Textures is always something that have bothered me in Painter, any textury brushes out there?
    Which brushes do YOU use?

Okay, attached is a layout of how I work, with some explanation - it includes all the brushes I use - I tend to be pretty much an out of the box kind of painter - I don't do a lot (or any) custom brushes. I am going to be posting another small smoke/cloud tut a little later today, so that will work in conjunction with this.

As for textures, since you asked, I'm not too fond of the texture options in Painter, though I am sure you'd be able to find someone that is. I tend to be a bit old school in that I actually paint in textures. I haven't been able to bring myself to really use overlays unless I'm doing some sort of graphic design piece. So, any textures you see in my work are actually painted in.

To do that, I rely on the Digital Water Color Brushes, - Broad Water Color and the salt brushes specifically. Once I dry a layer (ctl+shift+L or Layers > Dry Digital Water Color from the tool bar across the top.

    Hope this helps!

    Ciao,
    ~Oreg.

Haha love that last one...Distortion, 'cheap boob jobs'!

Thanks for posting that, I'm still trying to get to grips with Painter myself, trying to make the transfer over from Photoshop. I tend to steer towards oils and watercolours myself, and some pencils.

I like the snowy dino style character you've drawn in post #577, he's great!

    smoke: a how to.

I was asked to provide a small tutorial on how I did the smoke for my genie for CHOW (below), so I pulled this together:

It's pretty straight forward. I used five brushes to do this:
The broad Water Color brush (# 1 in my painter layout above)
The Pure Water Brush (# 5)
The Tinting basic round (# 11)
    The Grainy Blender (# 8 )
and the FX Glow Brush to ad the red glow in (#6)

    The basic process was this:
Outline where the body of the smoke (or cloud, or wisp, or fog, etc.) goes.
Lay in some basic colour with the the Tinting Basic Round, blend that in with the Grainy Blender till I'm satisfied with it.

From there I ad in a couple of other highlights here and there with the Tinting Round, blending those in as I go along. Once I have a basic body, or form of the cloud in place, I start working with the Broad Water Colour Brush. Keep in mind that I work on ONE LAYER, so if you're working on more than one in Painter, the DIGITAL WATER COLOURS* will not work properly.

I block in colour, blend it out with the Pure Water brush, dry the layer (CTRL+Shift+L or Layers>Dry Digital Water Colour Layer), and then continue. At this point, it's just a series of repeated processes - laying in colour, blending it until it looks the way I want.

Using the fx brush, I add in brighter colour areas - in this case red showing through the smoke - on the genie, it was the brighter green areas around her head, and the occasional spark here and there.

Eventually, I added in the white outline, as I did on the genie's pic, which was orange instead. And, I'm noticing that I could have cleaned that up some

Anyway, that's about it. If you've any questions, feel free to pm me.

*There are also Water Colours, which are NOT what I use. Make sure you've found the Digital Water Colours, which are listed under "D"

Heya Yes, Painter X is the newest edition. (the "X" standing for 10, "IX" being 9 - Roman numerals and all )
    ----

anyway, some sketches. Nothing very good or earth shattering, but there you have it.

Hope you don't mind opinions from the unwashed beginner type, but I noticed that the oil portrait's eyes are off and either the right eye needs to be a little bit higher (her right) or the left, a touch lower. I'm going by the insides of her eyes to judge and it's just the first thing to strike me. It's a beautiful painting otherwise--the background complements her very well.
