    Watchout! SCAM ALERT

I was recently contacted by someone that had seen my info on conceptart.org and claimed they were looking for freelancers for what sounded like a good freelancing contract. They seemed legit at first emailing me about quotes and prices and saying they may need 20 to 30 hours a week and calimed that they would pay good money, then i got this email.

    --------------------------------------
Thanks again for replying and hoping to work together with DecisionMak Software Corp!

The work will begin next month.

There is a ONE TIME NON-REFUNDABLE FEE of $50. The cost will cover the training materials and our software (include the one you have already received) sent to you.

Please understand that as much as we would like not to charge this small processing fee, we must protect ourselves from those who are not serious about this work opportunity. We can’t confirm which applicants really want to work for us because all works will be finished through the Internet.

No business can afford to cover administrative cost, wasted time or provide costly materials to everyone who inquires about this position. This small fee assures us that you are serious about working for the job.

    All the best,

    DecisionMak Software Corp

    ------------------------------------------

Watch out for this lot, they are hell bent on convincing you that the work is good, you only have to pay for the training material, training material that is non esential for layout and graphic design work.

PLEASE- if you are new to freelancing or conceptart and you get any of these sort of emails make it known amongst the rest of us, our community cannot afford to have snakes in the grass.

my reply message to them as soon as i got their email was as follows.

    ---------------------------
I can see you think i am a fool , I have been in the freelancing graphic designing buisness for a long time, your scam is so blaintently obvious that is boggels the mind.

Please remove me from your mail service you will not be receiving work from me or anybody that i know.
It was a bad decision to try and scam the people of conceptart.org I only pray you dont convince anybody to send you money.

This is the last email or contact you will receive from me, you are on my BAN and DELETE list.

I really can't believe that this stuff goes on. How screwed up is that?

"Please understand that as much as we would like not to charge this small processing fee, we must protect ourselves from those who are not serious about this work opportunity"

jesus. I don't know if it was these guys, but I also recently got an out-of-the-blue email that sounded pretty similar on the "we're interested in hiring you" thing. I couldn't figure out what their company even did and I needed chinese characters to view their website, so I just deleted it. Now I'm wondering if it was the same guys...

They made me quote on work wich was the screwed up thing.
The entire thing seemed legit until i started getting all the bad signs.

I was bummed out for a second because i was expecting to fill some more hours of freelance.
its ok though a big job came around the corner for me just after i realised this one was a scam. so i wont starve

You should contact the BBB, or tell them that yoou did. This kind of fraud is highly illegal.

I got contacted by the same people. I was so busy at the time I forgot to write them back, now I'm glad I got distracted.

LOL - same thing happened to me. I had a vibe tho, and did tell them that I thought it was a scam. They wrote back saying it wasn't, and I never got back to them... Good thing too.

They were offering $6k a month - first hint it's a scam. Second hint was that they wanted me to send them my contact info and website, after they just said they had seen my site. I mean, WTF?

Anyway. Whatever. Glad it didn't go any further.

I'm in Oreganos group with this one. I got an email from them but as soon as I saw the $6000 a month I let out one big HA!, and straight to the trash it went. The funny thing is they wanted me to do graphic design yet I have no graphic design on my site, go figure.

Is it my imagination or does there seem to be more outrage in the artist community lately over crap like this. If so it's about damn time.

I am so sick and tired of fielding loser offers like "Do this artwork for nothing, mousemonkey!"

Well that was fun. I was just contacted by them again. I basically let them know there credibility stinks and they should probably be aware that artists talk to other artists.

If only there was a way for us to rate our clients, without having it bite us in the but later on. You could look them up and say either they are great to work with or not.

It may be wishfull thinking, but I do get tired of worrying that every new contact I get could just be somebody trying to rip me off.

The only place I know of where that is done is the i-spot's chat boards. They have a "Difficult Client Registry" forum topic where artists can ask other artists about bad experiences with clients.
