    Wiki for tutorials

I was thinking about setting up a site with a Wiki where people could register and create pages on different art related subjects / tutorials.

Does anyone think this would be useful? I can think of why it would and wouldn't be, but I would like to get other people's opinions first.

UPDATE: The Site is Up :] @ WALKTHROUGHS, feel free to edit anything and everything

Wow his name is oddly similiar to a popular mod on here, than he thinks people are going to buy his "I just happened to lose my membership and I found it again" meanwhile he is resurrecting every single web hosting thread ever posted on this forum....he's a spammer.

Thats a good point, imo it an alright idea, and any alright idea can turn into a great one if executed well - only thing is, sites cost money and free tutorials dont really bring in much rev, so you'll have to resort to ads and that sort of thing.

I can see how people might think I'm spamming, I'm just trying to catch up on this forum. I registered in February because someone wanted to know about my hosting and kind of fell off.

    Edit:

Well I have multiple servers across the US. I can host any of my own sites for 'free' since the servers cover their own costs really. Advertising may be feasible in the future, but I'm not too concerned about it right now.

If its not a problem with money, and you have the spare time, i'm sure many people would appreciate it, there's nothing worse than coming across a great tutorial a year late and the images are all dead links.

Yea, I've been meaning to get the tuts back up, but I have been restructuring my hosting business, incorporating, yada yada yada...

I think a Wiki would be an interesting way to add a community spin to the whole site, additionally people could update / modify tutorials as need be. Ideally it would add a way to make the tuts much more comprehensive.

Of course the real question is, would anyone contribute... At Walkthroughs we hired writers to receive a portion of the ad revenue, which then enticed the writers to promote their articles. It would be harder to do that with more people being allowed to sign up.

Offer nothing and you'll get shit - simple as that, if you want original material, no one worth anything is going to it for free.

Good tutorials draw crowds which translates to traffic and rev, because of this, artists would like to get something for it, very simply its a symbiotic relationship - but if you start charging people to join as well, it would essentially turn into a kind of online school, and then you'd be competing with the likes of places such as Gnomon online school, or animation mentor or cgsociety, which have a combo of: strong online presence, strong physical presence, top quality material, big names that do the teaching.

Hrm, it may be better to use the Wiki but make it private and keep control over the tutorial writing. Then we could appropriate the funds for each individual artist who writes. Last time we screened submissions, there were quite a few not so good ones.

Other members could sign up to flesh out information that is linked from tutorials, like what is this and who is that.. since Wikis link themselves up automatically. Extra pertinent information. Making a more thorough experience.

Hrm, whatever happens, it must be a quality site. I'm tired of all these bogus tutorial sites on the net.

Any suggestions to making a good tutorial / information site is welcome.

Start looking through people's sketchbooks here is a good start, start pming the ones you're impressed with once you have your structure sorted out.

Dunno, Davi's name is written around there a bit so I guess so. Seems pretty cool, hope it takes off.

first of sall, I would like to say that the idea for a wiki is great. i think its a much better medium for tutorials than this forum. To be able to have a few tutorials, and then edit them to make them better would be awesome. There is thousands of tutorials out there, but how many are collaborative? If you understand the concept of a wiki, then i dont need to continue.

I wonder thif that "official" wiki is perhaps in a beta mode kind? At any rate, now that weve all seen it, It would be great if a admon could verify its official status.

Also, Perhaps there should be a section for links to other tutorials. I have a large number of tutorials bookmarked or sazed on my computer.. At any rate, they may be a good refernce for anyone making a tutorial.

I added some stuff to the links section of the wiki.
I used the real names (alphabetically sorted) of the artist. Bengal is the only one where I used the nickname because I have his name but I don´t know from where (so I don´t know if it´s correct).

The problem is that some of them are really well known online with their nicknames. Should these be added? I think yes but then what to use for sorting the names? Their real name or nickname? try using the nickname as much as possible and just switch to real name when there is no nickname?

I think using the real name for sorting alphabetical and adding the nickname behind the real name is ok.
If you really look for someone's nickname you could easily use "CTRL+F" and type it in.
And Davi added a wikipage about himself. Should that be done too? Then there could besome info like: active on which forum, link to site, interesting projects, list of (art) books where his/her work can be found.

And if there is a artist specific wikipage then how should that work with the links section. Should these links be wiki-internal or just outside links or both?

And I added people who are concept artist, and IIRC one or two who are fantasy illustrators (and create stuff for their illustrations) but who are not strictly just concept creators. Should these be removed? I think they fit in.
Should there be a little description after the link so people know what type of work the artist is creating like:

Craig Mullins: concept art, illustration, matte painting

And if someone could take a look around and look for typos or broken links (my keyboard is old and sometimes doesn't type some letters or just the blank space).
I will keep adding links in the existsing form for now and adopt of there are some better ideas/improvements.

Comments would be nice because the earlier we get a good structure the easier it will be in the future to find things there and to add things.
    That's it for now.

Edit: added a list of companies in the links section.
Now when I open the Links section I can only see that there are concept artists somewhere because the Table of Contents says so at the right side.
Should that probably be structured different? Because if these lists get longer it will really be a mess.

I added a blurb about light, sort of drafty. Also made some sections for composition and value. It probably needs to be conformed into some layout standard.

Jamen jag tror att han skäms, och har gömt sig. Vårt universum det är en av dom otaliga spermasatser som Herren i sin självhärliga ensamhet har runkat fram för å besudla intet.

I just wanted to ask how to delete a site.
I created a site for links
    http://www.sciboy.org/cawiki/doku.ph...s_to_tutorials
But I canged the name to
    http://www.sciboy.org/cawiki/doku.php?id=tutorial_links
and now I think it should be changed because I wanted to change it to "perspective_and_construction_tutorial_links" or something comparable.
That way there would be less links in the index that are nondescriptive.
Now we have three "links" in the index and noone knows what exactly these "links" are.

Probably creating a category like this:

    links:perspective_and_construction_tutorials
    links:light_composition_and_rendereing
    links:artist
    links:game_companies
    ...
    would be better?

The problem with structuring that thing is that it´s very open in the begining.
And BTW for teh perspective section I created a extra links section.
Should we keep that or do it like prom did in the composition section where he just added the link inthe composition entry.

My basic idea was to have everything in sections but I don´t know if namespaces work that way.
    For example:

    Perspective and construction:
    *General perspective tutorials
    *Animal, human, monster construction
    *Props, vehicle, weapon construction
    *Background, landscape, matte construction
    *Tutorial links

And the links section would have links to these sites:
    * tutorial links (from perspective and construction)
    * tutorial links (from light, composiion and rendering )
    * game company links
    * artist links

And the two "tutorial links sites (perspective,...)" in the two sections would link to the same "link_perspective_blah" site.

Is there a way to make that automatic in wiki because IIRC that cross referencing was something that works in wiki.

I hope that was not too confusing.

    Another edit:
I changed some things. Does the organisation work now?
here is a little tutorial summary:
    http://www.sciboy.org/cawiki/doku.php?id=tutorial_links
    I will be adding more.

JokingClown: Thanks for the tutorials but I am not sure if sites with tutorials that only use Photoshop filter are that useful here. Could you sort your links (you probably know best what type of tutorial is where).
My old Athlon 500 doesn't like many tabs open at the same time.
And you can easily add your own links in the wiki if you register (takes less than one minute).

I added some final links in the links section
    http://www.sciboy.org/cawiki/doku.php?id=links
this time game industry related and indie game related (just a few). The focus is still on conceptart but you need to know the companies you are working for.

    BTW http://www.massiveblack.com/index.html update.
    Or was it already announced?
