Matt Smith's sketch book. Resurrected from the Dead - 6/14

My old sketch book thread is lost in months and months of not posting and all of my old sketches are lost due to bad web hosting. So I decided to start a new one. Today I'll just post some work that I have done in class this semester. I am going to try to keep this updated alot more often now. Thanks for taking a look and any comments are appreciated.

good lookin works especially what I'm guessing is an SP, I'll crit your old cowboy fella on the feel of the drapery it looks too random like you just through some shades in there. The volumes on the woman with the ball are great excellent shading ecept on her little finger where it looks like she's got another finger in the shadow

that's it I really do like your stuff, reminds me how much I need to get back into loose materials.

BTW your site link is linking to mattksmith.com not matthewksmith.com

I have been doing a horrible job keeping this updated. Here is a self portrait I just finished in painter, looks kinda dorky, likeness is ok. I have been in the dumps for months about my digital art, so I'm going to try to get digital sketches in between school work and what not to improve. I have been drawing a ton and will try to post them later.

Thanks for the comments young paddy I really appcriated them.

    Hi Matt!

great to see a sketchbook from you, looking forward to follow it !

great art in here, but somehow the faces doesnt look right... i think they are skewed or have the same face just with different surroundings...

maybe try to add some more face variations?

    just thoughts...

    cheers !

Hey Matt, you should update a little bit more often I think, or the paint troll will come and eat your soft parts.

No, just kidding, there's no paint troll.. Good stuff in here, your portraits are great, alot stronger then your digital stuff I think.

    Let's see more!

Thanks for the comments guys much appreciated.

Huricane, the skewdness might be due to bad reproduction of the paintings, I shot them with my camera and had to readjust them in PS using the skew tool. If the digital one looks skewed, that might be because I just shot a pic of myself upclose randomly and the camera distorts, so it was a bad ref, my face did look long in the pic. The faces are the way thye are due to where I was standing in class, if thats what you meant by face variations?

Olsen I am really scared of the paint troll, I dont want him to eat my wiener, so here are some more sketches I did a few weeks ago.

These first ones are just some gesture poses I did out of my head.

These sketches are from a visual devolpment class where we are doing the wizard of oz as a sci fi and these are sketches of the witch.

Here is a more finished sketch, this is my final version of my witch for class. By sunday I will have a full figure, prop, and background done. So I will probably update this again sunday night. I would have posted this with the rest but I havent posted anything here in a few days, so I couldnt wait. I am happy with this piece for the most part, I feel like I am getting some of my digital skills back, but there are things I still want to fix on it. I probably didnt go about starting it the best way.

hey man, your stuff is looking good although i would recomend pushing the darks a little bit further on your sketches, it makes them look a little more complete and well done. I am really diggin the form studies in oil, those are looking really nice. All around your stuff is steadily improving. Keep it up.

    Thanks for the comment prince.

Here is the underpainting for the fantasy piece I am doing for class. The image is rather blurry though, but I am posting it now, incase I forget to reshoot the image tomorrow outside or if it is cloudy out.

I really like the drawing of the witch again, you draw really well, very clean.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Bojee thanks for saying its clean, I have been working very hard lately on trying to clean up my work, I am usually very messy and in that mess is where I usually make mistakes.

Here is the witches staff, all I have left to do is the background and that should be done later tonight.

Heres the background. I am not good at doing backgrounds really. This is my first attempt at a BG only in a very long time.

The witch and the staff looks great, Matt. I like the fact that it's a lot cleaner then most of your work.

The BG in your latest post could use some cleaning up I think, but perhaps it's not finished yet? I'd atleast get rid of the outline on the skull. It'll look great if you put some more time on it, I'm sure.

Thanks for the feedback olsen. I feel like I have forgotten how to do digital art and it all comes out messy. I have been working hard on trying to clean things up and hopefully my next few finished digital illustrations come out alot cleaner.

Good stuff here Mat, that witch drawing has got to be the best in my view. Good clothing and shading.

    Keep it up

    Thanks for the comments Qxzi.

Here is an illustration I did for graphic design class. We have to take a book with crappy design and make it look good. We have to do 3 different versions, one image dominant, one type dominant, and one just all type. This illustration is for the image dominant one. When I have the rest of the book design I will post both together. I really tried to do something different, I used hardcorepixxx's images for some refrence. I wouldnt mind going back in and doing alittle more work on it so feel free to comment.

Baki: Thanks, hopefully I will get some more badass stuff posted soon.

Rebecca: Thanks, that piece is actually an Albrect Durer copy.

Just some Loomis sketches about 30-40 minutes on each face with a 4h pencil.

Here is some work from my second project for visual development class. The background isnt finished yet so I would appreciate comments on it. I will get my character posted alittle later, I have earlier works but I didnt like how they came out.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I really appreciated it.

Here is the big download. All of these are for my final project in my visual development class, expect for the last piece I will be posting which was for fantasy art. I have decided to post SOME (there are tons more) of the sketches that went with the project so people can see how ideas changed to get the final piece. For the class we needed a character, background, and prop. The character of the dragon was more developed than the girl with the wings, but I dont draw dragons much and he was giving me alot of trouble so I went with the girl. The sketches are in no particular order.

    fantasy art piece:

I should have my other painting finished in the next few days and will post that, I also have some figure drawings that I need to take pics of that I would like to show. THanks for taking a look and any comments are appreciated.

Your people pictures show lots of character, and I love the weapon designs

Hey Fl3wk thanks for the nice comments.

I havent updated here in awhile, here are just some sketches I did that past few days. I was going to do the Chow for this week, but I ran out of time so some these were for that, and then here are some Loomis copies. After I scanned the Loomis sketches, damn does that third head I drew looks terrible!
    Thanks for taking a look.
