    Clothing Inspiration

i was just wondering where or how people got inspiration for drawing clothes onto characters.......iv been spending loads of time working on facial details but when it comes to a full body character design, i keep drawing the same old crap over and over without any ideas

does anyone know any websites or something to get ideas from?

personally i have had similar troubles, what i've started doing is mentally (or sometimes quickly sketching) making notes of things i find cool in a TV show/commericial/movie whatever. Even picking out basic design elements that really appeal to me in other's work and then using that huge collection of resources to piece together what i want.

for examle i love the costume design of the series Farscape...

    ...its just badass

I like to take my inspiration from historical costumes, I always have an eye open for old pictures and books. I think I belong to the very few people who´ve been going through an Kamasutra-edition, looking the clothed people and copying the costumes I´ve got always an eye on historic movies, too. They maybe aren´t exact regarding historical authenticity but sometimes have good costumes.

Furthermore there are masses of online clothing shops and fashion catalogues. I´ve got a faible for gothic and fetish clothing (just for reference of course ... ) but there are a lot of ideas for combining different elements.

Like nicholas said keep your eyes open, try to combine elements - as you may see many artists here have somehow developed an own recognizable style even in clothing (e.g. Bengal or Marko Djurdjevic).

i borrow a lot from fashion mags, combining them with armor, or historical costume, or various uniforms

is true! i seen it, any fashion magazine for that matter. theres some really cool stuff from like weird eye make up to obscure costumes that could only be worn irl with great difficulty.

When you go in book bazars keep your eye open for history of custume, history of uniforms books, or basically, any books with old drawings of pictures pf people. I even bought an old history of ballet book, it's scary to see ballerinas in corsets but great inspiration.

Clothing? Depends on whatcha wanna do. All my characters are currently dressed up: suits, hats, ties, fancy collars, gloves, overcoats, canes, etc. Lots of fun. If you want a clothing style really fun to draw I'd give you pirates. All those buttons, ruffles, shoes, boots, sahses, bandoliers, oh god! FUN DETAIL!!! But you can also be inventive and try and create your own clothing styles (which is a bitch). Inspiration comes from everything around you. Look hard enough and you'll find it
