wow, interceptor... nice start on that.... just a suggestion... I like the magical feel that you have started here already... everytime I see these great fotos or videos of these beautiful enchanted places from around the world there seems to be some kind of waterfall... A beautiful waterfull that culminates the essence of purity and safety.. my idea is for you to perhaps implement a water possibly surrounding this beautiful castle he just left from... a castle that is only reachable by a small strip of land. just a thought... good luck to you...

Mainloop- man i must be dyslexic.. cuz i thought you asked how many people are on lsd

    I like it.
Please give some more informations about the picture.
What size is that ? Looks very big and what did you use to draw ? A colored pencil ? Is there a special reason ?
    Thumbnails ? Sketch ?

    NEED INPUT !!

thats really cool interceptor, this picture reminds me of Tales Of Sympthonia. I like the way you draw with blues, and pinks, and i think your style is excellent, keep up the good work.

Vigostar - Man, you totally read my mind. I guess I just needed someone else to say waterfall as well to actually do it, or I may have taken the cheap way out and just done nothing but trees.

    Sirio_Brozzi - Thanks a ton!! I hope I can finish in time!!!

Poshspice - Thanks a ton, I'm sure you're already expecting for me to begin harassing you about help for colors, hahah.

Fellah - Many thanks to you!!

Vaejoun - Well it's on 15 by 20 illustration board. It's my first time using anything like this. I had originally tried to go for a watercolor painting on my pal, Sara in a dress about osme junk.... but I've been doing nothing but drawing portraits of short haired girls lately, so I decided to go for a big pic with mostly environment I'm just using a 0.7 mechanical pencil with that weird pilot color eno lead.. I find it's nice for me because it does'nt smudge, I can rub my hand back and forth all over the board adding little details without smudging it to pieces. And for inking it's way easier to tell if you've inked over some light blue or pink than it is with graphite. It also erases like.. right now, it's really cool. But mainly, I use it because I like the color pink When I finish the lines. I'll be using a good old bottle of india ink and some brushes to enhance the lineart (which should take way too long)

And there were no thumbnails of it or anything, I just started with the head and set my playlist to my game soundtracks and let the rest take care of itself, ahahah.

e n d e r Thanks, e n d e r!! I'm not very good with colors at all.. but I WILL see that it gets colored as best I can. It will be a while, but it'll get done, for sure

Prophet Funny you say that. That's one of the art books I was flipping throuhg for 'inspiration'. Along with the art of:
    Princess Mononoke
    Stwar Wars: Episode III
    Final Fantasy XI

Colored materials are really fun to use!!

Thanks for the comments everyone. When I get home from work (which it looks like I'll be late for" I'll post an update , and explain what everything in the darwing is!

    hey interceptor,

firstly, let me say, this is super nice.

the only thing that bothers me is his/her right shoulder.
    imagine the body without clothing,
    it should be foreshortened.
you have actually indicated that the space between the neck and the shoulder is waaay longer on the farther side.
    it should be reversed.
more likely it is a problem with the neck placement than the shoulder,
but i would hate to see you redraw that beautiful face.
you can probably fudge the shoulder a little to compensate.

this might help you to see it.
the bottom pic is a slight adjustment.

aeoxo Thanks a ton, man!! I'm shocked you even remember some of my other stuff!!

Poise That realy means alot coming from you, T. I will definately take your advice in treating this as a lineart piece rather than a regular painting. I'm fairly scared to apply ink, though. Maybe I should should scan it in as grayscale? Thanks alot for your reply. You've always been far more helpful than I could've hoped for.

DSillustration Anytime I ever see a comment with your name beside it I get scared, because you're a superstar But then they're always incredibly helpful. A friend of mine told me there was a shoulder problem, but we could'nt quite pinpoint it. Thanks alot for your draw over, I'll be sure to fix it first thing I get home today.

Fantasmatic, yo! I love what you're doing with the background. DSillustration caught the foreshortening issue, so I won't repeat that.

I'm loving how this is coming together, I can't wait to see this when it's done.

One little suggestion though, the waterfall, the way you've drawn it, looks 'ragged'. I think it'd be more fantasy and dreamlike if you did a soft waterfall, kind of like those that you'd catch on photograph over a slightly longer exposure. I absolutely love the leaves flying around.

exDevlin Thanks, bud!!! I'll do my best to fix the waterfalls in photoshop. The lineart had been erased to much from fixing things that it was beginning to not erase so well anymore
p.s. we still need to go for sushi

Quick_Sketch I totally know the feeling, huge sprawling environments! That's why I love Miyazaki!! I had the art of Mononoke at my side the whole time, lol.

    Here are the final pencils!!

    Higher Res version

And as I promised.. a description

1 - This is a plant found common in the region.
    called Kootu plants.
The taste it bittery and yet tangy ( like marmite! ). And you get the
strange jelly from the bulbous tip of the plant. The
stem tastes really nasty by it self, but is apparently
very good if you boil it as broth.

2 - These little rodent creatures don't have a name yet..
maybe they'll just be a special kind of mouse. They're really
    jumpy, fast little critters.

3 - These are the tails of the little mice guys. they
stick thier tails out from the trees to pretend theyt are Kootu
plants. Then when bugs and even smaller creatures come for the jelly
    they get nabbed!!

4 - This is one fo the seven suns. It's the only one that
produced heat. On this planet, Serthia, different suns do different
tasks. So it's not as hot as you may think with all of the suns.

5 - This is a bow, that he gets way later on. It's called Saggittarius.
It's not magical or anything, it's just very well made, and pretty
much can't be broken, unless it by some like.. massive troll snapping
    it over it's knees.

6 - The strand of hair with beads in front of the ears is very popular
with yougn boys where Gatery is from.

7 - The tattoo under his eye is part of the coming of age ceremony.
When they set out on the journey of the first part of the tradition,
they get one tattoo, and another, more personal tattoo later.

8 - A map, that he technically should not be carrying.
It should be under the care of a knight named Rush. Who I was
going to put in the picture, but opted out fo doing so.

9 - Lucky rabbit's foot. His culture is highly superstitious.

10 - The latch of the boomerang. Because it's not meant to be used
as a weapon really, but more as a tool. Say he needs to throw a
line of rope over a gap to a tree or something, that's what he
    uses it for.

11 - Just some beads. His culture is known for alot of cool beaded
jewellery. It's even so popular, that many women from hsi area
can make thier livign making jewellery for rich people in surrounding
    kingdoms.

12- These feathers are a part of the journey. A rare bird that you are
supposed to collect them from. The birst only comes out one night a month,
when the moon is full, for about an hour.

13- Another one of the suns. This one gives energy directly to plants.

14- This rather large sun is a staples to mages. It's where thier energy
comes from. Without it, they'd be pretty much powerless. Foreshadowing?
    I think so.

15- Tiberoa Castle. It was built ontop of what was once the largest
tree on Serthia. So beacuse of this, the Castle is always rising as
the tree goes. The people here say that when the castle reaches heaven
the king will speak with god, to make peace on Serthia for eternity.
This is considereed just a legend, though, like the story fo Adam and Eve,
    per se.

Where the castle connects to the tree, there is a constant waterfall in all angles. So
it is pretty much imspossible to attack Tiberoa by boat. That is why
you see the side of the castle that really sticks out. There are 3 of those, they
are landing strips for airships. The waterfall can be closed in sections though.
for trading goods purposes and emergencies.

16 - This is yet another sun. I'm not quite sure what this one was for again.
I made the basic premise of the story... My pals Sarah and Brian are
doing the writing, so I tend to forget some of the details at times.

17 - This is a steel mill. As you can see, there are smoke stacks in the side of the building.
Some people spend most of thier lives in these things. They are very long
shifts to work in one of these places. But your housing and everything is
inside there, also. Really, it's a small community of it's own.

    Thumbs up

    Whoa man, this stuff rocks!!

Seriously this stuff is really good, it's very detailed but it's clean and tidy so I can tell what each part of the picture is easily, and the focus is really balanced, my attention is distributed very well. Must have taken you a heck of an effort.

I'm also loving the character design, very distinct, and his eyes give him a strong sense of personality and determination.

I don't know much about this competition, so the topic is meant to be "The Road Home"? How close do you have to stick to the topic?

What I mean is, if the contest strictly demand to protray a road home, then I think you may be stretching the topic dangerously far. Because "The Road Home" has a strong connotation of homecoming, while your picture carry the feelings of setting out, adventure and going outside the comfort zone.

It probably doesn't matter, I mean I don't know this for a fact, but maybe your stuff fit well within the parameters. I'm just noting that it will be really crap if such a awesome picture get downranked because it doesn't adhere to the topic.

Pixeldragoon You totally should. it's always fun to be challenged. Even if you know you're going to get beat down, lol. Thanks alot, d00d

strych9ine Cheers, man!!!I will most definately color it! and I want to take Poise's advice in keeping it simple. But even so, I'm not sure how to approach the picture. I spent like.. 5 hours today with photoshop open just trying to think about where to begin... Than I gave up and went cryign to Poshspice and Poise to ask them for advice, hahaha. That's right, Inty.. run home to mama.

Shatterdome I bought this Middle Earth encyclopedia about a year ago, and saw all the stuff involve din the lore. Down to the smallest Flora and Fauna. I thoguht it was so cool. And we found it easier for story purposes, too. Once we started getting a really tight feel for the world of the comic, the story just kind of started flowing very smoothly all by itself.

ParkerD Thanks alot man. You're always one of the first to provide crits and comments, always one of the ones I'm scared of when I post because you'll show me the errors I need to fix. But I'm really grateful for that!!
    You're a real good chap

JERI I totally appreciate the comment, d00d! I've been drawing this character for years and years now. And as for the picture relating to the topic.. I'm not sure if it really fits either. I kind of noticed that on the way back from getting it scanned. But I guess the "road home" does'nt have to be about GOING home. For Gatery, it's more, the road home is something he won't be travelling down for along time. but he thinks about it alot because he's off on a big adventure, and it's something old and familiar to him. But actually I know it will qualify .. because.. I'm half hosting it, hahah. It's so starnge. Against flaptraps here on CA, I barely spent anytime on my thunderdome pic. But he's one of the most skilled artists I've ever seen. but against this like.. 16 year old girl on a little teen chat forum, I put alot of effort into it.. No idea why..

The final linework on this is fantastic! As for colour, if you're doing it in Photoshop, it depends whether you want to keep the linework in the final version or not, but I'd block in some big blobs of colour in the mood or ambience your going for, fogetting about detail. Just get a feel for it. If you aren't happy with the way it looks at first you can use the colour options to fiddle with it or just change the hue and saturation. When the mood feels right, start pulling the colour in by adding shadow and reflected light. There's no right or wrong way, it just depends on how you want to do it. I think the line is so strong it might be nice to keep it in as an edge to work too, rather than covering it up with the body colour. God, I'm wibbling here...

Stoph It is an old character, I draw him almost too often, it feels like I have no artistic range at all. Thanks for your comment, though.

Poshspice Thanks, buddy!. I think you're right about keeping the lineart, too, like Poise said. I was debating covering it up, but everytime I look back at my workspace behind me and see my first completed lineart I chnage my mind... anyways.. thanks for your help

I'm not sure how to approach the texture on the fabric.

Wow that looks so pretty, I'm no expert in painting, but I would say that when painting fabric it is not as reflective and shiny as skin is. Maybe just get some refs of some similair cloth to figure out the difference.

here are some that i found which may be of no use:
    just regular clothing
and a painting of some costumes that have more of the funky colors you used

BTW I would love to see a closeup on that face, any chance?

Quick Sketch - Woh, thanks for the painting ref, that's actually very helpful. As for a closeup....

I'm just picking at individual things to color because this is going to be my first actually complete piece and don't really know the steps of doign it. I just get frustrated by not seeing any progress at all.
