attempt at doing a portrait in charcoal with ref.
this is maybe my 4th time using charcoal? so i'm pretty new to it

second attempt. i'm pretty happy with this. even though it shows no resemblence to the reference and proportions are off.

ugh. my scanner annoys me. anyone know how to make my scans better?
ie. no seeing thru pgs, no darkening on edges..

    Low-tech solutions:

For seeing through pages, get a blank sheet of paper or two to stick behind the one you're scanning. For darkening on edges, get a thick book or something with some weight to set on top of your sketchbook and press it down into the scanner. Not perfect but it can be helpful.

    Oi

It is not often I see print making, was fun for the one chance I had to do it. The faces are truly inspiring. This is a little off standard, but I would like to see what you do that is not directly from references. Very nice work.

It's very weird that your portraits are most excellent. Compared to your other work it is hard to believe that these were done by the same person. I do not mean that the other works are shit but there's a huge difference. It is easy to see that you will be a great artist in the future. You're future progress will be fun to follow.

Hey Jett, this portrait is grade A high quality stuff. You can't tell that it's scanned in pieces. It's almost photorealistic, atleast the nose, because it looks like it's coming out of the paper...

Very nice studies too, especially the hands from Bridgman. Keep it up man!

Wow jett.... Wicked start. I love the graphite portraits and the charcoal work, charcoal is wierd to work with at first but its super fun. Also nice start on the still lifes ..... I need to start some of those lol. Anyway I enjoyed looking through your SB, it would be cool to see some Imaginitive pieces from you. Later and looking forward to seeing more of your work.

This one is really nice. Pears are kind of flat at the base, but the tones are beautiful.

also-tip: the neck is alligned center with the head. Some of those profiles were good, but the neck begins too far back.
