    Craig Houghton:
    concept: The Shadow-Puppet Bug
It's all about the bug booty. On the colonized planet Erg-6 there's a little native inhabitant that comes out when the sun goes down. It's the Shadow Puppet Bug, and it has a unique way of competing for the attention of the females. A bioluminescent spotlight on it's rear bulb flames up. Then, it uses little prehensile wormlike tendrils atop it's head to pose a little shadow puppet. This particular bloke has a rather decent shadow-puppet projecting of a female in the 'accepting' pose plastered against the wall. Judging by that reddish antennea-tip glow, the adoring female is damned impressed by the cast.

    PHATandy:
    concept: INFERIUS-UMBRA
Meaning ' Under-Shadow ', The IU lives and feeds underground. The Open front mouth sifts soil through the large tube like stomach/intenstine digesting nutrients and the odd animal as food. Although a slow process it is continuous as the IU moves through the soil. Large fangs/teeth at the front end work as diggers to plough through the soil while the side arms/legs move the IU through the soil.
At varying intervals (only at night), the folded in tube on its back, erects to puncter through the soil and lay flat on the surface, held still by the fatty flaps that are pumped out to the side. Smaller tubes pump out the special chemical made inside the main part of the IU, that is shadow. The fine gas chemical coats all objects within a large radius and begins the process. When light from the sun passes onto the chemicals it is made colourless and thus normal colour shows through. With the absense of light, the chemicals dry out to form the blackness that is shadow. This effect is of varying amounts depending on light intensity. After deploying, the shadow, the IU moves on.

    youngpaddy1:
concept: Filled with the fastest substance in the universe the Shadow caster floats above the vast deserts of Capritz Minor on an actinic blue bed of energy generated at it's core. The giga conductive power of the creature manifests outside of its body as the shadowy overspill which darkens the land, if the creatures bodily waste had continued to spread at its original pace the planet would've been enirely black. However after a couple of months previously unseen species of plants are taking advantage of the lowlevel cloud cover and its cooling effect to start growing. As they grow they seem to feed on the black mist and it thins out until barely visible by which time the pllants have seeded and died back to wait for the Shadow Caster's return.

    embee:
concept: Storm-Bird of the Weka Sands
In the deserts of the sand-planet Weka, there exist a lot of strange creatures, the Storm-Bird is just one of them.
These enormous birds' weight caused their lack of flying abilities, so the only way they can move is crawling very slowly. But this doesnt represent a problem for them, because actually they dont have to move a lot... They dont have to hunt - they just wait for their prey: whenever a swarm of bird (birds are the most commen species on Weka) flies along, the Storm-Bird begins to flutter and to stir up dust and sand. This way it darken the sky to take the birds their possibilities to navigate in the air, so the swarm is forced to come down to the ground, where it is an easy meal for the huge storm-bird... The enormous number and dimensions of the swarms on Weka makes it very easy for the storm-bird to survive...
Some of the human tribes living on Weka learned to use the huge birds for their own protection against invaders. Whenever enemies try to enter a village, the villagers escape into their caves (the villages are often built near the strange rock-complexes in the Weka desserts. Only the "chosen" stay with the village-bird and as soon as the invaders are near enough, this group which mainly consists of children begins to attack the bird with lances. This way, they force the bird to unleash a deadly sandstorm, which kills both, the attackers, and of course the suizide-defender-commando too. The tribes' memebers see this kind of death as a guarantee to get into the nirvana...

concept: Shadow Producers reside in old abandoned mines and subteranean caves. They prefer the darkness, where their own bio-luminescence is the only light source. It is through this self illuminating glow that it can summon shadowy beast forms and other illusions. And, it is with these shadowy forms and illusions that it can confuse and confound prey that it is hunting.

concept: At about 12 feet long this shelled creature, the shadow producer, releases a chemical compound that manages to absorb all the parts of the light spectrumwhen its dense, making for an absolute black, to creatures even who see diffrent wave lengths. The compound has a very short half life, and rapidly decays, but the shadow producer can release it under stress conditions, creating the perfect smoke screen to foil potential predators.

    concept: Lactati Umbri
In fond regards Master Fervidious Lackmoore,
Herein you will find a crude illustration of the subject you were inquiring to purchase through a mutual aquaintance. I fear that this vulgar scribbling by my idiot savant son, Regibeld who I am afraid is more idiot than savant does not do the creature justice. Nonetheless, you will be immediately struck I'm sure of the fine quality and august nature of the beast. We here at Killmagrove Estate ensure that each of our Lactati Umbri meet only the highest standards.
As a high connoiseur of these magnificent animals Master Lackmoore, I am sure your eye was undoubtedly drawn to the beautiful fore pustules of the head that are a hallmark of our attentive methods. You will also note that this yearling is in only her second gestation. The near pristine sack that dangles beneath is opened with the utmost care, whereupon the removal of any offspring is conducted then she is stitched up by only the finest hand and the process of fertilization begins again. In the interim she is milked of shadow a mere once a day. You will know and need no reminding that the longer the shadow steeps and matures within the animal the more sumptuous and reliable the product. It will be of note that her fore teats and vestigal stingers are in high demand these days, these of course will be included for no additional charge. I throw open my services and councils to any of your impositions. If ever you are in need of more specimens I have local warehouses in the Belgwine, and Ickmaven districts. If you have need of more than twenty, please contact our mutual friend so that we may negotiate the terms. If you are agreeable to these terms please make our friend aware so that my factor may call upon your factor.
With only the best regards and wishes of success in your dark arts.
    Your ever humble servant,
    Philinius Killmagrove esq.

    possessed:
concept: This large worm-like creature exists on a planet called Cibrey IV. This planet is almost completely devoid of water due to the close proximity of two neighbouring suns. Another thing that makes life so hard on this planet is the absence of hiding places, either for resting or to escape from the sun. the only shadow on this world is found near small rocks and .. near the creatures that create it. The creatures that live here have had to adapt under these circumsizes and few have done so with reasonable success. One of Cibreys greatest creatures is called the Umbra snatcher. It's name is derived from the way it catches it prey. The snatcher travels underground staying very close to the surface until it has reached an area where there are lots of rocks (it senses those since much of the rocks are partially underground) When it has found a suitable place it will surface it's head and about 4/10th of it's body length into the sky. It has the same hue and sometimes (especially elder umbra's) the same texture as the rocks around it. All it has to do now is wait. By creating the largest area of shadow around it, the snatcher attracts prey of reasonable sizes (mostly giant lizards who are just too big to crawl under rocks) and waits till their prey curls up in the shadow underneath them. It waits until the prey is completely at ease and then it snatches them with it's toothy maw(which can stretch to considerable size).
The umbra worm is truely one of natures greatest wonders since it doesn't seem bothered by the burning sun itself. The snatcher has special scales that cover most of it's head and most of it's back. these scales bounce off the harmfull rays of the twin suns.

    Rosco:
    concept: Bestia de la Sombra
As the guardian of the all shadows, La Bestia de la Sombra (Shadow Beast) is one of the most powerful creatures on Earth. Living on the highest mountain top, he watches -- he waits. And when night falls, so begins his nightly duty of gathering his souls -- his shadows. Every night he walks the dark streets and collects the fallen shadows. The ones that no one care to notice anymore. The ones that have no life to follow anymore. Back on his mountain top, he rests and regenerates. For at dawn's break, he releases his shadows back into the world. And with each shadow, a piece of La Bestia de la Sombra dies. Each morning he is weakened as he selflessly gives back to the world -- a world in which no one knows about La Bestia de la Sombra. And when he has spent his last morning releasing his shadows, he will pass on something greater than any shadow that he has ever produced. He will give to the world his son. A son that will carry on gathering souls of his own -- so that the world will always live in shadow.

    concept: Shadow Thief
this medium-sized bird, 20lbs on average, dines not on ordinary organic matter, it tears off pieces of shadow cast by other living things and ingests the soul shred attached to the shadow on the metaphysical plane. While generally more cumbersome than two wings, having four can be useful: on moonless nights, this creature is able to slip sideways into the spirit world to dine on lost souls. The second set of wings provides lift for the heavy solid body in the thinner-than air ether of that plane.
Shown here, the mother bird produces a piece of this zoologist's shadow in reguritated form for her young hatchlings.

    concept: The Banahrian Dhonk
In the Southern Banahrian Desert on planet Bauhk, one can witness a truly unusual and amazing event that occurs once every Alk cycle (once every two Earth years). The desert is very unforgiving here and not too many species can endure the heat that is produced during summer seasons. But a few have adapted in a way, such as the K'dohl, that enables them to cross the desert in the summer and reach their mating grounds by season end. They achieve this by traveling with the only species that are not affected by the heat, which is the Dhonk. The Dhonk's long feathery "skirt" acts as an umbrella to block the harmful Alk rays and cool the desert ground enough for the K'dohl to walk across. If the K'dohl were to attempt this otherwise they would quickly dehydrate within minutes and perish.

    BrainBug:
    concept: Phoenix of shadows
This little creature, the "phoenix of shadows" is all around us, flying just above the surface of every solid object. The thing that makes it so special is that it can only survive when hit by a strong enough lightsource. This light energy will also make it transparant, that's wy we never notice it.
If the phoenix is hit by indirect lightning, it dies and "melts" into a gray/black transparant substance. This very light substance (it's just a bit denser then air) drops due to gravity but is also attracted by almost everything because of the big weightdifference (basic way gravity works in case you didn't know).
This way, almost every spot not hit by a direct light will be covered and look a bit darker then the surrounding area. A phenomenon we humans call "shadow". When direct light hits the substance again, it vaporizes and clears up again, the "shadow" dissapears.
During nighttime or on moments and places when the phoenix' vaporised body isn't getting any light energy at all, it will rise again from it's "ashes", just like the legendary bird that gave his name to the object under discussion. Nighttime is also the only time you can photograph them, using a high speed camera you can make a picture of them. But you will also kill all the surrounding ones because of the flash and the indirect light on certain places that is connected to it.
TRIVIA: When looking at a lightsource, some phoenixes will be between you and the source, difusing the light you see and because of their transparancy, like if you watch the glittering of a diamond. The word generaly used for this phenomenon is: "lensflare".

    shadoman:
    concept: Blindness Beetle
The Opticus Voraxelus, or Blindness Beetle, is typically found in the plains of Iowa's cattle pastures. They can infect any human body that work on these ranches. The eggs are transmitted by a fully-mature and winged adult that flicks its young into the ear canal of the human as it swoops down. Once the eggs are in place they hatch. The larvae worm their way through the outer ear canal, into the head of the unsuspecting host, and finally resting in the regions behind the eye socket where it attaches itself to the optic nerve. It will feed on the optic nerve for months until it is a fully grown pupae.
As the creature feeds, it literally drains the eyesight from the infected host. It does this by permanently damaging the optic nerve and rendering it a network of impairable, dead nerve cells with its hundreds of small, razor-sharp teethlets inside its spongy mouth parts. The teethlets have a numbing venom that is transmitted through to the optic nerve of the host, as to not arouse suspicion.
The Blindness Beetle is nearly extinct due to the difficult process it must undergo to become a fully grown imago. It must squeeze itself out through the easiest passage, which is usually the nasal cavity. If it manages the tough descent down the duct inside the nose, it is usually discarded by a good sneeze or an ordinary clump of wet snot. Once outside the host, it cocoons into its final stage of life, where it will grow its wings and follow their destiny, and therefore reproduce to cast more eternal shadows upon its helpless victims.

You cannot see them, they are too small. The light that put out from their bodies, coludn't be seen by human eyes. It can imitate the shape what it wants and make the shadow. Ithink one of them lives in my room. A shadow of a woman came in sight on my wall and disappeared. I looked for it but I couldn't find. Their being harmless calms me down.

This tortured creature's sole purpose is to form shadows from the light its body produces. The method by which they produce shadows is reminicent to that of playing with dough.

    MIKECORRIERO:
    concept: SHADOWLESS
A life form now known only as the shadowless have been watching us for quite some time now, recording our every move, step, thought..
The Shadowless are the producers of all shadows- these dark replicas of all matter, life forms, objects watching over us, mimicing our movements. Have you ever felt like you saw a shadowy form walking in the night? yea..thats right.. a highly evolved technological monitoring device known as SOP (Shadow Observer Probe) created by the shadowless to fool us. The SOP is capable of moving independantly and when the Shadowless are interested in further observing a subject, the SOP will grab its victim and return to the Shadow Producers.
The name Shadowless is derived from the fact that, these life forms would be shadowless due to the fact that shadows only exist on a life form being observed, or hidden in areas of observation such as trees, and all other inanimate objects.

Shadoman, Mikecorriero, and Fozzybar have entered in my strait circle. Because of idea. Lot of people have made black smoke producing creature, and these three are enter deeper in concept.
I vote for Fozzy because his concept make me laugh (as allways), and because he is mod and when I do something stupid he will not kick me

    Thanks Embee

    --------

Here's a round of c&c I typed up yesterday while at work

Phuzion - Damn, I love the way you sketch/draw, and that toned paper is very flattering as well. Where's the colored version, it'd be fantastic I'm sure.

PHATandy - Glad to see you continuing with the cow. I like that you tried to have one image say it all, with the creature presented from a nice perspective and with a useful diagram in the corner. Great work. Also, I find the white edge around the sides of the creature to be distracting.

End Hits - You should provide a more detailed description. There's more questions raised by that description than there are answers.

young paddy1 - If it's floats across the surface, what are the legs for? I like the splatter texture on the spray, but the wispy squiggles confuse things. Also, what is creating that dark region on the creatures back/shoulder?

Embee - That's a very interesting concept. In choosing a way to present it, I'd have liked to see more of the darkness created from the cloud and perhaps the creature in-action preying upon the grounded birds.

nightfend - High-five for going with a concept that is literally shadow-producing. It's hard to make that work, so well done. I'd have liked to see more colors incorporated into this, but I realize a single source light underground would probably mean a narrow range like that.

red rook - I love the way this is painted. It looks quite a bit like a ship/spacecraft to me. It was a bit difficult to tell if this was under water or in the air, but I eventually noticed the subtle fish in the upper corner.

teyekanik - I like the mythical creature approach. The textures and splatters look unique, but they didn't seem to gel together for me. Also, anatomy-wise, I realize cats have that extended clavicle look that can appear like an extra limb bone, but in this position they read more like back legs to me.

helzon - I couldn't be happier with the literary approach for the descrip. It's a great way to highlight a really beautiful image. If anything, I'd recommended leaning less on outline. It still works though.

possessed - Hey, that things kinda cute actually. I like the idea of a shadow-lure -- good job on the concept. I didn't like the mixing of the line art with the soft aibrushy look in the rendering though.

Rosco - "...collects the fallen shadows. The ones that no one care to notice anymore." Rosco, your description is beautiful. I love it. I just wish the lines in the pic were a bit more fluid. Sketchy is fine, but some look scratchy.

bwkeough - I love the painterly style. Nice touch with the 'zoologist' shadow. The extra wings and eyes don't look aerodynamically useful to me and actually distract.

Eshara - I like the blocky light glow around the head. What's the creatures motivation for creating the shadows, and if it's visible a mile away, does this mean it's something we can all see or is it still the secret reason for shadows etc.

leckronium - Another neat and clean illustration that grabs my attention -- great work. The bony stuff up top looks like it'd be heavy for that guy, and I'd rather see something similar up there but lighter-looking. A bit more individuality on the little K'dohl.

BrainBug - I like the from-the-ashes aspect. The monochromatic rendering and the way the eye looks pasted on really threw me off.

Shadoman - Neat concept, beautiful illustration. Darkness producer seems a bit more on-target though. Of course, you more than make up for that with the quality of the illustration.

mert yavasca - I prefer it when the mechanism for creating the shadow is more developed. Also, the blocky colors look neat, but it's really difficult to make out the creature.

BlkCelebration - from an abstract point of view, it's really striking. I'm confused about the purpose of the shadows it produces.

redehlert - The image itself really, really impressed me. I like this style quite a bit, and that thing is just plain cute. However, I didn't get how this is a shadow producer other than the fact that it's called a shadow cap and therefore gives birth the more shadow caps. Well, that, and the fact that it casts a shadow. But those things would apply to anything called a Shadow-<blank>. Really though, it's beautiful.

Fozzybar - The red burst and the drip are dramatic, but the that upper image is just confusing. It looks like he slicing up a cloud. Also, scientists may not understand how he makes the shadow, but I'd certainly like to. The bug itself though, is damned handsome.

Mike C. - Nice work in branching out stylistically. The border on the image is also very flattering and helps make it look all ...pro and stuff. I really wanted to find something wrong with this, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.

Now, as far as the voting goes.. .. great work Mike C. It's attention getting, I like the concept, and it's really a memorable image.

    Thanks again,
    Craig

BlkCelebration got my vote. I love the use of colours in that image. Right on. Teyekanik came very close though, the muted tones and sense of scale are cool.

I voted for Fozzybar. The concept is very crazy and original, and the image looks very good. The only crit is that the small image with the falcon's shadow is more explanatory than the bigger image, with the bug chainsawing the floor. Maybe it could have been the other way around, the chainsawing thing as a little image and the falcon's shadow image bigger, since that is more what the concept is about.

The entry that came in really close second was redhelerts.

Reading shadoman's concept made my eyes hurt.

Voted for Fozzy too, liked the concept a lot and the pic just looks nice.
Not much to add. It got my attention immediatly when i saw it.

Red Rook would have been my secondplacewinner. I love the pic, love the concept, but the element with "he uses it when he's scared" reminded me a bit too much of a squid. I think I would have voted for that, if he would have used it in other situations. But it must be said, the pic looks really beautifull!

mike got my vote again.rendering is just too sweet.
redehlert, shadoman and red_rook were also quite high on my list but the final "oomph" was missing.

I voted for Shadoman. I really liked his render as well as his idea of a blinding parasite (although I don't understand why it likes to eat optic nerves...).

no time at the moment to comment on all of the entries, I'll try to get that done on my lunch break.

    woo \o/

thnx for the crits guys and teh votes
ofcourse mike and shadoman are at the top of my list and i also really like fozzy's it looks shiny n pockmarked. Mike maybe a lil less blurring, an some more interesting silloughets they kinda look like little fat kids with glowy eyes, the main creature fuckin rocks though

Ill try and comment on everyone else later.

i shoulda come up with a more interesting concept, like have the creature use the shadow for some feeding habit or somthing.

I voted for MikeC - concept, concept copy, colors and textures were all very pleasing to come back to time and time again. Nice job, Mike. I'd enjoy a breakdown of how you worked this one up.
Tey, FozB - I enjoyed both of your pieces for the solidity of form and concept copy - truly felt believable to me. And Foz, mint job on the bug's reflective/lustrous feel and it's violet shadow. Mint.
Helzon - your copy gets my vote, but that's just verbal, of course - totally original presentation - I agree with droppin' the outline in the future.
RedR- I dig your concept as well but it reminded me of a giant lobster piece I saw either here or on CGtalk, I can't remember exactly (pre-coffee mind blank).
I'll see about other crits later on today.

Craig - Thanks for the crit, man. I appreciate that. My concept was a stretch to get the 'shadow' bit across but thought I'd give it a go at any rate.

    Cheers!

Guys (and Gals?), thanks for all of your appreciation. With such nice pieces, I didn't feel like I would even match up. I will vote and critique later tonight. I am too sick and at work to do so now.

I voted for redehlert, I like the composition and background, and the muted color theme. It has the sense of shadow in it.

I voted for Mike C. I really enjoyed the concepts originality. I'm not particularly fond of the flanking characters/creatures, but the core creature looks great.

I am going with my top three:

    3. Fozzybar - I loved the rendering and layout of the bug. The quick slashes and striking red splatters really drew me in. The overall concept was good and believable.
    2. RedRook - I was really torn on this one, because I found it to be outstanding. I loved the concept and the rendering. It felt like an ancient whale with armor.

    But, my vote went to...

    1. MikeCorriero - I felt that his concept had so much originality. I loved what he had done in the 2 initial sketches. But it was really cool to get an entirely different style out of him with his final piece. Even though it was a little flat, it really worked overall to illustrate the concept.

Sorry for the sketchy entry but I passed 10 days without pc due to hardware problems. (i didn't expect that Fozzy would take it to the poll)
