    The use of light

    Hey guys,

I'm new here but I've been interested in art and how to do it ( successfully) my entire life. I started painting about 10 years ago and after plenty of frustration and aggravation I feel I've learned one of it's open secrets. It's about LIGHT. Without it theres no color, no shine, no form.

There are a lot of folks here that understand this, but there may a few newbies to the paint world that aren't so sure about it.

Anyway I thought it was an interesting subject to start on. If anyone has anything to add. Please do, or if you disagree thats OK too. Just wanted to break the ice so to speak and I love talking about art. I've learned a lot reading so much good info here on CA. I want to share what I feel I've learned.
    See Ya BP

    Hello waronmars,

I guess I didn't make it real clear about the light issue in painting ( or drawing)
One mistake I see quite often when it comes to a color piece of artwork is that a lot of people think the background has to be as bright as the forground. It doesn't have to be. It can be rather subdued.

I think the fantasy artist Jeff Jones painted this way a lot at the begining of his art career.
