What's up Shane! This book cover painting is kicking ass! - (Do you know what I'm kicking?.....ass!) It is one of your best pieces I have seen to date! I love the simplicity of it, yet there is a sense of wonder when I look at it. If this was on a book, it would jump out at me and say - "Buy me! I'm a good read!"

I have been *ridiculously* busy with school work and I almost want to give up on my animation class - the one I need! I learned with Cinema 4D (what the school had at the time) and now they switched to 3DStudio Max, which I have to teach myself, but all my animation skills should transfer over - just takes time to get through this *learning curve*!!! Still, it is the most common program used in the gaming industry (of which I want to work in), and the other software I want to learn is Maya - regarded as the best out there, but is maninly used in the film industry. I just can't afford my own copy right now.

The good news is that my "spare" time is devoted to Painter, of which Todd recommended to use always! I should post next chance I get.

SMALL REMINDER: CHOW STARTS TOMORROW. I EXPECT YOU ALL TO PARTICIPATE!
    ---
    scumgrinder got it, thanks!

sve wow... I'm almost speachless - your so sweet "Space Rooster" had me rolling though - I love that! An update is below, and I think I got your concerns - please let me know!

Odds I think I addressed it. I donno - they look fine to me...

neoknocker actually... the battle scene isn't done yet - I just needed to set it aside for a few. The next edit to it *will* be the final, though.

    ivy'sgrandkid Thanks!

Gloominati Thanks man. I've got an edit to the pic below.

solorpower Juan! Hey, do you know I've got some ancient artwork of yours here? From when you were in Korea and we were doing that comic! We've been playing with this stuff TOO LONG. Let's get our shit together and do something with ourselves, okay? Is that a plan?
Learning that new program sounds like it sucks - I'm sorry you've got to go through with that. That's why I bailed from web design - had to relearn everythign every six months or so. I just want to focus in on one thing and own it, you know? Looking forward to your next update - AND ALWAYS LISTEN TO TODD!
    ----
    Okay, update:

And just for gits and shiggles: (hey, you gotta think big )

    Cheers,
    ~Shane

Hey, Oregano, you got me here. very hard to tell, but I'll try.

I hope you still have the first picture because I wouldn't let this bright glowing planet go without a fight. It is calling, inviting, you know.

And I did like the space more in first picture, it had more personality, if you don't think I'm nuts talking like this.

The figures are much better in the second painting, you changed the pose, add a lot of details and textures, I can't stand against this , my poor heart . Girl's face is still the lightist spot and stealing the attention, but you probably wanted it like this.

So that what I think, don't take it too seriously though. You are the creator, I'm just sitting in the audience.

I have to say, I am not thrilled with the typeface you have on that book cover. The color doesn't sit with me either. The type looks too wood-carved and not really enough sci-fi. Might also want to check the color and hierarchy. The image is really nice, but that type just doesn't to it for me. Keep up the work!

    Hi Shane,

First of all, I really think you did a terrific job on that last piece. it reminds me of Michael Whelan, good job.

But since you wanted some crits I'm going to put on my nitpicky-hat and see if I can find something worth mentioning
    - The bridge of her nose appears to be going straight into her forehead without a curve.
    - Her left eye appears to be looking a bit more upwards than her right eye
    - The creatures hand is almost the same in value and hue as the girls arm which makes it hard to read at first glimpse.
-Her arm is casting a hard shadow onto her body but the creatures arm/hand hardly is casting a shadow.

Again, this is being really really nitpicky but a for a no 1 bookcover is it normal to be examined up close

Keep it up, and great work on the battlescene too.

I think in that first sketch, the girl's right arm is too far up. I think that whole arm should come down a bit cuz the shoulder's placed too high. I also think that the foreshortened hand coming towards us is too small. Other than that, I like your work. Especially the hooded due at the bottom left of the second pic, and the pose/gesture of the chick standing up. Great work.

sve I agree with you regarding the planet - I thought hard about toning it down and really didn't want to for the same reasons that you indicate. However, I felt that in the final analysis it was competing with the girl, which as you noted, I wanted to be the focal. I also needed to "push" the space back as well so it wasn't competing either.

masterpug Thanks for the crits on the typeface - it wasn't meant to be taken seriously - I did that to play around and spoof myself more than anything else.

    scumgrinder Thanks

    Jason Snair Thanks!

van an "it's pretty" is worth it's weight in gold from you man

dakoscwash It's good to know that my work has the power of resurrection! How are you? A little stiff? Rigo wears off after a while

buzzz3d Thanks man. I'll ad those crits to the list I want to go through this next week and put the final polish on a couple of pieces (battle scene included) and just *be done* with them. Bah.

Gauge thanks for the crits - I agree. The first post has some serious problems, but aside from that, it just didn't convey what I was after. I'm looking for something a little more... elusive with the character.

    Thanks all,
    ~Oreg.

I like your sketches a lot. I'm also looking foward to the final battle piece. It looks promising.
The pose of the girl for the chow entry looks cool and dynamic and is yet strange.
If I try to imagine the whole move the girl does, I end up with something strange. Her hair and her arm suggest that she is turning around, but at the same time, her head looks like she is turning the other way around. Also the legs don't fit to the move of the rest of the body.

But since you won't use it anyway, this crit might be unnecessary.

Hey! nice sketches..ChOW, thanks for organising it. I am so excited.. hehe. as for ur first sketch, I think her head is a bit too big.. nice sense or motion though. I rather like the centre sketch from your second post, she does look emotionally detached, works for me. can't wait to see what you pull out, well and everyone else pretty much. cheers!

Daayam! I really enjoy this finished piece; cool to see the progress from stage to stage. One thing though, the guy in the left/middle of the piece that's 'flying' above the crowd seems to be a little oddly shaped. The perspective going back to his feet seems to be too straight, but maybe it's just me. Either way, very nice!

that is pretty impressive piece. how long did it take you? I do agree about the guy flying throught the air and his perspective being off. Also I would "grey out" from maybe the torso down so it looks like hes going through space.

I agree with the above crits, and I'd also have his limbs flailing just a bit instead of being so "stuck" to his body. I understand he's going through the air, but if he were soaring so fast that his limbs clung like that, then his head would be whipped back a lot more. Overall this is a great pic and you captured the gesture/expression of the scared guy very well.
