Figured I'd get me one of those sketch books.
dont really have time to upload much, so i grabbed these two studies i was doin by my computer.
please excuse the horrendous scanings, my scanner is from '97.

cool, nice use of tone specially on the bullet. My only crit would be to go a bit more into the background seeing as these are still lifes, even if it is just showing where the shadow falls.

here be a self portrait im working on in pencil (4h to EB). s'not done yet.
this next peice is a larger-than-life anatomy study, done in comp.coal
the full piece is probably 7 or so feet tall. quick shot
some older gesture sketches and stuff ive never finished, all on 2x4(?) newsprint, all Ebony pencil.
experimenting with ink on sopping wet paper. interesting effect.

Here. I would say the portrait is probably the strongest piece, because you used more tone than harsh line like your other pieces. I would suggest trying to create the form, ESPECIALLY in the skeleton pieces. I know its tough w/ the inkwash but it gives it a lot more form and helps get rid of that flat feel. And don't forget the stronger the highlight on one of those bones ther stronger the shadow it will cast~*

Looking nice overall. You seem to scribble a lot, so maybe line economy is something you should consider. And you can fill up a page wayy more than that! (save the rainforests and entertain us!)
Like the SP, but it could use some more contrast. I envy your lips, beautiful and pouty.
thanks cookie. ive got a real loose style, hence the quick scribbly lines. Ive been trying to reduce the lines, but whatever. Those super scribbly pictures were 10 second thumbs done of moving people in the mall. thats about as much as i can economize.

some smudges ended up in the top, and the scan is wrinkled. doesnt really do it justice, but you can tell.

hokay. so. i worked my arms off on this project of mine, but ive run into a wall. Im pretty content with myself in the picture, so im going to leave that how it is for now. But i need some background. What i want is some scene of a war-torn wasteland. pr'aps a convoy of refugees/freedom fighters somewhere close by, with a dark city-17/midgar-esque mega-city in the background. Im fucked if i know how im gonig to compose this, so if you want to throw down any pointers that would make my day. Be sure to tear through what ive got with some C+Cs. pleaseeeee.
(same scanner routine. it sucks. im buying a better scanner and printer within the month)
Advocate of Fate: glad to see you started up this "Clever thread name" sketchbook! this one http://img425.imageshack.us/img425/2361/dsc025256ra.jpg is really niiiiice. i know how much it sucks to not have a good scanner.... my scanner at work is pretty good but i'm hesitant to get another one because i don't like the espson cheapo's so much... sigh, what to do. I had a microtek but those dopes won't update their drivers to be osx tiger compatible.
i'm ranting. and this is neither the time nor the place. Advocate of fate is after all packing some heat. lol. One suggestion that i'd make for drawing something as sharp edged and straight as that bullet would be to draw the edges of things with a ruler. it will save you a tremendous amount of time and the machined edge will look so much more appropriate to the subject.
keep up the great work... your portraits are improving... the neck , chin and lips on this one are really nice!
that last one looks dope as hell
only thing i can see in a quick glance wrong with it is that one eyebrow looks a bit higher than the other.. thats all, other than that its siiiiiiiick

catchy sb name! i like your last portrait best.. theres a couple of weird things about it though. first of all that gun is too small-make it BIGGERRR. Also you should broaden the valuerange- the sweater is very dark but some parts in the face are clearly to even/light. Last point is the hair coming in from the right- it looks weird.. id personally change it or completely get rid of it. The form of the hair on the top of his head looks strange too. Overall its still very nice.

guggen- yeah, ive got a microtek as well. It was good back in the day, but that day has long past. I dig the straight edge tip, i do that sometimes. That was just a quckie from a little while back. more of a value study than anything else, really. thanks, ill do my best to continue to 'pack heat' .
mike- way to post you asshole. get a sketchbook goin on here or something, maybe then ill draw you nekkid.
krakel- i see what you mean about the gun, i did that pretty fast and im not really diggin it either. The values are going to continue to get darker as i work it, its about half done at this point. i wanted to get a general feel for the background before i go ahead and finalize the rendering on the whole piece. I feel you get more accurate lighting that way. Im kinda stumped on the right side of the hair too. im just gonna work it hard and see what happens.

Try to keep working out your sketches don't rush it and keep practicing proportions. When you have more feeling of proportions you will see your quick sketches improve too.

home sick. got some quick anatomy studies i did in my delerium last night.
i dug out my prismacolors, god how i missed those. prisma is teh 1337.
the foot says " anyone up for footsy?"
i blame delerium.
seriously though. it was worth a try.
I'll start off in our SSG by just giving you a nice crit on this pic, since I noticed a few things that aren't quite right.
First of all, Not quite sure why you are filling in the space between ribs with black. I know it's a pain having to draw the back ribs, but don't run away from it. That kind of detail pops up in drawings from time to time, and you either embrace it or draw a lacking picture. Get used to slogging away at detail.
But, on to the problems here:
First thing I noticed specifically was that the sternum is the wrong shape. In real life, it looks kinda like a shoehorn with a funky grip and a hangar loop on the wrong side. Important to note is the number of ribs that attach to the sternum directly (without branching) and how many attach through the arcus costalis (the cartilage loop that connects the lower ribs to the sternum. this is a pretty good pic of the ribcage, and here is a nice closeup of the sternum.
Also of note is that the clavicles attach to the top of the Manubrium (top part of the sternum), and pivot in that socket you see at the very ends. Oh, and pay attention to the 1st rib. It has a unique shape.
Other things that are wrong with your skeleton are... well, sorry, but everything. The vertebrae are just very simple versions of the real thing. Cervical vertebrae (there are 7 of them) don't have any ribs, are flatter than the others, and don't have as much space between them as the others either.
The ribs are drawn simply as well, the arms are wrong, but I'll just let some pictures do the talking. Here are some screen grabs I took from an anatomy CD I have.
Also, something important to remember with the shoulder joint is that the humerus fits into it's socket on the scapula, and never touches the ribs. You seem to have it resting on the ribs there, although I can't see it too well.
In addition to this, there was a perspective error that is important to recognize and look for in any future work.
You didn't let the curvature of the chest influence the flow of your lines, and your sternum is subsequently drawn off center.
But, admittedly, the skeleton is freakishly hard to draw, especially if you want to display it in it's full glory with all of the medically relevant nooks and crannies. Grab some good pics of skeletons and draw them as best as you can if you want some good practice. It will help out with general anatomy as well.
Keep posting, and I hope this wasn't too much.
ha, thanks for the asskicking dfacto. Im pretty aware on how tremendously that skeleton sucks. It was done in a class period, so i had to rush it, which is where all these problems come in. The black is there because my teacher put a film cloth in the ribcage cus one of the kids was having a hard time visualizing or something. I wasnt going to try and freehand the back ribs, so i went with the black.
I agree with you, the skeleton is indeed freakishly hard. im taking a break from large-scale skeletal anatomy and focusing more on the build of specific areas now. once i get all those down pat, ill pick up that there skeleton again and see what magic i can work.
Since dfacto was very comprehensive. I'll leave one little word of wisdom: mileage is the name of the game.
My only gripe so far is the line quality, it seems you go over the same line many times without being assertive about it. Try to loosen up and don't bother so much with the result. Line quality makes or breaks any picture.
