some constructive (hopefully) criticism
Your Character designs are VERY stiff and unnatural - start doing 1-2 quick sketch figure drawings to loosen up...you can have the most detailed, anatomically correct drawing ever, but if it has no movement, rhythm, LIFE... forget about it.
The toy design characters are very bland ...there are a million toys out there...what sets yours apart? Kids have a very active imagination and short attention span, anything short of an explosion these days puts them to sleep..so liven up those drawings.
As for the portrait - is that supposed to be the cheekbone? not sure...Dig up a skull from you backyard and start drawing from all angles
Overall, at this point, your sculptures looks better than your drawings
I hope that helps

thats why i put these in the finished section
Well, dude, thanks, i guess for the critique.
Until I actually see some of your work, will I
listen to your comments though. Heres some
gesture drawings, animals, and hopefully some
looser stuff to show you I have already gone
through art school. I already did years of studys,
gestures, and so forth, but if you can find me an
employer who's going to hire based on gesture drawings
good f*** in luck. I'll give you 50 dollars if you can do
that for me. So yeah, I 'm going to scan more gesture
drawings and studys tonite and post them tomorrow.
And I already know about line quality, form, gesture,
mass, solidity, proportion, but again, those are all
cleaned up drawings, on top of which I dont really
want to be a comic artist or illustrator by trade.
And as far as originality, sure my stuff might look like
cartoon characters or pop culture types of styles,
but most the stuff on this site is just bad anime
ripoffs with terrible anatomy and no sense of originality,
yet everyone praises the hell out of them.
anime is ok, I appreciate Ghost in the Shell, Princess
Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Cowboy Bebob, but
I refuse to rip off their style cause too many other
pimply faced kids and 40 year old men still living in their
parent's basements already do enough of that.
So I'm trying to find my own style, and maybe I havent
found it entirely yet, but at least im doing something
other than an overly muscular dude with guns and
bigger tits than pam anderson like everyone else.
so make of that what you will
and lets see your stuff, buddy, and if its anime ripoffs
than my point is already proven.

p.s.
p.s.
I'd post more, but have to go out and get some ass, unlike you probably,
. I dont need to imagine and draw gigantic breasted chicks all day, cause
I see the real thing on a regular basis. So yeah, this is a message for
everyone. I love Art and you should too, but go outside once in a while
too and get some real girls, not big breasted anime porn.
thanx
this message was brought to you by the corporation for stopping the teaching
of klingon and star trek porn cause thats just wierd.
September 11th, 2005 #5you asked for a reply - you got one..and heres some more
I TOTALLY agree with your assessment of the cliche that is FANTASY ART - 90% of whats out there is for 14 year olds who've overdosed on Anime and D&D and now regurgitating it for the next generation of kids...
Its great that youre trying to find your own style -I AM TOO!
but saying that these are finished drawings doesn't change the fact that they are still very stiff and un-original.
When you put yourself OUT THERE- EXPECT CRITICISM...obviously you werent ready for it.
AND... I will be sure to send you an email to let you know when I post...I wouldn't expect any less from you or anyone else- an honest crit.
THANKS!
September 11th, 2005 #6What the hell, i know you lost it man, i know you studyed all you have to study...........but you crossed the line between humility and arrogancy.....
Who are you to treat the community this way?, who are you to condenm Asiatic Styles from asiatic users who have all the right in the world to do it?, Have you seen the finished seccion????....
The fact people dont have art to show doesnt make them lie, or talk shit...
You DONT have drawing problems, but the designs you posted there are to stiff, and is a thing you could work on, it wont hurt you, and the comments made by Rascar werent made to hurt you or for himself to declare himself as superior to you.
So far everyone is right except for you in your mind, i advice you to see the post, take a deep breath, if you are still mad, take a walk....if you are still insulted take hot bath, and then post....otherwise the one talking shit out of his mouth will be you >
, and you will end up insulting people that didnt deserve it
September 11th, 2005 #7You've got an awfully funny way of going about it.

September 11th, 2005 #8Mad props for handling that critique so well.
Maybe you should stick to sculpting, your drawings are pretty sub par by comparison.

point taken, but another retort
First of all, I am not arrogant, I don't think I'm the best artist in the
world, and no one should think that way because there is no such
thing as progress without progression. Take the band Radiohead,
they started out more alternative rock, and then got really gutitar heavy
and melodic on the bends, and with ok computer and kid a got very
electronic. The point is they're all good albums, but dont repeat themselves.
And what I make tommorrow probably wont look like what I made before.
I hope it doesnt just as much as you guys do. That's the point of
being an artist. So sorry to get any of your respective panties in a ruffle,
As far as being stiff in drawings, they were largely done for an animation
drawing class, and I was instructed to simplify the figures, to break them
down to simple lines and forms, so they arent supposed to compare to
say, Ashley wood or Jon Foster drawings, I have the utmost respect for them,
and I hope to someday be at their level. But they were supposed to be simple
characters with simplified detail for an animation character. And I can admit I am not, as not are a lot of students, and recent grads at the level of professional artists. Those guys work their asses off and inspire people like
me to do the same. So I dont take what they or I do lightly.
And a third note, I do art to have fun. If it stops being fun for
me than I'll quit. I'm sure a lot of people have fun drawing wolverine or
anime characters, and I like drawing spider man, but unless you want to
work for Marvel, then I'm not going to copy them.
And I will post some "non stiff" gesture drawings tomorrow.
And on a final note, mission accomplished on getting some booty.
goodnite.
And

Apology to users, administrators of CA
After some more (sober) thought, I just want to apologize to the users
and administrators of CA. I love this site, and wish there were more
venues to show artwork for those not recognized for their talents.
I know I can be impulsive and irratable, I guess after 5 years of school
critiques and being out of school a year, it was a nice break to just
do art for pure enjoyment, and not mastery. I just want to add I have
been on antidepressants recently, have been through some bad stuff
lately and thus may take out my feelings on others, but I certainly don't
want to offend other artists or the administrators of this great site.
I am and always will be in awe of Rembrandt, Rodin, Van Gogh, Da Vinci,
and more contemporary greats like Alex Ross, Jon Foster, Dr.Seuss,
and the like.
So I will try to be less veangeful in my replies and try to be
objective about my work. I was just tutoring at an elementary
school since graduation and the kids liked my art, but I guess
kids are easily pleased.
So yeah, I'll work harder, longer, not sleep, and loosen up

September 11th, 2005 #11I don't mean to step on anyone's toes but posting on Conceptart.org means getting lots of critique and much less praise. If it's praise you seek, there are a lot more websites out there where you can get just that but know that only critique and commenting will help you further your development. An artist can ever only continue to grow.

September 11th, 2005 #13hey welcome to CA
all your figure studies, sketches and practice stuff dont belong in the Finished section. an admin will probably move it. heres my thoughts on your stuff so far, and afew questions.
Prodominently your problem is stiffness in your characters arms, legs, neck and back.I think your best piece is Andrew128Tou the blue figure sketch of the man keeled over, although his abdomen and thighs are too thick. and wow just noticed his shoulders, they are wayyy to far appart.
Maby bring his left shoulder behind his head and just suggest that it is there.
the top of his spine is strange and weirding me out too.I think its because he is hunched over yet his spine remains compleatly flat at the top, like he has been folded in half at the begining of the rib cage.
hope some of that helps.
PS - you realy need to adjust your attitude a little around here. what you've been here 5 mins and start loosing your cool and telling people off for giving critic that you specificaly asked for. thats just rediculious. seriously.
well you got afew now, but because you went all weird on people i think alot of it will be extreamly negative and not about your art.I hope to get more than 0 comments this time.
September 11th, 2005 #14Your sculptures are your best pieces by far. As for the "They're aren't stiff because it was animation" comment...animation should be very fluid and you don't have that. Even your gestures aren't loose. Sorry for the crits...
...but don't be an ass when someone gives you a crit! That bullshit about "Well, I'll wait until I see what you can do before I listen to what you say" is the worst reply I have heard in all my time here.
I'm glad your kindergarten kids are impressed. They'd prolly be impressed if I pulled out something SHINY.

September 11th, 2005 #15->moved thread
you need critique...so this is the best place for you getting help...
September 11th, 2005 #16dude are you for real?! "mission accomplished on getting some booty. goodnite." thats the fucking lamest thing i've ever read in an art forum. unbelievable! who the fuck cares, only someone who never gets "booty" would brag about it to a bunch people who don't give two squirts of piss. so next time refrain from recounting your sexual exploits cause, jacking off doesn't count as "getting booty". maybe you should get to drawing instead... in your case, lots and lots of drawing.

September 11th, 2005 #17good evening.
I have three main pieces of practical advice I can offer you right now:
One, is that when you read crits and they upset you (yes that can be very normal), just resist the urge to post while upset. Wait, calm down and ask yourself this: Can I learn from this?
Resist every urge you have to post angry! I'm sure we've all regretted posting while angry (I have).
Two, and this is important, this thread is about your artwork. Personally attacking someone who took the time to give you a critique is really bad form. (especially making derogatory comments about the entire forum and its members
)
Three, resist the urge to make excuses, they only hurt you and your progress... and we really like to see people progress here. (its our secret little guilty pleasure, along with vodka and chocolate bunnies)
And thank you for apologizing, you'll find that if you show a desire to learn, we can be very forgiving, and one day you'll be laughing at this thread and poking fun at yourself.
ok onto some crits, a lot of it is echoing what has been said.
I too believe your best area is sculpture from what we've seen. They have the most "life" and feeling to them, and I wouldn't mind seeing more sculpture. Would I be wrong to guess that you really enjoy sculpture?
Your character sketches were very stiff, after viewing your life drawings I can see where it is coming from, those are also stiff, though not as much as the character designs. This isn't something you can't change, it might require a new way of looking at things though. Its almost like you want to control too much? I think that might be good for inking? (maybe not), but can kill the life out of a sketch or drawing. Try some drawings and dont' worry about "going out of the lines" or going all over with big swooping lines, get the feel of the movement of the piece first, its like follow through in bowling. It won't hurt anything and you can always darken the finished lines, or leave as is, just practice is all. Honestly, I find that making loud sound effects for my lines works well... in other words, whatever works to help you loosen up.
Those hand studies aren't pretty good, the top one has something really funky going on with the wrist, it looks a bit too skinny and straight for the hand.
Thats all for now, take care and ... never stop learning
oh and couldn't resist "...but I guess kids are easily pleased."
Yes they are, its about the coolest thing to my nieces if I make fart noises and act like a monkey.

thanx for the criticism, and I didnt mean to be a jerk
Hey again,
Thanks for the criticism and sorry once again if I offended anyone
and if nothing else at least we argued about, something most
of my friends dont really do.
So yeah, no more hate mail, I wont if you dont

September 11th, 2005 #20Hmm, as with most of the crits here, I agree that the sculptures are much better than the drawings, regardless of whether or not they are simplified. While I like the warewolf, I think it could be pushed a bit further to express more anger and/or agony. At the moment it comes across as though it's performing shakespere.
cheers.

Are you for real? With "venues", did you mean here? With "those not recognized for their talents", did you mean yourself?

If you take some sketches and put a fancy border around them with the title "character designs", people are going to assume those are the best you are capable of. If those then look stiff, unoriginal (do you have any idea how OLD minotaurs are?), anatomically questionable, and one is cut in half (inevitably leading to the assumption that the legs were just too horrid), people here will not be impressed. Sorry.
Your drawings remind me of my own, some twenty years ago. I think that any improvement I made was mostly due to doing lots and lots of figure studies, but more importantly due to never being satisfied, or thinking I deserved "recognition for my talents". Think of why you want to be an artist. For the recognition? For the big breasted babes that throw themselves at the feet of successful artists? Or do you want to tell people something through your art?

I was gonna do what MM just did had I not read through the whole thread. I thought: "Wow. That's exactly what every 14 year old tells me after a nice ass kicking in Call of Duty." Most of those kids are in a clan too, not me though :3

Hey dude, I did apologize, and stated I was drunk at the time,
so who doesnt say stuff they regret when they drink. I will make
it a point not to write on here after a bar again. I promise, and
if I do you guys can kick me in the nut, not nuts, cause I need
at least one if I'm to have kids some day, god forbid we need more
andy juniors running afoul on the world. But yeah, I never meant
to disrespect concept art, I love this site. I just need to learn to
take constructive criticism, I've been told that before, and am
listening. At the same time, I simply also believe if you, or me as
an artist feels strongly about something they'd spent a lot of time
on it's like your baby, and if someone says your baby's ugly your
gonna get a little upset, but I can have other baby's and sure
maybe some will be ugly, but I'll keep trying... .... man
I forgot my point.. anyways, yeah, no more hate mail please. I'm fragile.
