    WIP Sky Captain

"A groan of tedium escapes me startling the fearful..."-Tool

This is my third or forth sculpture, I really can't remember now. but i'm still rapidly learning how to sculpt/human anatomy/ blah blah blah. It's all kind of piling on top of me and my head is caving in...it rocks!

got my first block of Castilene way back in February...I started this about a week after I got it...I think that means I've been sculpting for over two months.(with about two or three weeks of breaks to paint and draw for mulah) It feels fruitless at times, but I think we've all felt that with our art.

a little background on the project: This was originally going to be a bust of Sky Captain and Polly Perkins from the film "Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow", in an embrace like you might see on the posters from old adventure films. I decided just recently that I need to get things moving faster though, so I'll be ditching that idea.the piece is in 1/4th scale, so it's a big mutha'.

I need your help though. Desperately. I could use your trained and talented eyes to help me with all the things that are off. I'm only concerned right now with the head and the likeness to Jude Law. the body, is nearly completely undeveloped, so don't worry about that.

So, if you'd take a little free time to help me out, I'd appreciate it.

    thanks!
    Trev

I recognized him immediately! I think it looks great!
    Nothing really wrong here IMO...

thanks Laszlo. I'm getting a similar reaction from others...I guess it could be that I've just been staring at it too long. I can see as I take a look at the pictures today that the profile really photographed bad...But I'm going to take another look at touching up the nose.

thanks again. any help at all is really appreciated!!

I agree, it's a great likeness! But that doesn't help you with anything except your ego ...so I will give you my critique as well.
The main thing that sticks out as wrong is his forehead, it is very square, I think it needs to be rounded off a little by the corner of his eyebrows. the indentation on his chin might need to be a little bit bigger? not sure on this.

Anyway, looks great! keep it up.

Trev...I think it looks great! I can't see anything that really can be improved upon likeness-wise...just really awesomely done man. Makes me want to try my hand at a likeness in castilene. I'm impressed!

Thanks scott. It's getting there, and I'm feeling more confident that I can get sculpts done quicker after this. likenesses aren't any walk in the park though, as I might have first thought.

May I also say, your Kong piece is looking more and more outstanding each time I see it! I love keeping up with it. I couldn't believe it when I read it had broken into pieces...that's what I call a test of patience.

    thanks agian

    i love it!

This has such a great likeness to Jude Law, it's quite amazing.

It's really eye-catching! I love the pose , it's kind of subtle but that makes it seem so much more human.

Do you have any of your other sulptures posted? i'd like to see more of your work!

Cool. Makes me think someone should cast Jude Law as Lindberg.

robin-eleven- thanks! I haven't really got much else to show. I don't like my other work, but I understand that some people might enjoy them. you can find all my other sculptures on my deviantart gallery found here My Gallery

I've had to take a break from the sky captain. I was invited to join in on the stressful fun that is the ProAm Sculpting tournament over at the sculptor's corner...it's an opportunity I couldn't pass up! I'll get back to the captain in the next month.

    thanks

minky-with castilene, you can carve and get fine details. this gun is nowhere near done, but I simply roughed it out and then used an exacto blade to shave layera down and get things looking decent. the hardest thing is the bullet cartridge...but it was done similarly.

jdgill-It's really a bit too big for a bust. I think it comes in at about 8 inches tall. I still think I should make a full figure out of him.

once i get back to work on it, I'll post pictures. I want to see how fast a likeness can be done, since this took me forever. I'm doing a 1/6th scale angelina jolie from the sky captain film right now...about a day in.

    thanks!

    Hey Trev,

amazing sculpture man. I can totaly simpathize with, what you were saying about after working on a sculpture too long, no matter how good the likeness is, you always see the inperfections. Right now I can tell when that moment is coming, where I am just fixing the same spots over & over again, with no good result. What I find it to just put the project a side for a little while, start a new project & in a few weeks, come back to it with fresh eyes. especially when your working on something for a few months. but anyways amazing peice.

p.s. I really enjoyed your pastell(?) of The Last Crusade, with Indiana & his father in front of the fireplace. I am a huge Indiana Jones fan & have been since I was a lil kid.
