    matte painting...price??

yo, here where i work, (www.belief.com) we've got a project....we're thinking of hiring a matte painter but we dont even have a clue as to what the cost would be.
before we start looking at matte painters we'd need to know the basic pricing and figure out if its even an option.
any of you guys know how much they charge?

i know its got a lot to do with size/detail etc.

these dont have to be huge, they are for TV not film, and they DO NOT have to be photo realistic. in fact, it's probably better that they aren't photo realistic.

the sooner we get an idea of cost, the sooner the posibility of finding a thread in the job forum "matte painter needed"

    thanks guys

try emailing some top dog matte painters and asking for a quote. If it's too high a number, or the painter is too busy to help, then ask if they have a coleague they'd could to refer you to. people know their own kind.

    No problem =)

But by the way, I don't think anyone was trying to say you were cheap or trying to be cheap, Magic Man was disagreeing (if I am reading it right) with the general illustration "proverb that Tensai posted.

combine the advice from blankslatejoe and wassermelone:
a general 'what does it cost (or what does it pay)' thread doesnt result in much as you can see here..

so i suggest going to the listed mattepainters and mail them for more specific info.

a general illustration rule/proverb somebody posted overthere:
    Client wants it:
    1) Fast
    2) Quality
    3) Cheap

    Illustrator says:
Okay, you can pick 2 of those and the 3rd will be the opposite of what you want.

Sorry, but quality anything, no matter if you take 2 weeks or 2 years to deliver will never be cheap. Quality anything is never cheap, end of story.

well, my reason for asking was this:
for all i know, these guys could charge $2000-$3000 for a single matte painting, and THAT would be too much. if that were the case we'd come up with a different concept for the piece.
but, this link: http://www.mattepainting.org/ was amazing, and it helped us sooooo much.
    thankyou for posting that wassermelone.
we may have already found someone at around $800-$850 a painting, and we plan on doing our own camera mapping with the painting.
i never said we were cheap, or wanting cheap fast work, i just wanted a basic idea of price before pitching the idea to our client.
"Quality anything is never cheap, end of story" i know this, but you dont know whats "cheap" to us. we're willing to pay up to $1000 per painting.
if we had pitched the idea and they liked it, then we find out they charge $2000-$3000 for a single matte painting, then we would have been fucked.
see what im sayin? i just needed a basic idea before we pitched the concept.
you guys seemed to have made a few assumptions about what i wanted.
again, that link helped out tremendously. thankyou wassermelone.

i never said we were cheap, or wanting cheap fast work,
i can only speak for myself but the 'cheap' comments were not directed to you or your project. so dont take it personal. it was a general (flawed) pricing remark taken from mattepainting.org.

    good luck
