Attempted to do last weeks' CHOW but became sick half way thru the week. I intend to finish this at some point.

Sweet design. I love the way you tweaked her proportions. Can't wait to see this finished, and I hope you feel better soon!

Nice update...a shame you couldn't finish it in time for that ChoW. But the new one looks to be a good one as well...why not do that one?

luvazquez & Cacodaemonia: Thanks guys! Glad you like. I need to get back into an art-making mode. Work, plus sick, plus more work kind of stalled me out for a bit.

Update: Here's some progress on the Black River Crew gang leader. I redesigned the bike and redrew the character slightly.

Ah, I like the moped. The angle of it works much better this time, too. The handlebars seem very wide, though.

Thanks Cac! I think you may be right about the handlebars. Good catch

    Update:
I really like the way this is coming out...so i think I'm going to expand on the original CHOW brief and make a whole series of moped street racers. Maybe paint a couple of locals too. I dunno. Could make some cool portfolio pieces for a imagined videogame. (Bunch of Robin Hood gang members race thru the city, over main streets, highways, and labyrinth back alleys, to steal from the rich and then back to the poor. All the while chased by cops and landlords.)

Started painting and laying down color.

Little Update: The character is almost done, worked on the jacket, jeans, etc. I still have to figure out how I want to handle the helmet and sword...so i think I'm just going to start the bike next.

Very cool. I think you should change the color of the jacket and moped to match each other, since right now the moped is a warm red and the jacket is cool. They seem to me like they clash.

    Caco: Thanks!

Update: Finished off the bike (although - you know what, I may redo the handle bars, and maybe the tire too). Just have to do the helmet and sword and polish it all together. I think I may do 3 other characters, each with their own bike. Then do a backdrop. (Hmm, maybe do a villain too)

jatherip: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. It may sound silly, but seeing those '5 stars' next to my thread is one of my constant goals. I know it doesn't mean anything at the end of the day, but damn it, i just want to get better.

TheGnoll: Thanks man. Glad you're still stopping by. It means a lot.

    Cacodaemonia: Almost done. Getting there.

Mark Tarrisse: Thanks Mark. Appreciate it!

    Caco: As always, thanks!

Update: Just loosely sketched out the background for the moped gang. ( There will be 3 other characters - done at some point)

I'm aiming for desaturated colors - greys, blues, greens, some yellows. I want each of the main characters to really stand out - colorwise. So this is just really sketchy for now...just trying to get some different areas conceptualized.

awesome sketchbook jason! You have your very own and distinctive characterstyle.
And I really like where that last one is going. the character looks really cool already, just make sure she stands in the environment properly. So far her feet look out of perspective with that background. But it's just a first bg-sketch so I'm looking forward to the final.

Ah, sweet! I can't wait to see this develop more.

This was mentioned in the Idea Development course last weekend, so it's fresh in my mind: Make sure to be aware of the value of the background elements versus that of the figures. For example, right now the shape of her head is getting a bit lost because her hair and the bg are both dark. You might add a little hint of light behind her - maybe a reflection or a streetlight illuminating the wall back there? Then again, you still want the white fur trim to stand out, so you wouldn't want the bg to be too light, either. Something to think about.

HumbleEgo: Thanks man. Long live Nibru!

Fumble: Thank you. I can't wait either. I hoping to have some new portfolio pieces out of this series.

Cacodaemonia: Thanks!!! Yup, trying to keep those values in order.

monotony: Wow, man. Thanks! Yeah, I may warp her feet now that I'm placing her in an environment. Didn't really matter before...but now it does.

Mark Tarrisse: Thanks for the stars man.

Update: Reworked the shapes and values. I start in BW first then once I have the shapes, values and comp, I'll start adding in more color (Although, I placed a few of the overall colors I'll be using here and there just to test things out)

I'm really out of practice doing landscapes. I'm trying to not make the environment look soo...um, fake. Ya know? I want to find more natural shapes, even in the made made structures.

Started adding in color. Got to work on the background city still....looks like crap. More coloring to come, as well as add in details/textures.

I get what you're going for, but there's several things I notice. The first being, the girl herself - her skull structure seems relatively wonky, but that might be a sense of style.

The buildings in the background of the environment look incredibly numerous and close together. Almost as if anyone actually in that city would have to turn sideways just to scoot inbetween the buildings.

Last thing I notice, that girl and her bike seem to be HUGE. She looks like she's 13ft tall. The railroad tracks don't seem to get that much smaller as they go back, the bridge/railway thing that she's underneath doesn't seem to get much thinner as it goes back. Look at it this way: If she shrunk only as much as the railroad tracks do if she were to move into the background, she'd hardly shrink at all. Which would put her head as almost hitting the bottom of the road/railway above. Which presumably, is at least 20ft tall?

Given that her proportions seem to imply she is relatively short, especially in comparison to her bike...she (and her bike) should by all realistic means be half as large as she is right now, in the painting.

    Looks really very awkward.

Two Listen: Thanks man. Great crit. I see what you mean there with the perspective of the tracks and the size issue. Yeah, that definitely needs to be fixed. I think adjusting the width will help fix the size issue with the girl. (wider tracks in front, wayyyyy smaller in back.) And yeah, I agree that the background buildings are too close. I've never painted a city landscape before and so I'm trying out what brushes do which effect.

thanks for taking the time with your thoughts. appreciate it.

Mischeviouslittleelf: Dude. I'm really glad it's hitting right keys with people. I'm learning a lot from this series

palladium: Thanks man. It's weird hearing people tell me they like my style..or recognize my style, because for the longest time - from college til now, I always thought I didn't have one. I saw my friend's pro artwork, and thought, damn, I really need my own style too. At first I tried to consciously dictate it. But it didn't work. Then it just developed some how on it's own, just by practicing over and over again.

YES. Join the chows...I've learned loads from doing them

Update: Although late for CHOW deadline, I managed to color it a bit
