The digi paintings are going well, but I'd try to make sure you go into them with stronger shapes before trying to get more detail in. Good luck at the atelier, I'm jealous

errr been doing some armour studies mostly medieval plate armour and stuff so this morning i decided to do a quick value study on armour under daylight... i think its a still from a film. dont think i learned much so ill do one from imagination as well

people tellin me that i need to stop being scared of colour and maybe do a few colour studies because that as well will help my values. i just really want solid control of values before i start playing with colour ....

ok this is where i did the bulk of my learning today... using a single ref pic of a figure under daylight and using my imagination to extend that to other figures i did from my head. really helped me learn the qualities of daylight and using thumbs just forced me to keep it simple and just do the main light/dark masses. also learned a bit about contrast. will be doing faces in this way soon.

thanx koto.i plan to do that a lot from now on,
    1. it helps me learn and i can revise what ive learned later...kinda like school
    2. its nice to give back to the community a lil. show you guys what i'm learning if i want to grow i gota stop being afraid of showing my weaknesses....this is a sketchbook, its for improving....

i should really wait until i go to bed before updating.. end up doing it twice a day. anyway a bit of nagging from various people (..alex) i did a quick colour figure from imagination. yea thats right. COLOUR. i need to get over my fear of colour.... sloppy brush work but its ok it was only a little doodle anyway

Your work looks really good. You seem to have a good understanding of value in black and white. I think you're ready to try some color. Color adds a whole new set of problems, grayscale painting doesn't always prepare you for all those problems. One example I think that gets looked over in grayscale is reflected light. If you have an person standing next to something green, you'll have a very slight green light on the person. In grayscale I find things like that get forgotten.
Don't be afraid of color, color is probable the hardest thing to get right simple because you can do so many things with it. Keep up the good work
Also I think you might benefit if you do some more finished things. All your stuff looks very rough and sketchy which is good for learning, but if you spent a little longer and clean everything up it'll look much better and may even be a decent portfolio piece.

Hey Seanus, hope you enjoy your atelier. Liking those hands, you know any good reads for hands? The digital stuff translates well but the brushwork makes it look muddy as you said. Maybe go at it with larger size and chip away at it. Keeping it large helps you to think about tone placement, then as you work into it with more detail you may find some areas work well flat against those sharp transitions or whatever. Hope that helps.

    -Ben from UWE.

I'll keep heads on your work, I'm considering making a sb myself once this module blows over. If there's anything concerning the word 'meet' then let me know.

Wow, strong-ass stuff ya've got here mate... your progression in figurative drawing's really making dividends =)

Liking your hand studies- spamming 'em till ya get them right seems the right strategy!

raichu: cheers ill try to update more often (i always say that..)
    softskin: ahhhh thanks
ben: thanks for the advice man yeah im shit at digital stuff but watch out on that front. as for book on hands i cant really recommend anything except, as aberzeim said, spamming them hardcore. draw your own hands then get a mirror and draw more and pull them out of your imagination. if in doubt always stick with bridgman and loomis i have looked far and wide and i have found nothing that really compares except the odd tidbit
    aberzeim: u're a charmer - sukh mentioned u
quike: ill keep doing the notes then, thanx!
    soro: will do

ok guys been at the atelier for a full term now..time flies. learned so much. cant wait for the next year and 2 terms! cant imagine the kind of progress ill have made by the end of it. im gona drop a few scans off over the next few days heres the first few. this is actually stuff from before i went to the atelier, stuff from my brief stint at uni half a year ago

    dump 2/3 some atelier progress

    Name: 030510_atelier_cast1lips.jpg
Views: 526
Size: 207.4 KB
first drawing at the atelier. cast drawing of lips in hb pencil. really, really, awful but then again i didnt really know what i was doing at the time. didnt know to unify shadow range or anything like that

    Name: 030510_atelier_cast2beethoven.jpg

Size: 127.4 KB
second cast drawing took a lot longer. charcoal, this one was a son of a bitch so many subtle forms leading to impossible halftones.... plus i hadnt even set up the shadow box properly. redrew the whole thing because i had made it in proportion but not sight-size. really annoying but a learning experience even if i dont plan to stick to sight size forever

first figure drawing i did at the atelier (done parallel with the first cast drawing) . HB pencil , completely awful but again...didnt really know what i was going for at the time.

evening class figure drawing. different approach with this one i tried to do it massiveblack atelier style (finish from top to bottom instead of working on the whole thing at once hence torso to legs are not finished and feet arent even started..). ended up with me drawing a nice face but not really bothering with/rushign the rest. may try it again at some point but i prefer traditional atelier method

second daytime figure drawing. HB. soooooooooooooooo much better than my first one. at least now i know, on some level, how to deal with light. need to get a picture of this with its head on . didnt effectively resolve the shins and hands on this one though i think nowadays i can do hands a lot better

Hey Sean. Good to see you're fighting those tones. Your line has come a long way so I guess it's the next logical step. Nice use of line weight, when I look at Tim's head I see the hair defining the forehead and and that itself speaks volumes to me. Might be something to explore but you're ploughing through at a pace that puts me to shame at least.

Well as I say I'll be around London so it will be nice to meet up at some point. I'll use this project to explore figures again and actually have something to show on this site. Ah well. Until next time!
