    Artist Info Please

    Hi,

Has anyone heard of an artist called Albert Godwin ?? I have only seen one of his works as a M J Harrison book (Viriconium) cover. The painting is called The Gates of the Inferno. Can't find any information on him and haven't seen any other examples of his art. Anyone seen any of his pieces ?

    Thanks in advance

    Albert Goodwin (1845-1932)

"Goodwin worked for Brown and Hughes in the early 1860s. In 1872, he and Arthur Severn were taken on a tour of Italy by Ruskin, to make drawings of 'threatened' architecture.
Goodwin was mainly a landscape artist but, according to Christopher Wood, he produced a small number of Martin-esque fantasies of which one, the extraordinary 'The gates of the inferno', is reproduced in Wood, 1999 (on p. 250, in colour but quite small, alas). It is in a private collection. It would be nice to think that another of these apocalypses lies undiscovered in the basement of some public gallery; but so far the only work by Goodwin that has been spotted is an indistinct watercolour of the Alps at Norwich Castle".

    From Phryne

The Wood reference is "Victorian Painting" (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1999).

There are a couple of drawings on the Art Renewal site.

Found some Albert Goodwin for you!

If you go to the Sothebys website, hit the "Advanced Searches" button, and do a search for "Albert Goodwin" in the "Sold Lot Archive" you will find about thirty of his works illustrated, mainly landscapes in watercolour or mixed media. (You'll need to register first). The works show he made good use of his contact with Ruskin, and several are really lovely. Here are four:

Thanks, though none of his other stuff looks anything like the 'Viriconium' cover though. The Inferno painting has to be one of my all time favourites, it looks like how a Sparth painting would look like, but in real oils. Dark and evil looking as well.

For those who are interested (not a good pic) :
