Very nice Bumskee. And I'm glad you finally did a horse...even half a horse. I have a few *small* crits for you...take them or leave them as you like.
The chest is huge...but that could be intentional, so... The front legs look short in comparison to the back legs, mostly because the knees are so close to the chest. Also, a horse's chest is normally quite narrow, so the front legs would be closer together. Again, that could be your intention. Otherwise...beautifully rendered! Can't fault you on that at all.
So...I'll see more horses from you right? After all, you should practice...in case another CHOW comes along requiring a horse... hehe, j/k. Stunning job.

steps for the ermm ChOW "death's horse"
funny enough I didn't think this would be anywhere near complete as I have now.. kinda thought I would be done with just a sketch.. but yeah...
well, I actually looked at some horse pics.. "research"... pbase.com had some nice refs.. I tried sketching out an idea.. but meh..
here are some I tried...
I just decided to go with this sketch.. I sort of had the idea I wanted a human under a horse skull embeded at the front.. you can see the faint initial super quick scribble in the back...
Then using my large collection of custom brushes.... I roughed out the background..how it was going to sit and where I guess.
I made this brush quite recently, for the horn.. I think the tree and shrub ones I downloaded from somewhere, can't remember where now tho...
so I drew out the horn..
Rendering.. in B&W.. nothing special..
legs too short.. and some more refining..
refining again.. now I notice that my horse is stuffed.. it was looking more like a deer/cow/dingo... time for some ref.. Oh and decided to add the name tags.. something about death made me realise I needed to make more reference to death..
I asked few people for help on making this thing more horse.. emily, bunny, tom.. tex, michele.. john.. ermm yeah.. most said the leg was too short.. Emily was kind enough to pinpoint lot of areas, like slouching back.. and so on.. with that I sort of made it half horse... lowered the ground.. and refined more..
After this it was as simple as putting a colour layer on top...
refined a little more
and with some adjustment stuff tom taught me. and some more little adjustments here and there..
it actually took about 8 hours all up.. or something close to that number.. reasonably quick I think.

Hey I guess horses can be fat too... Seems a bit more like a moose's proportions then a horse. Wierd how I can see that ever though I never draw horses either...

I just had the most terribly wicked experience going through Both your and Fellah's entire Sketchbooks. Thanks for the incouragements a few hundred pages back. You respond to mostly everyone who posts. You constantly are working. You wouldn't believe how many times I changed my background on my desktop in your sketchbook. Your a constant example of the path of an artist. You've been drawing and painting only how long 6 year is it. Wow!
Transition from Art Critic to Artiste - Diligence, that's all I need.

oh man. you know i love you right? right.
I kinda really liked it in the first few stages, with the snow on the ground. I mean, a good illustration should be refined and detailed, but i mean, without ambience it's just another pretty picture, ja
Keep it up, you old bag.

Great stuff on LRRH, your digital drawings are always a joy to look at.
Thanks for posting the stages of the horse as well, learned a lot just by looking at them.
that 100% detail shot is even more stirring, wonderful rendering and colours.
now I'm of to paint again,
