The sketches? No. Those are pencil from imagination. No ref.

Hey sir, these last posts are really nice. I really like where this last one is going. Just sketching or working up ideas for paintings?

Please stop by my new Anatomy Sketchbook and critique the hell out of it.

Awesome, awesome updates. You know you like oils now but fantasy art is where I feel your personality the most, Shane. I just feel the presence of a boy in you when you paint or draw your characters or scenes. So much of your own there, dreams and curiosity and desire to be astronaut too probably. Because I'm not the one who would like to fly, but your images make me want to put on the space suit and step into the cabin.
Really. It is that sincere and enthusiastic and attractive. There is no fear in your fantasy paintings, or at least it is weaker than feeling of an exciting adventure, desire to see new worlds. I bet you like travels and you are open minded to other cultures. It is just so much curiosity in your art.

This creature in the first painting, it might be that you wanted to depict him as evil, or vicious, but really I just want to hug it and say Calm down, you are with friends now. It looks agitated, but I feel sympathy to it. Maybe delightful colors do that to me, or attractive planets on the BG.
I have no fear, but push of energy from that image, I know you wanted some other effect probably. Maybe being evil is not your nature .

The drawing arr beautiful, lines are elegant, effortless and last draswing has the same impulse of energy for me. I'm starting to put on my space suit, turn on the ignition, we are flying to another planet now! .

No no, my bad, I meant your still lifes, or a still life. I thought you showed a picture of you working from your monitor in another post. I was just curious if your doing the other still life paintings that way as well. Now I'm not so sure anymore. Again nice painting, and nice sketches. Thanks again for trying to help me the other day. Keep up the good work.

    Justin Oaksford Thanks!

crazy3dman Hey "Sir" yerself Um, yes to both questions

sve thank you. I'm glad you have that response, because that is what I want the viewer to have!

And no, being evil is not in my nature. Just give me coffee and no one gets hurt!

Bojee ah, sorry I misunderstood. I am working from photos with the still lifes right now mainly because I don't have the time (and I'm not fast enough) to sit down and paint an entire piece in one sitting. I've a new still life that I haven't posted yet that I've been working on on and off for the past two weeks. Keeping the lighting consistant (especially when using natural lighting) and flowers fresh is simply impossible with my current work schedule. though I'd love to be.

Anyway, here's one of the above sketches that I started coloring for fun last night (really, just playing around):

    Cheers all
    ~Shane

    "Bad-Guy"

Shot this with my digicamera (scanner is flunking out on me) and worked it up some in painter.

Still noodling on it, but I'm done for the evening...

Anywho... nice updates as always! Especially like where the badguy is heading. Predator inspired that one?

Thanks! that Shiva critter is an alien design for my "girl in space" project Uziel mentioned. Big ol' aboreal cephlopod type critter. Been around a while... Sorry, starting to nerd out

Ouch! You're making my brain hurt with this one!! I think I know what you're trying to say, but I'm not sure!

UzielHey Bro, long time no see - thanks for the comments! Girl in space is a long slow project, but it's coming along.

dCepTPredator inspired... um, no. I actually just sort of whipped that guy out after a couple of hours work last night. I can see what you're referring to, though. Although the Predator has an a different jaw structure, sort of crab/insect mandibles...

    Cheers all,
    ~Shane

Hot stuff, Shane. Love the Malfador cover, though I wish the darkness of the mouth carried over to the shadows in the hood a little. It's just a step down in the value scale, but it's enough that the mouth is clearly the darkest value. It's a tad jarring.

I love all the pencil stuff, especially the Murrundahl. The girl in the alien landscape is coming along really well. I think it will be a great portfolio piece when finished... Is "Bad Guy" Colored traditionally and then brought into Painter, or is it pencils and then Painter? It's still got a lot of the fuzziness of the digi-photo right now, so I assume that's the camera and not an intentional effect in painter. It's looking great, and I know you've said you've got some more to do on it. Don't forget to give us more of an indicator of an elbow on the closer arm. The end of his ulna should be visible behind that gauntlet. Also, check the proportions on the two arms. The closer arm seems to have a shorter upper arm and longer lower arm than the one further from the viewer.

Still... I'm loving it. (cue Mickey-D's logo)

bdfoster Hey bro - thanks for the crits. Good eyes

Here's a another small update before I bail for work (at a freakin' bank of all places... ) I hit it with a quick sharpen in photoshop so I hope that gets rid of some of the fuzziness and doesn't look too hackish.

    Anyway, gotta go.
    Cheers,
    ~S

[edit] oh, and it was done in pencil colored in painter. late.

Sharpen definitely helped. I'm loving where it's going, despite my earlier crits.

You're not the only one working at a bank, bro. I'm slaving away to the corporate financial machine myself.

    9-16-06 - "Good-Guy" (Archer)

This is the companion piece to the "Bad-Guy". Should have some color slapped on this by tonight.... Anyhow, just pencil from my sketchbook. Got my scanner functional again (yay! )

Incidently, both of these pieces are being pitched for a job. No NDA, so I can share the art and the process without remorse.

Will reply later. The Anehiem peppers are burning....

    Cheers,
    ~Shane

Bad Guy makes my heart sing with delight. Not because it's better than your other stuff, but that you've stepped outside yourself to do it. This is different and different opens new doors and makes non-different better in the process.

    I... am... stoked...

Yeah, totally agree, the bad Guy is very tastefully done and exciting. I like him on all stages, kind of like him less saturated even more. I'm a follower nature colors in art . Kind of think we need to look closer at how it happens in nature, the shades and combination of colors. It has the ultimate taste in my opinion. So less saturated colors look pleasant to me.

But anyways this painting is very tasteful, textures, variety of shapes, smoothness and roughness both present in image, unusual pose and this intriguing position of the head is very, very interesting to look at, keep my attention for long.. Plus I like the color palette you chose.
Right now it has a very nice balance in my opinion. Lots of details and textures on the top of the page and kind of blurred, diluted, more relaxed bottom of the page. I would say it is better this way, not too overloaded with information. Plus I really like how mysterious and not totally readable the pose of the guy is. It is provoking.
But he is sure bad guy, his personality is not open, he can do a number on you unexpectedly.

The archer girl look a bit cartoonish I think, because her hands, arms are very much stylized, simplified, I think. and because colors are not that sophisticated as in a bad boy. I like her face, although rarer expression of her face would add more to this image. Now it is a bit generic.
Really like the WIP with girl climbing with efforts right near the frame of the picture. Very unusual, fresh.

Dogfood, Kalango & Sve - thanks so much. Here's the final on the archer. Don't have time for in depth replies as I've got to get out the door to work (again...), but I wanted to post this for you guys. I agree, she's a little more cartoonish than I would have liked, but I didn't have time to get that nitty-gritty realism I wanted.
