Matt Smith's sketch book. Resurrected from the Dead - 6/14

My old sketch book thread is lost in months and months of not posting and all of my old sketches are lost due to bad web hosting. So I decided to start a new one. Today I'll just post some work that I have done in class this semester. I am going to try to keep this updated alot more often now. Thanks for taking a look and any comments are appreciated.

good lookin works especially what I'm guessing is an SP, I'll crit your old cowboy fella on the feel of the drapery it looks too random like you just through some shades in there. The volumes on the woman with the ball are great excellent shading ecept on her little finger where it looks like she's got another finger in the shadow

that's it I really do like your stuff, reminds me how much I need to get back into loose materials.

BTW your site link is linking to mattksmith.com not matthewksmith.com

I have been doing a horrible job keeping this updated. Here is a self portrait I just finished in painter, looks kinda dorky, likeness is ok. I have been in the dumps for months about my digital art, so I'm going to try to get digital sketches in between school work and what not to improve. I have been drawing a ton and will try to post them later.

    Hi Matt!

great to see a sketchbook from you, looking forward to follow it !

great art in here, but somehow the faces doesnt look right... i think they are skewed or have the same face just with different surroundings...

maybe try to add some more face variations?

    just thoughts...

    cheers !

Hey Matt, you should update a little bit more often I think, or the paint troll will come and eat your soft parts.

No, just kidding, there's no paint troll.. Good stuff in here, your portraits are great, alot stronger then your digital stuff I think.

    Let's see more!

Thanks for the comments guys much appreciated.

Huricane, the skewdness might be due to bad reproduction of the paintings, I shot them with my camera and had to readjust them in PS using the skew tool. If the digital one looks skewed, that might be because I just shot a pic of myself upclose randomly and the camera distorts, so it was a bad ref, my face did look long in the pic. The faces are the way thye are due to where I was standing in class, if thats what you meant by face variations?

Olsen I am really scared of the paint troll, I dont want him to eat my wiener, so here are some more sketches I did a few weeks ago.

These first ones are just some gesture poses I did out of my head.

    Cool stuff

I could use some advice from you! (No really, come visit me, my thread is lonely) I do suggest however, that you refine the self portrait. Then maybe post a picture of yourslef next to it. You get the idea. Also, I'm a big fan of the old man charcoal drawing. How many years have you been doing this?

Love the sketches of the witch, especially the profile of the skull. The master copies are nice too.

Thanks for the comments againt guys.

Sedig- I have been drawing ever since I was born, but to be more accurate I went through college once and got a degree in illustration, worked on my portfolio, to try to get in the game industry as a concept artist, realized I needed to improve more, so now I got to Laguna college of art and design and Watts Atelier. I have some Watts drawings I need to take pics of a post. The old man pic is a master copy of an ablrect durer piece.

Bojee- Thanks for the nice comments.

Here are some more sketches for a painting I am doing for my fanstay illustration class. I should hopefully have the real drawing finished by tomorrow.

I wanted to create an arm like knightmare from SC but make it a sword instead of a big hand.

Here is my composition, excpet on the real drawing I zoomed in more, got rid of the funky sword arm and decided to have normal arms and the hand in the air will be holding a sword the opposite way to add to the compositional flow.

Here is a more finished sketch, this is my final version of my witch for class. By sunday I will have a full figure, prop, and background done. So I will probably update this again sunday night. I would have posted this with the rest but I havent posted anything here in a few days, so I couldnt wait. I am happy with this piece for the most part, I feel like I am getting some of my digital skills back, but there are things I still want to fix on it. I probably didnt go about starting it the best way.

    Thanks for the comment prince.

Here is the underpainting for the fantasy piece I am doing for class. The image is rather blurry though, but I am posting it now, incase I forget to reshoot the image tomorrow outside or if it is cloudy out.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Bojee thanks for saying its clean, I have been working very hard lately on trying to clean up my work, I am usually very messy and in that mess is where I usually make mistakes.

Here is the witches staff, all I have left to do is the background and that should be done later tonight.

Heres the background. I am not good at doing backgrounds really. This is my first attempt at a BG only in a very long time.

The witch and the staff looks great, Matt. I like the fact that it's a lot cleaner then most of your work.

The BG in your latest post could use some cleaning up I think, but perhaps it's not finished yet? I'd atleast get rid of the outline on the skull. It'll look great if you put some more time on it, I'm sure.

Thanks for the feedback olsen. I feel like I have forgotten how to do digital art and it all comes out messy. I have been working hard on trying to clean things up and hopefully my next few finished digital illustrations come out alot cleaner.

What was the specific assignment for the witch piece? If it was "creep the bejeezus out of small children," you get an A. plus. I'm very interested in seeing the finished product...

Thanks for the comments sedig, the project was just to take the wizard of oz and make it into a sci-fi. The class is basically a sketch class, but I might go back and render these pieces out more. I definately want to clean up my background more.

Here is my digital practice for today, alittle less than 90 minutes in photoshop, from a photo ref.

    hey Matt,

oueff dunno why I havent popped in here before - some nice stuff i'm seein!

Your paints and sketches right at the top look really good, and im diggin the hero chap with sword paint too, looks like its coming along nicely
You are grasping anatomy well, and your digi rendering is getting better, just keep doing what your doing and work hard on both fronts. The witch project shows some great imagination, although i like the earlier sketches of her head better I think. I especially like the most recent envirn wip you posted, even though its really early, it has a nice eerieness about it - look foward to seeing more.

Cheers, and apologies for any incoheirantness - its first thing in the morning

    Eri

Here are some sketches for my next project for visual development class. We get to come up with the story this time. So in short it takes place 1000 year after an apocolyptice battle, so many things have grown back, but alot of technology and old magic was lost. The main character is someone who wonders around kicking some bad guy ass, but he is a bit mysterious too, he carries some ancient technology and magic with him but keeps it hidden. And the background I am trying to create is an ancient ruin that has now been over grown with tall trees so its hidden deep inside a forest. The sketches will be posted in order from beginning sketches to stuff done yesterday.

    Gauntlet ideas.

Good stuff here Mat, that witch drawing has got to be the best in my view. Good clothing and shading.

    Keep it up
