Newbie Dump - Nightwing: Fundamentals, IlloFriday paintings.

I've been roaming for a while, but been a bit intimidated by the amazing work on here, so I haven't posted until now. Can't show much concept art yet, because I haven't been given the okay yet, but here's some stuff:

    Nightwing: Fundamentals-

Photoshop 7 and a wacom tablet.

Read about it and see previous steps on my blog.

    and another:

A piece for Illustration Friday. Read about this baby on me blog! Had to pump it out kinda quick since it's just for fun. I took way too long on that last one. They're really fun to do, though. Helps get the creative juices flowin'. And if I can keep from getting carried away, they make for a great warm-up.

Let me know what you think!

It's good to see some accomplished work! The nightwing comic you have going on is nicely illustrated. The only major thing I can point out are the facial expressions, which are hard to get sometimes. A friend of mine told me to stop creating characters (concept type) from my head, and use references from photos. I have a tendency to make up my own expressions.

Your anatomy, color, perspectives, light and shadows are good.

Great stuff you got, can't wait to see more.

Thank you!! Glad you think so. Yeah, I see what you're saying about referencing vs. pure imagination. I'm kinda torn on that. Guys like Frank Frezetta always did it from imagination. I envy that. I definitely don't want to be owned by the referencing like some artists, but it can definitely help your work. I do on occasion, but yeah, most of the time I don't. I figure eventually, I'll get it down.

But, I will be keeping a closer eye on expressions and I do the occasional piece with reference to pick up a grain or two of new knowledge. It's a growing process.

Thanks for the great feedback!! I appreciate it.

Thanks!! I'm glad you think so and thanks for the feedback!

Oh, and that boy with the Sherlock Holmes thing going on is Ted Noodleman. That's a really funny series done by Jim Keplinger (Shadowhawk, GGS) and Ryan Ottley (Invincible). Started out on the web and took off. The story I did here was for the TPB that just came out.

    Thanks again!

I would like to say first of all that I wish I could do comics like you could. I am not that good. I really like the way your technique on the Nightwing panels. Very clean. I would suggest to work a little more on your composition. You have a lot of camera angles that are at eye level or lower. I would just change it up a little more. I like the panel with Nightwing coming down the side of the building. I would try more stuff like that.

I would also make the panels that you are trying to emphasize on larger. Myself, I would make the panels that have some action or important story elements larger.

You might want to consider combining the last page and the panel before into one panel. It would also make the connection that he is leaving unnoticed by the police.

I think it is really great stuff. I wish is could do comics as well as you.

I really think your other stuff is much stronger in comparision. It is a little looser and has a lot more personality to it.

    Keep it up, good work
