    hello there,
still getting back into the groove of things. should be there soon. crits welcome as ever, mind you know the light and shading on the bat thing is awful and that its wings shouldnt really be double jointed like that...
(also i know one of the robo-harpys hands appear to have the thumb on the wrong side... but i liked the look of it so i kept it (aka lazy))

Hey old bean, good to see some updates here. How did you final project thingy go? Did you actually get it done?

For the bat thing the hashing for the bg looks nice and tight but the creature it's self could use a bit more detailing/ constrast.. maybe make the lower leg darker than the background and do some more hashing/detailing on the upper body?

    Looks quite promising, finish it!

    I like this as well.

cool, thanks for the comments lads. especially aefx- i wasnt planning to finish the robot armed lady cos ive never been good with shading and shading intricate mechanical bits kind of put me off- but im well happy with the result also darkened the bat things legs (didnt know which one you meant so i did both of them..lol)

also a sketch of a sword lady which im quite happy with. ive always been more of a line-person than a shading/light person- this summer it changes (thanx jim for putting me to shame with your super roland flex)

Christ, this is impressive. We're about the same age, but you're miles ahead of me skill-wise.

Really loving how you've shaded the woman with the sword, the mark-making and anatomy has been executed extremely well. And the Bat-creature, just leaves my jaw hitting the floor.

My sketchbook, if you really want to see it...

kagemusha22: seriously i am fcking bollocks compared to some of the other people on here, our age, some are even younger. this place is rawly humbling to anyone......standing on the shoulders of giants! if anything its motivation to give it your all.

tigermilk: joker! my typing has only gotten worse really. yeah im working on my anatomy and i got a few books-but i decided that meticulously studying anatomy wouldnt help me much. im going to be concentrating more on basics like nailing volume, form, light etc..... anatomy should fall into place a lot easier once ive got that other stuff

marleen: thanks baby. you at uni? ive still got a year or two- a one year foundation course and then maybe a gap year....

updates coming soon darlings. thanx for the encouragement

shamandalie: cheers- its my new years resolution. hope u stick around
kelly x: i think ull find that my art is hardcore enuf. hahah i didnt do anything amazing i just added a transparent layer of white on the pic, added a noise filter on photoshop and upped the contrast on the dark bits. it was just to show people what i meant by dust- i didnt think it was convincing in the least. your best bet would be to find some ref photos or even better, take one yourself.

so, my, time flies. getting back into drawing , then again i always say that. heres some assorted junk from october onwards - need to get back into this fantasy stuff, all im doing is portraiture....

Haha, dude I just have to say that I lol'ed at your thread title. Nice pencils you have here, I think I dig the characters from your head the most, though there are a few anatomy and proportion issues at times. And it may have been said already, but it looks like you could use some hand studies, you seem to have just scribbled them in or just flat out avoided drawing them on a lot of these.

Really great post Sean. Massive improvement mate.
Im particularly impressed with your lines. The contours and shapes youre drawing are bang on. The zack and mimi one is something special!
The only crit im gonna suggest is one of rendering. Youre shading along the contours which is great. But I think you could approach it alot more softer and slower. Really build up your rendering bit by bit starting as light as you can. And dont leave much space inbetween your hatching, try keep it as close together as possible. (of course this is all depending on wether you are going for that look, which it then becomes a style thing). But yeah, slower and tighter rendering should really help I think mate.

sa-weeeet! you have some really nice lines. favorites are the fourth one, and the second and third to last ones, now start experimenting with colour and tone like you want to. Do some B+Ws first and don't stop on an image until it's looking exactly how you want.

pyroclasm: thanx- yeah anatomy isnt my strong point. started doing more regular studied recently so that should improve. i dont pay hands enuf attention, for sure, ill do some studies n get back to u on that.
kian: charmer yup thats a common critique of my rendering, im too impatient so i dont take the time to slow down and do it properly. i hope this update shows that ive taken ur criticism on board
rob: consider this an experiment with tone. ill get onto coloring soon, promise
    wookiedabo: ....cheers!

so given that ive been doing a lot of life drawing and portraiture ive done a funny monster thing to get my imagination rolling again. trying to slow down my shading and pay more attention to textures. i couldnt draw the hairy goat legs though, someones gonna have to give me tips on rendering fur...

Hells yeah!! That's really nice man. Really really nice.

The lighting kind of looks like there's lava pits either side of the path, maybe you should expand on that, have molten lava covered arms reaching out of the fiery pits to grab him either side, and he's just like "uhhhh, another day at the office" and make the path he's walking on all crumbly and rock like at the edges.

The legs are fine, only thing I would say is that you should give him at least a bit of a shadow, kind of looks like he's floating.

Just suggestions. Looks sick already man!

business demon on the highway to hell, good times. points for the lighting, especially on the outmost horns, very detailed. also, nice attention to the darkness around the head area, it communicates in a subtle way.

I can't really pick out anything wrong without getting excessively fussy, but I will anyway-- something about the left arm seems improperly foreshortened. it's hard to make it out what angle it's supposed to be in, the lighting doesn't indicate that it's above the belly and the demon's head extends forward too much to be able to see it pressed against his chest. even a human head couldn't do that comfortably unless they were hunched, which he doesn't seem to be.

also, I see his head is turned to the left slightly, but the rightmost wing's 'stem' is slightly longer than that... yeah, I suppose that's really it, besides not giving him shadow under the body, but the background was probably just a throw-together anyway.

I just left Firefox for half an hour, sorry, forgot what I was writing. I'm just gonna submit this without looking over it 'cos I'm cool.

quikenobi: thanks ill try the up/down thing.
rob: yeah,a ctually i was thinking to add more and step it up a level but it got to a point where i just wanted to finish it and move onto the next piece. its fixativ'd now so i wont edit it but ill definately work a context into my pieces next time
pijus: "inspiring"- thats a big compliment. thank you,!
kian: haha thanks. not shading the contours as much as i should but one step at a time...wasnt easy to work so slow
allan: hit the nail on the head with the center of the piece (hand area etc) really wasnt bothered by that point and kind of thought i could get away with not putting much effort in....u got me u can tell i started with the head, gave it a lot of tlc, and just sort of skipped the bits i wasnt interested in...

so u lot, heres a dump of sketches from about half a year ago- some good, some not so good, but i just wanted it on the record that i did a little bit of work in my absence. feel free to crit anyway

woo updates. looking forward to seeing where the comic goes. I like the first sketches for it better than the second. If you want him to look more approachable, I'd suggest playing with the shape of the eyes a bit, they look a bit too droopy, not natural. good luck
