The Society of Illustrators, New York City

The Autumn Drawing Retreat sponsored by the Illustrators’ Partnership and the Society of Illustrators is just around the corner. We hope to make it a relaxing, stimulating and informative few days, devoted to the art of business and the art of art. Our planned events will be informal, with the focus on individual participation. If you wish to attend here’s the line-up so far:

    FRIDAY, Oct. 7

    3 - 6 PM

    Arrival and sign-in

Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street

    7:00 PM
Meet your hosts and fellow artists for drinks at the Society of Illustrators Kick-Off Party in this 19th century carriage house's beautiful 3rd floor bar and patio filled with original paintings and illustrations. The evening will last as long as you do.

    SATURDAY, SUNDAY, Oct. 8 - 9

    9:00 AM

    Coffee and bagels.

    Drawing Sessions Begin

Draw from life at the Society’s second floor and join your colleagues at the sketch excursions in Manhattan's dynamic landscape. We’ll supply the models. You supply the art.

    Mornings: 10 AM - 12 Noon

    Afternoons: 2:30 - 4:30 PM

Specify your preferences for each morning and afternoon sessions on both days selecting from a variety of options:

Indoor Life Drawing at the Society of Illustrators:

Nude figure drawing hosted by Victor Juhasz

Clothed figure drawing hosted by Tim O’Brien.

    Outdoor Sketch Excursions in NYC:

Drawing field trips will include the Fulton Street Market, Central Park, Grand Central Station and the Lower East Side among others. Drawing on location hosts include:

    - Tim Bower

    - Frank Costantino

    - Brad Holland

    - John Howard

    - Lynn Pauley

    - CF Payne

    Evening Activities:

Saturday and Sunday evenings will feature presentations and Town Hall sessions to discuss some of what we've learned about the state of our industry. Following these talks, there’ll be plenty of time to continue discussions or socialize in the Society's dining room, bar and patio.

    Saturday night presentation:

    How To Protect Your Copyrights:

Andrew Berger, Esq. copyright attorney (Tannenbaum, Helpern, Syracuse & Hirshtritt) and author of the “Copyright News You Can Use” forum, will explain how to protect your copyrights and answer your questions.

    Sunday night:

IPA Town Hall: Will the “Orphan Works Study” Change Copyright Law?

Over 1,500 artists and 42 international artists' organizations signed the IPA’s letter to the U.S. Copyright Office regarding the government’s proposed “Orphan Works” legislation. On July 26 and 27, IPA participated in the Orphan Works Roundtables in Washington. We argued that existing copyright protections should be maintained and we proposed a reprographics-funded Copyright Society as a way for artists to protect their rights collectively. As the Copyright Office expects to make their recommendations to Congress by the end of the year, we’ll bring artists up-to-date on this issue and discuss the impact of the "Free Culture" movement on our long-term rights.

    MONDAY, Oct. 10

    9:00 AM

    Brunch at the Society

    Presentations by:

Robert Jay Kaufman, author/illustrator of ""Blockology: An Offbeat Walking Guide to Lower Manhattan" " will tell us the tale of his hikes through the city and how his love affair with New York developed into this book, his love letter to it.

Frank Costantino, internationally prominent architectural artist and founder of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators, will discuss his work with a slide presentation that focuses on the world of urban art.

Keynote and Closing Remarks: Terry Brown, Director of S.I. will close the Retreat by discussing the role of the illustrator in a changing society, and how the Society of Illustrators itself is responding to change.

We invite you to join us for these three days of renewal and reflection. What you bring to these three days in October will be part of what we all take away from it. We hope to see you there and if you have questions or need a registration form please contact the IPA at

    Thank you,

The Board of the Illustrators' Partnership of America
