Don't draw heads, construct them! On your first page of heads you've got a couple that are just made from planes, and so have been constructed as 3D heads. They are the best ones! The proportions and shapes look correct, plus there's some form to them. Start with something like that before adding the details, get your form right first. Also try using it in conjunction with references. Look at the references to get an idea of where the plains are. This will get you used to how everything sits on a head - at the moment your eyes are too close together and aren't wide enough.

I like the thumbnail postures you've done, I'd like to see more of them.

    Keep working away.

It really is amazing, the difference from your first posts and now. The bad part is how good your figure studies are, and how they really don't translate into your sketches.

I have much of that problem too, and depend way to heavely on reference. I wish i could give you some insite on how to undo that, but again im just as guily of bad posture and preportions when I try and render a form from memory.

Some of these are Awesome though, especially the arms around the eye picture. Your environmentals are decent as well, something i have been meaning to get into.

Yeh i do tend to do that alot, i can work well from reference, IE my bridgman book and a few of my drawing will be very close to that but it wears off.

Im just like you, i hardly use reference.. only when doing studies. I try and directly remeber the pose ad where bits lie, im getting better ast actually understanding forms and such not just what like one direction of a torso looks like...

Hopefully ill expand my studies and become better at remember such poses and stuff. I think for me, as i dont use alot of ref, is to be able to remember all the poses and stuff snd all the angles and such associated with it, so i can construct a full body and character from my mind, like a human library of the body... so no ref needed.

Id probably say about 60-70% of stuff in this Sb is no REF..

All the char designs will almost always be no ref... only slightly reffed because i did a bridgman study 30 mins so i kind of translate it into the design.... from my mind though.. not direct refernce.

I might be going the wrong way about this, but ive always seen using refs as copping myself out,, taking a short cut as it were, of course it isnt, but its like drawing from life. I dont really enjoy it that much cus i find it to easy, albeit im not perfect at in, as such people like Mind Candy man are, but it doesnt seem to challange me mentally. Where as drawing from my mind forces me to remember thing think about constrcutions and so and lighting,..... not just copying something... im creating it all individualy.

This is where im still learning.... and im far from perfect at it, but thts why im here to practice recieve crits and learn.

Sorry about the big speech, i just like to let out some feeeling every now and then .............*starts to cry* .....

    anywho..

    Thanks for the comments MEGAMAU.

I am digging the shit outta those industrial design sketches mate especially with the marker stuff, looks like you're a natural at it! (which is much more than my damn jr artist who doesn't fucking listen to me...grr) - you might wanna look at sitting down with a good anatomy book sometime though, its a litte inconsistent.

One word of advice - if you like those environment and vehichle designs...stick with it. Character and creature designers are a dime a dozen - just check out these forums for example, 9/10 sketchbooks are filled with pages after pages of nothing but characters, good industrial designers are a lot more rare in film and gaming divs. Designing in perspective is difficult as shit, thats why, there are no concrete rules to follow like the human forum

Not saying that character design takes no skill - it does, but there are a lot of character designers out there. Go fishing where the others dare not fish, and you will catch your prey!

    Keep up the good work.

    The printed /makered /penned version.

Talking with cookie in IRC the main problems here is the lighting. evrything come off flat, and it looks plain. No contrast etc.

Gonna work on it more, monochrome stuff, will help when i get to doing more colour work etc.

I think im getting at better at heads i seem to be able to add more character to them... they still seem to lack detail and any sufficient differences but im working on it.

    Enjoy if u please.. :p

    Doc Shock

Nice works here Andy <> interesting subject matter and I can sense good focus <> would love to see you get more variation in your line work <> it should be representing more than outlines <> think about is describing and where it is just containing a form <> the descriptive areas should carry more weight <> you have made great progress.

I promised to post a comment so...
Your conceptual stuff, your anatomy, all coming along nicely. Your colour I really like on your recent wips, but not the latest pic. I'll try to post some comment on it tomorrow, just keep experimenting, I always find sparth and bengal's galleries excellent for inspiration in colour usage.

Sorry for the short comment, I'll crit later.

Thanks for the comments Flip. I totally understand atm about my paintings.. im still realy trying to find my own approach and satisfying style to the paintings. I just cant seem to get like that Painted style or look to it. Like in the last one i find it very sort of smudgy and blury.. and its only the linework that keeps it together.

Looking to do more pieces soon. The final of the little WIP ive been working on.
Just added some colour to the town...
Trying to start a new one soon, work on the colours again.. a street scene this time.

just cos you kept whining, you big crybaby.

Your sketches from anatomybooks and environments/buildings are quite good. But you still need to work hard on drawing from your head, cos the quality drastically changes if you try that. I like the li'l thumbnails you do before a pose. Go study Bridgeman or Loomis or whatever harder, cos the muscles, bones, skeleton everything needs some lovin. It'll be hard, cos your buildings are quite good. Seems you have that great eye for perspectives, but you need to train drawing organic stuff too.

There. Now stop crying for a while.

    RIGHT!

    here it is -

you have great potential from what i have seen in this sketchthread - and just from your first post to your last i see nice progression.

Its good to see you trying out lots of different things - your ship concepts are solid, some nice concepts in there and your landscapes are getting better too.
There are glimmes of anatomy that really work, but some have issues - at the top of this page the arms seem to short on some of the first - but you work shows great progression, so just keep pushing that anatomy.
Look foward to seeing some more stuff from you, I'll check back soon!

    Cheers

    Eri

Thanks alot for the comments guys, Mech Cookie and Eriboss.

A study with no ref, a char, some thumbnails for some enviros, and a big enviro.

Today i found out curtesy of John.O how damn hard elipses are in perspective, i really need some kind of elipses tool thingy or sumit.. So look out for more pratice on elipses and stuff..

Whoa, Old man, your sketches have improved immensly! You are getting your worth outta that book! I rekon you should go for the environs but don't give up the Characters, use them for like doodles or side projects, becuz u have a flair for the landscapes.
Oh btw wen u got a minute check out my thread there sum stuff i need ur advice on but i haven't been able to catch you in the 'outside' world so i have to resort to publising this note. cheers and alll the best on watever u decide to do.
