How much to charge for a cartoon character?

I have to do a cartoon character for a company, and i wanted to know how much i should charge and how do i go about giving him an offer? for example:

I want to tell him I can give him 3 color char. concepts and then I will go ahead and finish the one that he chooses.

I want to charge him $400 for this job, 50% sent to my Bank account to start.
and then the rest he pays me when I finish.

should i ask to own rights or what? how should i go about doing this?

oh, and this job is just over the net, i prolly will not see him personally.

Hopefully people with some pro experience will reply, but I generally think you'd be kissing any future rights to the character goodbye from the start.

Being as its over the net, I'd definitely try to get some cash money in your bank account up front.

Sorry I can't be more help, I'm sure others will be.
