    music or no music?

    was just wondering

EDIT: oh sorry I messed up -- wasn't able to put up the poll. Hmm I can't seem to add the poll by editing. So I guess I'll just ask -- do you guys listen to music while working (on art)? 1)all the time 2)never 3)almost all the time 4)rarely

Rarely. Music tends to influence my mood, and since I have the habit of listening to random music, I'll get into random mood, and end up messing up the mood for painting. Not to mention it lags my computer when I do digital paintings.

I usually try to listen to music when I am laying out the groundwork for a painting or drawing that compliments the feel I am going for but once I get working I have to turn it off otherwise it distracts me. Also, I will never listen to music when I am working on my animations because it will screw up my timing.

I listen to Led Zeppelin III on a loop while doing concept ork for my webcomic, all the time, every time, and for other stuff I just listen to whatever I have on my list in ITunes, being mostly Yoko Kanno Bebop and G in the S stuff.

The music is my inspiration. The emotions from the music often flow into my work, reflecting the it's mood.

Music doesn't distract me from painting (I find it distracts me from reading/writing, however, which is odd), but I don't think it has a lot of effect on my art ... after a few minutes into the painting it just becomes background noise ... sometimes I don't even realize the music has stopped ... oh well.

Always music when I paint.. can't do it without it.

I think Painter should come with MP3 software.. and when you create a new image you should be able to make a playlist of appropriate music that's saved in the image file...

I find it hard to work without music. It doesn't matter what kind, it really doesn't affect my mood at all, I just need the background noise. Silence feels so oppressive to creativity. If I'm not in the mood for music, I'll play random video files in the background or turn on anything that makes noise (but preferably not an actual movie because that'll just distract me).

I work more concentrated when the music is off, so i'll try to finish listening before is start drawing. Unfortunately i bought a major kick ess new album and can't concentrate on anything anymore. Blood Brothers are really bad for me. They screw me up! In my head!

working without music is like working without additional but vital inspiration.

    impossible.

however there are many sorts of music that i will not listen while painting. i eradicate any tracks containing vocals. in other words, the music must be opened to personal visuals and atmospheres.

ambient, movie scores, experimental composers, are my favorites.

Can't draw without it. I get distracted VERY easily and music helps me to focus, 'specially symphonic or ambient stuff.

when i'm at home i listen most of the time.helps me get in a good mood.and prevents me from repeating stupid songs from the radio in my head. sometimes it also sets my mood.when not at home i don't listen to music, but have enough background noises(birds) to feel comfortable.if nothing's on i feel kinda lonely.

about 75% of the time with. However, there are strange occaisions that I work without, but usually have the window open so I can hear natural sounds and such - I live in the woods, so it's not like I'm listening to car alarms or people shooting each other or traffic or something

When I'm drawing, I can't listen to music thats distracting. It has to be music without words, or if words are used, then the vocals have to sound like an instrument that blends with the rest of the song.

Yeah, when painting, almost always. I like to stick to fairly high energy stuff...infact if I'm at an easel I like to stand and dance alittle bit (I was a raver once upon a time) while I paint. I find its just one more thing that helps me slip into a more "flowing" non-critical state.

    Always, well whenever possible anyway.

My stereo died the other month and not being able to play cds did my nut in, if the radio had gone too I'd have cracked..

I do have the pc obviously but I have a rubbish soundcard / speakers.

In my case, all the drawing I do during the day is around loud people, buildings, so on, so I just need music when I draw back at home. It's just a connection I have between the two and it won't go away.. anytime soon.
