Thread: Scumgrinder's sketchbook
September 30th, 2005 #1
Hi. this is my second post in this forum. i have actually seen quite a few familiar faces from other forums...
Right now i am in the middle of moving out of my apartment and it's a very stressful time but somehow drawing has been calming me down a bit. i have been drawing a lot, mainly practising but i have also been trying to design some characters and color some old sketches....
the first one is a really old sketch that i am trying to color for the second time.
the second is a character design i have been working on since a few days ago but with the moving i hardly get any time to progress.
Anyway, whatever i make i'll be posting it in here so feel free to comment, i'd love to read your opinions

Sweet character designs! The first one is looking great with the lighting primarily on the head and back, and I like the design of his feet a lot. Is the creature's underside going to be mostly shadowed (cause that could look cool)?
You have a neat style; stick around, okay?

Iolarnula. i don't really know where i'm going to take that design yet, i have been trying a few things but it seems to look better with a lot of shadows like you said..
Here are two more designs i made a week ago
and the original lines for the first illustration

this is as far as i'm taking it today, i have to keep packing my stuff. I'll keep working on it and updating as soon as i set up all my stuff at my new place. please tell me what you think.

awsome stuff, I love the feeling of personality your monsters have.

Thanks Snowsfall. I think that's partially accidental.
Moving out of my apartment was a really shitty experience. In the last two days i had to get rid of a lot of documents and old drawings i had been holding on to since years and years ago. Most of my drawings from the university are gone. Also the whole moving out process left me very exhausted. But while i was moving boxes and cleaning up this place i was thinking that i had to at least try to finish the stupid dragon.
So this is how it looks like now. I don't know if it's finished but i certainly don't want to work on it anymore. I am not happy with the background but i should just leave it like that. at least for a while while i try to make the image interesting.

hey man, welcome to the boards. you've got some killer stuff here. i really like your creature designs. you give 'em all great gestures and really strong sillouhuettes. definitely keeping an eye out for more updates =)

Great Stuff!! I like your sense of design, and your rendering execution (mainly your choice of colors). Do you use PS or Painter? Nice cows too.
October 13th, 2005 #26
photoshop 5.5. I have tried with PS CS, painter and open canvas, i just can't get used to them. I wish i could get photoshop cs' brush engine to work with 5.5 but i can't... so sometimes i have to use it. I just avoid it as much as possible.
i also wish i could use painter because the stuff i like the most by other illustrators has been made using painter. I just can't make it work the way i want to and it frustrates me.

This stuff is really gorgeous. You have some very wonderful digital skill. Is this stuff from Painter or Photoshop? That process drawing of the "Sky Eel" or whatever it is is very nice. Hope to see more of your stuff!
