How does one go about getting commissions?

After years and years of working at dead end jobs, I finally want to try my hand at doing commissions for people. Does anyone have any ideas on how one goes about starting up a clientele?

Get a website and advertise. I'd suggest putting an ad in a local paper or newsletter. Put up flyers on public bulletin boards. That kind of thing. Once you do a few, word of mouth should help.

If you were looking to do work for publication, just go to publishers' websites and look for artist submission guidelines. I find RPG companies are really good for that especially, but publishers of a more literary nature often do too. Magazines as well.

    Good luck.
