    Sargent books, recommendations?

Hi, hope this is in the right place, if not feel free to move it.

I'm looking for a book on Sargent- my local bookshop isn't up to much so I'll have to order one in specially, anyone got any suggestions for a good one?

I'm more concerned with pretty colour pictures than the actual text btw.

    Ta in advance

This one is excellent if you like his watercolors. I give it four stars you can check it out here:
The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent

Also this website is the best one on the web:
    JSS Gallery

This site contains oils, watercolors, and several of his sketchbooks online you could spend hours here looking at pics, some are high resolution.

Thanks for the links, I'll bookmark them and check them out.

Any thoughts on a book with his oil paintings?

    All oil except the first

    - Dover Art Library Series: SARGENT PORTRAIT DRAWINGS. The
cheapest but most helpful book of sargent youll buy IMHO...42 portraits.

    - JOHN SINGER SARGENT by Ratcliff. This seems to be on Everyone's
    shelf...

    - The three catalogue/books by Yale University- EARLY PORTRAITS,
PORTRAITS OF THE 1890's, THE LATER PORTRAITS. That'll cost around $150
altogether. You can buy them separataly
Every portrait has its own description of the person, etc...
...approx 800 pages altogether; each page with at least one reproduction
though many are not that large as this is essentialy a catalogue.

    - Interpreting Sargent. Prettejohn
Small book but well worth it I think - lot of color reprodutions.

Cheers, I'll have a look into those too.

I can't really afford the three Yale books at the minute but I might pick them up as a late christmas present to myself in January.

The Athenaeum has 563 Sargent works and rising (up from 429 when I looked last week), and all of the ones I checked were good big scans. This site is now the best free image archive out there for many artists, including the American Impressionists and early moderns, as well as the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

Direct link to the Sargent pics:

Here's a good sampling of various books available:

The "Portraits of the 1890s" is the one I'd recommend.
