Concepts and stuff (mild nudity) *Updated 10/24/05*

    Hey ya'll,

Some personal stuff I've been working on lately... A couple concept sheets of different variants on my Blackjack Betty character and a pseudo-quickie that was supposed to be a Blackjack Betty piece, but didn't end up looking anything like her.

Blackjack Betty - Harlequin Variant (CS2)

Blackjack Betty - Dark Wushu Variant (CS2 and Painter 9) *Didn't finish painting her face, just seemed kind pointless for the concept sheet...

And the piece that looks nothing like Betty... (CS2 ArtRage Acrylics)

    Hope ya dig.

3rd is the best IMO. and maybe you could add a little definition to the gun/arm in the 2nd one (the pic from behind).

it just looks a little more washed out and blurry than she does

Hey malachi. As said before, tight and polished character designs here. I'm a fan on the Harlequin design for her neat curving silhoutte made by her shoulderpads and elbow pads. The spilt-skirt piece is a great touch with the medallion pin off to one side on the front and the small pendants on the ends at the back and the basket-hilted rapier is awesome.

The third is hot! I've been loving the latest stuff on your site, btw

Good work Malachai! I love Betty Page. I wish the figures on the middle one were a bit bigger so I could see more. They feel a bit lost in that big white space. The third one is sweeeet!

I agree. These are all very nice. Love the more gritty style you try here. For all it's worth, I think it suits you way better.

Sweet. Definitely show us the other turtles (and my favorite villain of all time - Shredder... well, if he wasn't such a dimwit and if there was no Darth Vader or Hannibal Lecter ! Keep it up!

Thanks guys, glad you like him.

Redesigning Shredder would be a ish load of fun, good idea. I was also thinking about doing a toad version of the TMNT, but I'm not sure if a shell-less ninja toad would be too far from the original TMNT concept. Hmmm, have to put some more thought into that one...

For now, a Dark Knight redesign...

*note the vents around his crotch so his bat-balls can breath*

    Hope ya dig.

    Haha, lovely.

The "gasmask" bothers me thou, the bright yellow light, how scary is that?

Other that that, he's cool. Looks like a super soldier.

I like the little shield on batman's forarm and the glowing on his bat symbol is cool. You also have really stong sense of color in terms of lighting. Good job!

Very good batman!, the only crit would be the lights, they look great but would give him away in the shadows,..unless they are night vision lights, and serve to aide his own vision, in that case they are in some good locations for wall crawling ...

the new face mask realy resmbles a bat alot more, and I think this is a very good direction to force the "batman" design, It would be cool to push that even more, ike how todd M, aproched the spiderman design.

just curiouse if the white, as opposed to black backgrnd is a style choice or if it seves another purpose?
    thx

    Hey folks,

Pencilator~ Thanks for the comments. Yeah, the orange lights on his mask might be a little too distracting, I'll probably change those back to blue like the rest of the lights....

Bowlin~ Thank you very much for the kind words.

ArtisticSchmidt~ Thanks! More on the way, trying to fit these in on brakes from work. Any requests?

NOOSE~ Thanks again for taking the time to comment, Noose. You're of course right about the lights giving him away in shadows. When I was designing him, I pictured the lights being able to be turned on and off. Off while he was trying to be stealth-like and on when he's going for dramatic impact. Like scaring the crap of some scumbag-criminal in an ally by switching his lights on right before he confronted him. The whole idea behind my Batman design is to bring back the "dark side" of the Dark Knight. He's supposed to strike fear in the harts of his enemies and the old blue and gray suite just didn't do that for me. I also gave him a face mask, because it just never made sense to me that his face be uncovered, just makes him more vulnerable that way... As far as the white backgrounds go, I don't know, just being lazy I guess. Wanted to focus on the character designs and not environments.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment all.

Should have a new character design up soon, till then...

    Take it easy,
    M

    This Hot!!

Man, this stuff is hot!! I dig your rendering style. I think I like the nija turtle the best. The lighting is really good. It make me feel as if the character lives in a space on the page, even though it is white. Batman is pretty dope too. Love to see more.

If you get a sec. you can check out some of my stuff at http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50615

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks for the comments.

ArtisticSchmidt~ Thanks for the suggestions, Daredevil would be fun to redo... Maybe something more Asian inspired, push the blind-ninja thing even further?

FugitivePencils~ Big thanks man, glad you're diggin' them. I checked out your thread, you've got a great sense of design and I like the stylized anatomy you're going for. More refinement in your lighting and values wouldn't hurt, but I don't know of any artist alive that couldn't benefit from improvement... Thanks again for commenting.

Here's today's installment, my take on Wolverine. Definitely inspired by Jon Muth and Kent Williams vision of Wolverine in the old Meltdown series...

    Wolverine + Fonzie = Wolverelli

    Heeeeey.....

    Hope ya dig.

slick! I dig the sly looking mug on logan ...and the stripped down costume is cool, his arms look a little "juiced" up lol not sure if he has been using performance inhancers lol... although I am partial to the "hairy" armed bush man look of old, but your modifications are refreshing

I like the whole re-design kick you are on, ...I have to finish my ninja with lens-flare painting now

these are so much of "The Awsome". very cool designs. really show of some interesting concepts and character. i do agree about the breath mask on batman, looks like he has to big yellow fangs.

i really like the black betty, has that pin-up style, (the hair i think) to it.
