away from the dangerous situation the soul in question has wandered into. Though he looks menacing, he is harmless.

concept: After a complete endoplazmatic breakdown of the parasite retrieved the opinion of This direktorate that the parasite is not of terrestrial origin. The cellular properties are found only in the blood of extensive Martian beer drinkers.

    Shalom!
If everything goes as planned, we will unleash Kochot tomorrow.
During the tests we noticed the mutation of fauna caused by Kochot's toxic cloud:
one, the Basser flies, which are generated by kochot's dermis' mitochondria and the sail moths which mutated into filter feeders to catch the large numbers of Basser flies. They grow as big as a horse and since they fly outside of Kochot's toxic cloud, they can be seen minutes before Kochot reaches the area.
These messengers of death won't behave aggressively.
Let them be your warning to ready your gas masks and your suits.
    Yasher koach
    great work, all.

    MIKECORRIERO:
concept: The messenger of death is an enormous creature that appears from the clouds once every few hundred years. No one knows where they live or where they come from but when they arrive, they bring with them the death of thousands. The messenger of death releases thousands of hatchlings to feed upon the souls of the living. These hatchlings enter the body and begin to feed until thier translucent skin becomes a hard carapace, then they retreat back to the sky from which they came.

    Hideyoshi:
concept: Here comes your most terrifying nightmare in the form of the "Messenger of Death" with its multilayered rows of razor-sharp teeth and biomechanical inlays (for whatever reasons) ready to spread its lethal "spores of eternal sleep" onto every unaware victim.

    Carnifex:
concept: If you hear a slow, whiny howl in some desert area, you're likely to have stumbled upon a Messenger of Death. He is a scavenger known to travel all the land in search of fallen prey. When he finds it and rests to eat,the wind will blow through the little holes in the spikes on his back, which causes the ghostly howl you'll hear. Some assume these little holes help him cooling the air he breathes in,in those hot desert areas he favours. During travel,he will have them shut so as not to waste energy.

concept: The Malodourian: messenger of death
The Malodourian. Say it with me: Male-odor-e-n. Good job!
This hallitosis hellion hunts rock-burrowing grubs, deep within the cavernous labyrinths of Sillolith. The grubs, drawn to the transient bad breath expelled by the Malodourian, come out of their lairs as if hypnotized, ready to be devoured. This creature's pungent odor is essentially a "messenger of death" which, to the grubs, is always welcome.
A side note: The hungrier and more stressed the Malodourian is, the more foul rotten egg smell the breath is.
Next week, we'll discuss the Malodourian's "morning breath" for mating.

    Zeitwolf:
concept: Seelensammler - the soul collector
The Soul Collector has a ghostly body that can pass through all kind of matter with ease. Its permanent companions are timepieces and dozens of crows or vultures. Its many (partly visible) brains imbedded in its extremity-less body know everything about everybodies lifes and deaths; he eats the souls of the deads and carries them for a while on its tail.

    Teal:
concept: When someone wants to die and his time did'nt come yet, the Messenger of Death appears. It can not kill until it's master allows, but it plays with the deathwilling pearson in the way he will remember for eternity and certainly won't be calling Death again while standing far from the end of the line.

    Partialartist:
concept: A Pony Express mailman and his horse were killed by Indians who he wronged. The Devil merged them and tasked them with bartering with souls in Purgatory. Basically, in enchange for sending one message to someone who is still living, they must agree to move to Hell.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    flatliner:
concept: Death is a powerful entity, but he is not omniscient. In order carry out his duty he requires the help of a great many creatures. None more so than the Nuntiusqes, The Messenger's of Death. This Creature, brought forth from the nether world by his majesty, is capable of moving in and out our space with great ease, in order to watch the mortal souls. When a soul is ready to pass, it returns to its master, taking word that a soul is ripe for collection. Death then takes heed and comes to welcome the soul into the next world.

    panda:
concept: The death messenger - this little parasite crawls into your ear and feeds off of the waves emanating from your brain. However, it is much more dangerous than your average brainleech, for it literally devours the brain in its quest for thoughts. It saves the worst thoughts for last, and your final thoughts will be of death as it devours the remainder of your gray matter.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Brand_X:
concept: Swimming through the ethereal sea like a demonic angler fish a Messenger of Death searches for the unmistakable psychic patterns that surround the death of a sentient creature.
When it detects such an event the MoD extends a ecto-luminescent tentacle into the quasi phased space inhabited by the soul of the recently departed.
If the spirit of the deceased makes the mistake of "going into the light" it is drawn into the ethereal and devoured.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    gorillagrin:
concept: These Messengers are burdened with the duty of collecting the souls of the dying for safe transport to their next destination. They manifest themselves only during the few moments before death, and even then only unto the dying individual. They gently gather the soul with their long, tendril-like appendages and place them inside their body for safekeeping. As the body fills, the gelatinous sac inside expands until it can hold no more - at which point it's time for the Messenger to make its dropoff.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    misledtomisery:
concept: Aptly named the Mesenger of Death, this creature has never left an eye-witness alive. Every single documented description of the beast has been similar, as well as the fortune of the authors. Seeing this creature is a sure sign of death, occurring no more than 2 days after a sighting.

concept: When your time as come, the Messenger of death arrives, he is like your normal Fedex guys... but in less mmmh normal. With all the people dying today, The Other World gotta have good archives, so sign the form to confirm your death. Sign it, cause he will make you sign it if you don't want. When you see that guy, it's already too late.
ps. yeah i know.. they should upgrade to a network database... but there's not enough death programmer you know... so they still use paper for now..in a couple of decade your just gonna e-mail your form.. but oh well.

    concept: Joratt Bible
    Tome 13, Section 7
"...And then The Gods realized how weak people are, how easy the Evil affects people makeing them weak and faithless. So there came the Messengers of Death to the Earth to cure humanity of plague. Those, who never feel fear, who never can be stoped, made to sperate darkness from light..."
    - - - - -
Messenger of Death is a bird-like creature that possess souls of weaked people. Every murderer and psycho is awake of Messenger Of Death's existence. When the death comes, it shows itself to grab a soul of the damned. Puts possessed spirit into "Pond of Lost", where it stays forever. There is no way back to Earth, like another incarnation... Mark below an eye is considered to be the only sign of regret that can be made - sad joke of Gods.

    concept: Falleser
A beast from the underworld, the Falleser's sole purpose is to notify great warriors of good that they have been marked for death by the dark lord. When Falleser reaches its objective a coffin in bright red shines on its chest. This is a symbol that can easily be understood by the victims.

concept: Messenger of death is a small flying creature from the chaos, it is used by the demons to mark the coming death of their prey. This creature weaves trails of thin red silk to guide the demons.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    GreenTopaz:
concept: Simply known as 'the Messengers', these creatures are something of a visible form of prophecy. They shadow people who are soon to die, ready to escort them to the underworld. How closely a Messenger follows indicates how soon you will die, from any number of causes. This, naturally, causes some trouble, as there are some who cause their own death simply because they panic at the sight of one and trip up trying to escape it. Because of this, Messengers make attempts to hide from their quarrys until their time is upon them, but admittedly they don't usually do a very good job of it, being so big (behind trash cans, in the grass, etc.? doesn't work). It's widely debated on whether the odd things can be truly avoided, but normally, people who catch a glimse (or more, 99% of the time) have just learned to get on with what life they have left, depressing as it is.

    rasdasa:
concept: Death is a lazy muther fucker... she is also an insecure muther fucker. She doesn't get off her throne for any reason but to plow through royalty, so she carries her voice through her desciples.
Of course, they only know service of the dark.
They do not hate for their hearts have long been corroded by the tears of their unwilling tasks...*in a whisper* but they can't stop smiling...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    mysterian:
concept: Hathlua té Quirnn, the Messenger of Death who's imminent presence is only preceded by it's gut wrenching stench, silently ascends from the sky to pluck hapless victims. Bone and flesh are consumed quickly in a fury of gnashing teeth and snapping gristle, and the soul's essence is secured in one of two small vials which are tethered to the entity by cords of sinew and cartilage. There are but a few moments of utter bewilderment after consumption of the body in which the beast can manipulate the soul to the vials. The mere touch of a bared soul is instant death to the creature and during this brief moment of transition the soul is weak enough to enable the beast to capture it. The Messenger is forever bound to it's nemesis unless it transports and releases them into the eternal confinement of either Heaven or Hades. The beast cares not which soul goes where,... so just hope that it's closest to your desired destination when it comes for you.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    JeffZNY:
concept: These cowardly scavengers rarely reveal themselves to living eyes, preferring to lurk in the shadows until the lure of death and decay draws them from their burrows. Their appearance is a sign that the stink of death can not be far off.

greentopaz because the mood is very nice, and the red lines make for a nice flow.

on the whole there's an awful lot of "carrying the soul towards heaven/hell" entries. too many into that direction for my taste.

edit:close second place:digisaur. really nice use of colours and great concept.

    Digisaur:
concept: The Bloodmoth spends most of it lifecycle in subterranean tunnels made in high-altitude volcanic mountains. During this time they resemble large beetles with a tough shell and spiky forelimbs for protection and tunneling in the rocky soil. As magma reservoirs builds up inside the mountain, the rise in temperature triggers the mating cycle of the moth. They push their way to the surface and begin inflating their large, blood-red wings. Many of these bright red moths find their way to villages around the base of the volcano. The villagers fear the moth as a sign of the impending volcanic eruption. The size and time of eruption can be determined by the amount of Bloodmoth found in surrounding villages. They know this moth as the “Messenger of Death”.

concept: Deep within Uranus, a monstrous saurian haunts the chasms and cliffs of this steaming world. First discovered (but unreported) by a team of British scientists who heard a loud whistle. Being lightyears away from home and succumbing to feelings of nostalgia they interpreted this whistle as a clear sign of 'Tea Time' and quickly dispatched to where ever the sound came from. Surely the civilised people from Uranus would welcome them to their party. Little did they know that the whistling was actually the mating sound of a Humpasaurus in heat. Naturally the British team was never heard of again, not until their bodies were found atleast. A slightly bruised digicam was found at the site containing footage of a horrible beast later nicknamed (to honor the fallen) 'the messenger of death'.

OK - before voting/posting read this!!!

    1. Please give c&c or a reason why you voted for the image!

    2. Feel free to comment on any or all entries, the artists will appreciate it!

    not accepted entries:

    Saise

not only that the creature itself looks somehow put together with things (cables, fabric), rather than organic shapes...also the sandglass and the documents push it out of the acceptable area...

    close to rejection:

    element412
Actually i would have rejected your piece, because it looks like a ghost/character thingie...but as it's your first entry and we wasted enough blood this round you made it...

    rasdasa
Man, you're moving on the edge again...the fact that your creature has a human body in it doesnt bother me, since centaurs also are definetley creatures in my eyes...the description leans to a character, but your artwork is beautifully painted so i couldnt reject it...but don't be surprised for the next ones when it hits you

I voted for Green Topaz because I felt that his design was exceptionally unique and I love the Barlowe-esque feel to it. I don't have much crit for you on it man, except that you said "here's my lame entry", when it is clearly awesome. Stop that...I hate it when awesome artists insecurely put down their own work. Hell even if you were an awful artist you shouldn't put down you work. Excellent job, man.

Sorry I don't have time for full on crit of everyone this time.....others that were in my top running were: Rasdasa, JaKKas, Mysterian, and gorillagrin.

    Great work to everyone!

Greentopaz is the leader for me - fantastic creation in a little 'Japan Myths' design I love it truly, it's so dark and you can almost smell this 'Creepy atmosphere' around this beast. Secondly for me is Jakkas - It's beatuful Pic, but not much original. Greetingz for all.

Hey Saise, thanks for sticking around the COW despite that your entry wasn't accepted. Good attitude and good luck next week! Saw the critters in your sketchbook, so I'm sure you'll do well.

Not sure who I'm voting for yet. I really didn't like GreenTopaz's at first, but the love fest here has prompted me to take another look at it, and its charm is definitely growing on me. Probably won't get my vote, but a nice fresh entry nontheless. When I first saw Radasa's, I was pretty sure it wasn't going to make the cut to voting..but now that it's in here, I might just have to vote for it! I love the style and energy of it...I'm very curious to see how you work. Jakkas's is also a beautiful painting, though the design is not that imaginative...Likewise, I like Simonl's concept, but the design could've been stretched further. I nearly forgot about Scumgrinder because it seems like he posted that entry ages ago, but it's an inventive concept and top notch rendering as usual. One day soon the COW crown will be his...but maybe not this week. Honorable mention goes to Oregano, who is with us in spirit and damning the man for the rest of us.

I made my vote for Partialartist. I am a horse rider myself and the image of a horse and rider being fused in death like that was just a real flesh crawler. The dead face with the arrows was an extra creepy touch.

My vote went to Bumskee but this wasn't an easy choice. I'll explain more when I return from a seminar this evening. Good job to all!

Yo Fozz, where's ma entry? Was it not accepted or did you just miss it by chance? I know it doesn't really stand a chance amongst these but I thought I'd ask.

Guess I didn't make the cut either. Too human looking?

I voted for GreenTopaz. I really dig the design of his creature and the glowing sigils cut into its hide. The background looks nice too. Very creepy, with kind of a Studio Ghibli feel. Well done.

No worries, darn Imageshack, will use a different host next time. There are a couple of really really nice ones in this round imo. JakkaS, Scumgrinder, misledtomisery (and others) come to mind especially. There are also a few creatures bordering on a character entry with a great illustration but it isn't what COW is for.
I was feeling a little uninspired with my last 2 COWs (not cause of the topic) maybe I'l make something nice out of the swamp beast.

I voted for Goran. I really like the presentation. You didn't need any long fancy explanation, everything you need to know is in the picture. I think you could've tied it into the topic better, but at least it's not another variation on carrying souls to the other side.

    so many hot entries..

it was between gorillagrin: and GreenTopaz: for me in the end. Went for GreenTopaz, because the creature was so damn wacky and the hand just kept popping in my head. nicely excuted and brilliant concept. CAN NOT believe you thought it was LAME!?!??! well done again.

Other entries I enjoyed were rasdasa:, too human though. BlkCelebration: JakkaS: MIKECORRIERO: scumgrinder: Digisaur:!!

    thanks redehlert

I voted for gorillagrin, because of the nice contrast in the picture and the concept.

A lot of very cool entries guys!

For me it was a tossup between scumgrinder and GreenTopaz. GreenTopaz's design gives me the chills and has a lot of personality, but I ended up going with scumgrinder because of the unique take on the "Messenger of Death" concept.

Great stuff all around though. Can't wait to see what the next one churns out.

Nice work all around on a very open topic. I was diggin Green Topaz, JeffZNY, Mike C, but ended up going with scumgrinder. The style is tight, and the colors really pop. And his concepts are always written so as to immerse you into the story, which I dig.

    Short as always...
I voted for scumgrinder - a reason?... I like this concept, he's works fast, but results are always at high level.
My second choice is MIKEC. I like u'r style, Mike.
And the third place....GreenTopaz. Nicely done.

Thx for any comments and votes!

My vote goes to GreenTopaz. A cool looking creature, well render and an intresting concept to boot. In some ways its kind of simple, but that works to its advantage.

Good work from all, well done.

We'll ride the spiral to the end, we may just go where no one's been

    mysterian

    Hi there!

It's MYSTERIAN to me. It has got a mean feeling to me. And I don't wanna get eaten by that beast. It also has nice lighting and composition. It gives me a believable mood of death...

    nicely done.

yes, well... sorry about that, I know how a lot of people don't like it when artists do that, but sometimes I can't help myself, and I was having a cruddy day O__o

Though I thought lots of them were awesome, I went with scumgrinder It's a cool concept and well delivered, I thought. Other favorites are MikeC, rasdasa, mysterian, BlkCelebration, bumskee... very awesome guys ^^
