Talking The @Sketchbook@ of Happiness (with eyes, and other sillyness)

Just to introduce myself, im a 16 year old malaysian living in London. Like all of you, i love art. But only recently have i discovered concept art, and from then i was hooked. My favourite artists so far (still trying to find more) are Samwise Didier and the great John Howe.

So it begins, my crappy sketchbook. Hopefully as i get goin on this journey of forcing myself to work and draw etc, i will slowly be enlightened by the criticisms and advice that i hope you guys can povide so that i may improve, hopefully. Wow, quite a lot of 'hopes' in one sentence. Anyways, ill post everything ive done in chronological order since June 2005, when i first laid my hands on the wacom tablet and entered the digital artworld. I will also work traditionally and post some pencil renders that i will be doing.

hehe, my rendering of the Batman Begins guy. I really wanted more of him to be in the movie, cause he looked cool.

    Done for teleportation mishap DSG.

    Done for furry robots DSG.

For this one all i had in mind was, orange fur with glowing eyes. The way i work on most pieces is that before i start i have a very vague idea, very vague. Then as i start to work along the piece i start developing parts of the piece. I dont have a concrete idea before i begin a piece, which is pretty bad sometimes.

From "The ogre under the bridge dsg"

Just some Naruto character design i did to pass the time...using airbrush and pen on open Canvas.

Done for the "summoning the lava beast" dsg.

    from "creature celebration" dsg.

As you guys can see, so far ive been experimenting with the airbrush and pen technique, which i find quite ok. I will be trying out oils in corel painter as well.

Hey! Nice works! I was looking over your anatomy studys and theres is some mayjor problems with the guy http://img322.imageshack.us/img322/7...letonai6aw.jpg You only drew 7 ribs, The human skeleton has 24 ribs, 12 on each side. Theres much more that could be worked on, but i wanted to point that out! Keep on drawing!

Nice drawings man. I especially like the ice/crystal monster paint you got there, maybe a bit too symmetrical but thats easy to touch up later. One crit I did want to mention with your people is the eyes are waaay high. It sounds weird and looks a little wierd when you first start laying down lines, but its true...the eyes generally fall in the middle of the line from the bottom of the chin to the top of the skull (not the hairline...a common mistake is to forget that the skull keeps going up after the hairline)...as this (wasn't sure how you felt about me posting a pic of mine in your sketchbook so I just linked it) super sketchy doodly thing sorta illustrates I'm sure my anatomy is off in a few places, and this was drawn quickly, but I think it illustrates the vertical placement of the eyes. Hope that helped some.

Cthogua dude, thanks a million for the helpful crits! Yeah, my eye placement is a big problem for me. I think part of the problem is that when starting on a face, i ALWAYS start with the eyes without any measurement of the proportion. Its a habit that i have had for a loooong time. From now, i gotta start laying out the structure and segments of the face before diving in.

Glad you liked my monster. The annoying thing was that i actually finished all of it, and for once, i was really pleased with my colouring and tonal rendering. I was singing in glee and all when i realised that the photoshop, out of nowhere, just terminated on me. And guess what. I forgot to save it. It put me of art for a whole day, i was so annoyed. but definitely showed me not to leave my work unsaved.

Here is the first piece done in mechanical pencil, based on a photograph that i took.
I know i say it a lot, but ill keep on saying it:

    I HATE MY SCANNER!!!!

    Lame excuse, i know.....

I see you've progressed very much in the past few months with details, rendering of the human body, and anatomy. Keep at it!
