Cool stuff Jason. Neat style. I really like how you seem completely uninhibited. You'll take on anything. Any subject, and any technique. I wish I had more of that. Nice work dude!

    Tec: Hey thanks.

Tigermilk: It's funny you mention that, because that's what all this is going to be eventually. I'm working on this short story based on an Egyptian fable. That last enviro is for a scene where the main character enters Osiris' Hall of Judgement in the Underworld.

Anyway. Just one for tonight. I'm working on a Jenny Lewis porttrait. I just started this about an hour ago. There are some major things wrong..especially being that it doesn't at all like Ms Lewis. Still working on it though

okay...a small update. After I posted the portrait above I realized how old she looked and it just grinded at me...so I had to immediately paint some more. I think it's getting there. I need to shave a few more years though. And crits or comments on this one would really be helpful.

Update again. I worked on the background this morning. It looks a little busy in some areas..and probably needs to be simplified.

UPDATE: Worked on the face a bit. Started laying in the dress. The body is wrong, the pose if off. But it's starting to come together.

hey Jason, great sketchbook! you've got a really nice style going here, love your pencil work as well as the gestural qualities in alot of your figures (seem nice and dynamic). you've got some amazing environments as well, really like the one with the tall spire in the background.. keep it up! perhaps I'll see you at a sketchgroup thingy here in Boston if there ever is one

Hey everyone. Just a small update for the night. First is just a quick halloween speed paint. Nothing too fancy. And second is a character design for a project. I think I'm gonna try and do a character a night. I've seen so many others here do that, and their progress over time seem to jump incredibly.

Onir: Thanks man. Yeah...hopefully we'll all get together soon for a sketchbook meetup. Boston used to have a really good one going, but it seems people, myself included, got really busy.

    Hi All.

Little Update today. I've started full course on this little project of mine. It's gonna be for my portfolio. You may have noticed a theme in the last few entrees here (except for the Jenny piece). Essentially I'm developing this Egyptian fable, based loosely on an old egyptian story. (The original story was very short and pretty basic...as old fables usually are.) So I'm writting out the story, developing characters, scenes, environments, and eventually, some final paintings and maybe even some story boards.

The sketch below (about 1hr) is about mid-way thru the story, where the main character has climbed onto the leg of a giant scarab who has now taken flight across a grassy plain.

I'm gonna go further with this some more, so crit it if you want.
    Thanks

just a small update. added a green lightsource and colored the scarab plates a little. I noticed that most beetles have this translucent, vibrant, reflective color. tried to mimic that a little.

Quick update for the night. Someone said that the figure looked like he was sleeping...and I could totally see that...so I changed him up a bit. I'm in a "not-so-happy-with-it" sort of stage.

    WAIT...WAIT..WAIT. Hold the presses.
I just glanced at my jpg version of the image is it's all crap...What the hell? What's going on here. As you can see tonight I just repainted the figure and now...when I flatten the image I get all these weird 'brush' texture stroke crappola.

Anybody got a clue as to why this is happening. I just tried to resave it and again - same thing. it looks find in Painter..but crappy in photoshop.

Please help. Am i going to have to go back a day in painting.

AztcFireFlower: Thanks man. Glad you like
rblitz7: Yeah...i like that one too. i have a painted version somewhere.
Jens: Thanks for the heads up. Yeah..looking back I can definitely see that I'm skimping on the hands part. I'll have to keep an eye on that. Thanks though

So. What does everyone sketch with in Painter? Right now I've been switching between the palette knife and artist oils. I'm having a problem sketching with them, though, because everything looks very "dabbed" looking.

Here are a couple for today. Still working on the Egyptian story. The concepts here are for a warrior. He's lifeless, hence the ash-like grey skin.

one of the canyon creatures. i wanted to develop something that was a cross between mountain goat and human, with elongated arms for climbing.

    thanks fellah.

here's what that finish Jenny piece came out like. She's actually on display right now at my university's alumni show. it was kind of neat getting some nice prints of my digital work and then framing it.

more egyptian warrior studies: in my story there are two lost warriors that our hero meets up with, this one being the taller, stronger of the two. Essentially they are both dying and their bodies are taking the toll. The bottom sketch is of the story's hero, who is in a temple that's filling up with water.

end of the year dump: i'm just gonna post these sketches that were made into finished paintings during this past year. Not sure why I never posted these. And I wanted to post these earlier when I started the Egyptian work, but I didn't have the files at the time. These 3 Egyptian pieces were done 6 years ago for my senior illustration show. It's what started the whole Egyptian story that I'm redeveloping now. I have about 12 in all, but these 3 were done in oil on board and in watercolor. I'll have to dig the others out and post them some time. Oh and lastly, because I just found it on my computer, is another sketch for a painting of The Go! Team that I did.
