Yep, like Icey said, step away from Photoshop and use the damn pencil, the tablet isn't good for line quality! And DRAW FROM LIFE, NO PHOTO REF!

Have to agree with blog and icey, but hey, those 1-2 minutes outlines looked fery promising. But sub-scetches look almost like from an different artist (need to practice on these some more)...which would bring me back to the point of blog and icey.....
    So long...

I'm... i'm having a premonition... it... it says I should start using pencil more!

Thanks guys... looks like there's a general consensus. Duly noted!!!

Icey: I agree with you. Pencil is the key to me drawing better. I like to stick my hand in to a bit of digital now and then though. I'm a 3d modeller by profession, so it was a natural progression! 3D to digital paint to pencil!

Queensoul: Yeah after a while, those avatars are all we see! Well, you are what you drink...

blog: Noted! Although I would have to disagree about tablets and line quality. I've seen some amazing line work done with nothing but a tablet and openCanvas.

blacky: Not sure what you mean in that second sentence, but thanks for the support!

So now I've just got to get into a mantra of PENCIL PENCIL PENCIL....

    Happy New Year! :)

A new year, and lots of sleepy people lying about on couches to draw from! Here's a couple to start with (The first one is pretty damn poor):

    Hey Erilaz,

Happy New Year! It just turned January 1st hear in Chicago. And my wife looks just like one of your sketches on our couch right now. She didn't even make it to midnight. Just me and the kids were up to toast 2006.

Anyway, if you keep going like you have been lately, I can't wait to see what your sketches look like on Jan. 1 2007.

And for a quickie, that first sketch isn't all bad. Keep up the good work.

Please stop by my new Anatomy Sketchbook and critique the hell out of it.

Thanks tfk, glad to see you come by again! I'm trying to get in as much pencil study as possble... i'm trying to work on proportions and keeping my lines simple instead of "petting".

Here's a figure study from Howard Schatz's "Athlete" photography book. Lots of nice dynmaic poses in there! I'm posting up this one now, because I may destroy it when I attempt to shade!

Hmmm... disappointing. I just wanted to show you guys anyway. I think i'm laying in my darks too quickly, because I end up with a streaky mess that's hard to highlight and erase. More patience me thinks...

It takes practice... I'm in the same boat. Take your time and slow down with the charcoal. Anyway keep up the hard work. You have some good stuff here

ludwrathjd: Thanks! I'll keep hammering on. The shading was with a 2B pencil. I was using the flat of the lead.
gmags: Thanks for stopping by and taking a look!

Here's another couple of quick-draws. Most of these are from people moving about alot in a cafe. I need to work on my gesture capturing!

Just for prosperity, here's a few of my life-drawings (not recent):

    30 minutes

This one was when I had no idea about proportions!

    Another 30 minutes:

About an hour... again, proportions were WAY off! This was my first life drawing class ever!

A couple of self-portraits this evening. I'm trying my best to not refrain from posting my crap drawings. I think it helps me see my mistakes and learn from them:

theQuill: Thanks for dropping in! I'm hoping to do as much as possible this year!
azghoul: That means a lot from someone as skilled as you! Thank you. As to Gabrielle, I'm leaving her alone for a while until I've built up my pencil skills. Thanks for the tip though! I'll remember!
shyamshriram: I always welcome encouragement! Hope to see you come by again! (I just took a squiz at your sketchbook. I LOVE those hand studies you've done!)

Here's some doodles at work today:

    Thanks fooxoo!

Yick. Bad day. The quick-draws I can almost forgive myself for, since tram passengers move their hands about all over the place while travelling, but the other one is awful!

If I hadn't mentioned it before, the yellow pages are my quick-draws (ie. I only have a few minutes or seconds to draw people before they move!)

This, I enjoyed. A lot of these came off the way I observed and wanted them. I'm starting to SEE what I'm looking at, not just what I THINK i'm looking at!

Hey, I know your work from CGtalk. Nice to see you here.
Thanks for checking out my book too.
You seem to be on the right path, keep doing those studies and those tram-sketches, that's the way to go.

    2 minute gestures. Fairly ugly!

Hey erilaz, good to see you scribbling, 2min gestures are looking good, though maybe you could focus on a single motion of the figure, overall feel would be very important I think. looking good and keep scribbling!

Hey Erilaz, that last group of hand studies turned out nicely.

One thing I've noticed, for instance on this one -

is that I think you need to think more about the planes of the face, not just the position of the features. I notice this because it's been something I've been trying to work on myself.
I did a little draw-over. If you want to see it, click HERE
If you don't want me to do this anymore, just say "Hey Chris, stay the hell away from my drawings!" and I promise I won't do this anymore.

    Page#2 WooHoo!

bumskee: Thanks! I'm trying to get more loose with my gesturals to get that motion, but I keep clamming up with details. I've got to relax!
crazy3dman: Chris, that's EXACTLY what I need to see! Thanks for the focus. More please. Seriously, i'm learning a lot from my own progression, but I CRAVE critique and tidbits like this. Keep 'em coming! I think you made me look more like me just with your draw-over!

    Here's today's offerings:
