Mrdes' Sketchbook - Bunches of crazy [ Updated July 20th]
Heyyas. Been lurking around for a little while now and this forum has recently rekindled my interest in drawing. I owe so much to everyone here for all the inspiration and knowledge on these forums. It'd take me forever if I tried posting in the sketchbooks of everyone here who I look up to so I figured I'd just cover everyone by finally making my own sketchbook here and saying "You guys are super duper" in my own thread. So, YOU GUYS ARE SUPER DUPER. Thankyas.
Ok on to the sketchbook stuffs. I've never really kept a sketchbook that I regularily drew in. Up until recently my sketchbooks were just basically in school textbooks and binders that I doodled in hehe. I did attend some life drawing classes over the course of a few months though. Heres probably some of my first sketchbook that i plan on filling up. I found a black pen on the street outside my house and thought it'd be fun to draw with it, since i've never really tried to seriously draw with pens before. Started on June 4th, so here's what i did that day.
June 4th -
Mostly all my drawings have always been like this, just random doodle junk I make up as I go along. Tried to get used to the pen.
Saw someone here post their head study like this. Not too sure who it was but thanks a bunch. Did it with some ref to the original posters drawing, and some without any ref.
Tried the same sorta thing but with skulls. Equally as bad heh. mostly no reference.
Fairly quick pencil sketch. Didn't spend too much time shading.
I think i can count the number of compositions i've mad prior to this on one hand. I am totally clueless as to how to go about making good compositions. Something I definitely needa work on. Not even I can make out what some of these pics contain heh.
I dont know the first thing about corel painter or even painting for that matter hehe. But I really wanna learn. Little speed paint of some poses.
Saw two pics of these somewhere here I think but can't remember who's it was. Used them as references. Thankya.

Saw a pic of diff caricature head types. Figured itd be good to sketch out since i've never really been good at cartoony stuff or heads for that matter.
Some stuff I did not that long ago-
Foolin around in photoshop.
Did this during a class I think. No idea. heh.
These are actually pretty huge and I had to take a picture of. Pretty bad quality but oh well.
Just doodlin around in photoshop. Maybe make it bigger and use it as a desktop eventually. Far from finished.
And that's all so far. Comment and crit away!
Once again, thanks to everyone here because this place has helped me incredibly since I started looking around not too long ago.

Welcome to the board. I'm new here myself! You've posted a LOT of stuff and I enjoyed looking at them all! Looks like you have a born talent for art and I'm glad to see you using it
Your shading is awesome.. That's something I need to work on.. meh
Work on the heads a bit more, you'll get it, and those shape lines really do help once you get the hang of it!
Let me know how that photoshop works out for you.. That's something I've been wanting to try as well, I just have so much of the real stuff I gotta use up first. hehe.
Oh and I don't know if you listen to Sublime, but on their selftitled CD there's artwork on the back that reminds me of some of your doodle/collage stuff. check it out

More head stuff
June 7th, 2005 #6Wow you were right when you said you had a lot of painting going on heh. Great stuff. I definitely need to start doing some paintings.
Oh I checked out some of the art on that Sublime cd. Does kinda look like mine hehe. Kinda makes me wanna color mine in too.
Hey maybe a stupid question but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to painting. Is it possible on canvas if you're painting in acrylic to just cover it with white or something so you can re-use it and paint over? I figure it'd be good practice for me to just paint something everyday and paint over it the next day because stuff is expensive

Somethin I did today.
edit: forgot to mention I did this using a photo I saw somewhere as a reference.
Thanks for the tips Cobi. I actually got a few pretty big canvases that are stretched and have the wood behind em or whatever heh. So I'll prolly fool around with it.

edit: Thanks for the comments.
I'm so lost when it comes to color. That's my biggest weakness I think. I never even used to color stuff with crayons as a kid heh. So I'm pretty much just starting out and it's gettin frustrating.

Ok so this pirate came up to me today and asked me to draw him wearing his skullcap, and only his skullcap. I thought about it for a second and then agreed to do it, because hey everyone loves pirate life drawing.
I could only get a few quick messy sketches in because it turns out pirates cant stay still for very long.
(following pictures were drawn without reference as I sadly have no pirate friends in real life )
bored messin around in painter some more.

if you want to do painting with acrylics, a normal sketchbook should be fine, as long as you don't dilute them too much, but you should expect a little buckling. i'm just starting to use paint and think the best way to learn is to start with a very limited palette of colours and do some tonal studys.
those gestures you did in painter are great, very japanese feel.

Thanks for the tips and comments. I havent really gotten around to doing a real painting yet. Mostly just been fooling around with digital paintings today heh. Not having much luck but I guess I'm learning.
a Thai boxer
kinda rushed the tattoos n stuff but oh well.

Noticed some 3D stuff in some sketchbooks so I figured I'd post some randomness I was working on. Still a lot of armor parts, straps and such left but I'm kinda bored with him already so I might not bother finishing him.
Damn this page is getting pretty image heavy. Hopefully the 2nd page starts soon hehe.

got bored of doing anatomy studies all day heh.
June 10th, 2005 #22
and another day -
Bunch of unfinished stuffs I'm not too happy with.
Heh bit of da vinci. Struggling with this method of shading
A bit more simple but helpful studies. Messed up on the face profile I think?

and a brand new day along with brand new messy drawings. I find my anatomy studies are always sloppy because I can never really get myself into it. Ah well I'll work on it.
I might not be able to draw much more today so I'll just add these for now. Still havent missed a day so far though hehe.
edit: haha I love finding old stuff I did. A few years ago I had to do an acrylic painting almost as big as I am. Here are the rough pictures I made up. I'll try to get a picture of the finished painting in a bit.

coool stuff dude. Your 3d stuff is pretty advanced, and more of those limited line gestures you did a few days back are top notch. keep it up.
also, more pirates. you never can get enough of those you know.

Thanks for the comments. I just checked out your sketchbook. Never realized that you were the guy that made the Baba Yaga and the other models from the cgchat comps heh. Great stuff.
Still got a little time before the skatepark opens
worst writing ever btw.

haha, yeah, that's me. thanks for the kind words Still need to update my site with that and other pieces... I like your solution for running out of space on the page there... fits with the sketchbook theme.
nice studies all around! enjoy the weather

small character concept. little kid dresses as a frog on halloween, somehow the world basically ends and he survives. He thinks the costume is what saved his life from the apocalypse so he never takes it off, and hes always got a gas mask on. Kinda dumb but ah well I threw together a little mess of sketches heh.

What Do You Mean Dumb!!!
I never take my frog suit off ~~~ I just stick hose down the front and open the little flap in the back to get clean ~~~ it is a lot like a shower I think ~~~ haven't really taken one since the world ended. Good to know there is another surviver!
