I had been asked by someone who struggled with cross hatching, so I put this info together that describes what I do when hatching. I know there are better ways of learning and techniques better described, but here it is for what it's worth.

*One important thing is to make your strokes along the contour of the subject - imagine the shape and 'sculpt' the strokes along that curve or plain. When you're drawing find the most comfortable position of holding the pencil to create nice arcs or diagonals with each stroke. Use down strokes or up strokes - you'll find which you prefer and which gives you the most control.

Try to keep the strokes an even distance from each other. It will take practice. Know your light source and use dense hatching (criss-crossing) in the shadowy areas and use less lines and allow them to taper off in density in the lightest areas

I've made a quick reference guide that illustrates some of these tips. Again this my own approach that gets me the results I like, there are many techniques and better ways of learning hatching - and practice as much as you can.*

I'll keep adding little by little. Hopefully you'll keep looking - even if it's a little at time too. Crits and comments are always welcome.

Hey thanks, crazy3dman. I think her eyes are the closest to what I remembered about her.

Here's an adjusted Red Sonja, so that she doesn't appear to be so thin.

With some added props and the inks completed - I finished it up with color. Let me know what you think.

Inked and colored in Mirage 1.5a.

...and some close ups of this iteration:

Here's a finished Sonja piece that is posted in the finished works section. And a pencil montage of the model I referenced for Sonja's pose - Eva from Femjoy.com.

Thanks for checking in again crazy3dman. I grew up in the time of silver age comics and my idols were John Buscema, Neal Adams, John Severin among others. They influenced me quite a bit.

Thanks Darkchild. There has to be a moment just before a battle, it just makes sense. I hope I added a little suspense so it's not a completely boring image.

Just a few sketches from a film I did boards and inspirational art for last year. A live action family film with (football) soccer as the backdrop of the story 'Her Best Move'.

And a color piece from the pencils on the first page of this thread - http://www.trubalcava.com/sketchbook/Espalda_BW.jpg
It was based on photo ref.

Gotta love your pencils! It's the nice variations in line weights that just sets the piece off.
