The image is working now and it is frickin amazing imo. Dynamic fluid pose, gorgeous aquatic coloring and nice take on a merman creature.
    Some crits though:
The background doesn't seem quite finished, the brushstrokes are too much present and you could vary the size of th etiny white bubbles.

The light rays are rather strong especially in the upper left corner. If the creature is at surface level I'd like to see some waves breaking or motion in the top.

The yellow dots on it's tail, it doesn't really need them imo.

For those that cannot see the image:

What every one else said. Good work! The picture lacks in composition, tho. There is no sense of direction; the creature is just struck there in the middle. I guess a background would add a lot to it. Right now it sort of looks like a crop froma bigger image.

The creature is awesome. The background is a little too simple and doesn't really show a sense of water around him, and doesn't have depth. The creature looks like it's moving, maybe adds some current around him to make the movement more apparent.

    thanks you guys.

possessed: yeah those weren't intended to be bubbles, more like floating debris lit by the sun but i can see what you mean. yeah i could make it look like you see the underside of the surface if thats what you mean. you dont like the little phosphorescent lights on the tail ok that was my lame attempt to make it cooler. sorry, i bow my head in shame.

maybe i add an abstract composition with strokes? i didnt intend on making more than a character design, but im getting alot of comments saying that i should. thanks alot for the comments and i will make an alternate version.

I like the creature design. A series, with this creature, might be cool.

Nice job. I think the background is becoming important because the figure is relatively small, so we want that empty space to really be doing something. If you cropped in closer the abstract watery texture thing would probably work better.

Is this based on the merfolk description from the M:TG style guide?

I can see what you're saying with this being just a character design, but if you're going to do a background on a character design, have it say something about the character. We can see that it's water, but where exactly in the water does he live? What climate? Maybe thrown in some rocks or coral or at least other fish?

If you turn it just a bit and play up the light and dark in the background, I think you'll geta little more mood:
