i just looked through all pages of your sketchbook and i gotta say that you have a looong way behind you, in a relatively short time...your work is awesome, such an unique style and great handling of colour. your line drawings are exceptional. great to have you here, i'm checking this thread. cheers

min thats actually perhaps one of my favorite images youve created or have seen on CA for that matter, no bs. i absolutely love the fact that you added the dirty atmosphere around her hands, something you see in only the finest of ciaroscuro master paintings armor, hair...truly superb!

Steps for the ChOW~
going to try and be little more specific.. and hopefully help someone I think.. I know it's hard to learn something off someone else's methods coz well it's different.. but yeah..
Firstly.. I chose the topic.. (god!!) yeah.. well i had help from emily and tom.. as usual.. thanks for the help guys! I wasn't going to participate but..hey what the hell... got carried away as usual too.. before I start, I looked through some images of other great artists, to inspire myself, always works when u don't feel like it.. and some armour images.. just to get an idea of what makes them shine.. didn't spend too long, I suppose I like to be the one doing it than looking at images.. always jumping ahead of myself.. probably not a good thing. So I started sketching up stuff... here's some I thought could have been a possible candidate.. might even go back and work one up.
all pretty loose and quick, you can see the finished one from there, 4th one from top..
So then I took it and cleaned up the lines.. so I know where things are.. sometimes I just go for it but since this was a little more complex and i can't make stuff up as I go.. I needed a good guideline when b&w-ing. it's drawn at 50% view on PS with custom brush I use for drawing.. link here (www.minart.net/temp/min_drawing.abr) it's just small 4~8 size brushes..
Roughing out black and white.. the idea is to establish some lighting.. I had the clouds in the background in mind, probably more dynamic but I kinda liked the randomness of this and went with it. As for roughing out the figure, I tried not to use 100% black or 100% white.. that doesn't leave too much room for finishing touch. keeping values close is probably the right thing to do, doesn't mean I do it right btw..
I usually start rendering from HEAD always.. but i got stuck on the head and it wasn't working out.. I think it's coz I tried to follow through the lighting and it didn't work.. seeing how the torso armour is the main attraction I jumped on that after spending 20~30~minutes on the head. Picking off highlights does so much for shiny things.. I think the best works by giving highlights in the middle.. and following it through.. with this I can do the head
that was much easier, I think it's more of a mental thing... the head rendered and the hair.. a little bit of the bottom half too.. I think it's important to not to abuse the highlight picking.. because not all things are shiney! and I do abuse it quite a bit...
SO I continue to render out the other bits, the cape.. and the bottom half.. also tightened lots of areas, especially the armour.. I think I was thinking "shine baby SHINE!!!!" ok maybe not..
I didn't do the details or patterns just yet, this kinda distracts me in valueing out the basic forms.. so I usually leave it to the last minute. Also made adjustments on details coz not all thing go according to plan!
Background.. I kinda like the textures but it will look awkard, so i detailed out some clouds.. as planned earlier.. One thing was to make sure it worked with the figure and wrap around it.. Not to distract it.. hopefully it kinda worked out ok..

I've sort of noticed this recently, but the trick is to make the end bit darker and lighter as it goes inwards.. I always thought it was the otherway around but it wasn't. so yeah.. this also seems to work well with other round forms.. maybe i've just been missing out on it till now!! OH MY GOD!
Patterns and other little loose ends gets tied up.. I noticed that with patterns I was losing the nice form of the armour.. so I had to work extra careful not to lose it but also make it SHINEY! BTW all the steps are mostly where I created a new layer.. I make them pretty random and don't quite put layers as per object.. the details of the armour can be found at the bottom of this rather long post.
Just a simple colour blending mode layer.. nothing exciting, I quite like this colours too, but I wanted the cape to be red.. I can't quite use colour layers too well, it's not my natural way of colouring things.. but it's quicker and gets the job done. AND mostly important is easy to tie the hues, values and sat together..
this is more where I want to head to..
I think the best way is just mix warm and cool. simple and works well..
I think I did a colour balance adjustment layer and some overlay layers to work on an area.. i usually just either erase or a use a mask..
Editing again.. and going towards more where I think is right.. warm background and coolers lighting.. picking off highlights here with soft light I think.
I noticed all my NOOB layer skills created lots of crappy edges.. and colours just going over everywhere.. so wrapped up the loose edges.. also used some adjustment layer again and edited towards what I had in mind..
I've had crits from various people just before the I went colour and here.. I slightly enlarged the head at some point.. I think it's an awkard angle.. where it's sitting but I didn't want her to look comfortable at all..
SO with suggestions from people I fixed things along the way.. tom suggested that I use a soft light layer with blue to throw in some nice cool lighting. which worked nicely! and fixed up some clouds in the back
here's some details..
I didn't use "MUCH" of the texture brushes or fancy ones.. just an oval brush, custom made! but it's just oval with flow setting I think. my default brush.. everything was just painted manually and I think it's works good too, maybe just a slightly longer but u tend to have more control I think.
[EDIT] I meant to say I mostly use the oval brush.. mostly..

beautiful posts man, those pencils from a post or two ago are amazing, great line confidence. CHoW looks great as well, love the colors and the pose. thanks for the detail shots and the step by step as well, always a big help. gaaah lots of inspiration keep up the great work!
