    Shane--

I really dig the composition and movement in the new piece. The lighting on the figures is a little strange for a night scene-- A little too warm and ambient. I assume it should be a streetlight as your main light source, but that should be a little more high contrast and more direct (her back really reads as "overhead street light", but her left arm, our right, almost looks like it's lit by another light source off frame to our right, as does her face...)

Oh, Man... the composition just makes this sing! All the angles give it a dynamic, controlled chaos, which just syncs so well with monkeys in general, and the mischivous look in general on this one.

    Supurb, my brother!

As a minor crit, the subtle value shifts on her t-shirt seem a little too smudgy and random, making it feel a tad too dirty, and the bright red bike parts are a little out of place.

    Just the sketch

You'll have to go to the finished section to see the painting (or the CHOW)

This is actually for a personal project I'm working on, not the CHOW, but it dovetailed nicely with this week's topic.

    Here's the finished thread.

    Cheers,
    ~Oreg.

Here's the painting for the above sketch, which is also posted in the FF section:

and here's the character in the space suit. (She's supposed to be speaking to someone 'off screen'). This one will be posted in the FF section shortly. She's supposed to be between 11-13.

and here's the sketch for the one above:

Just a thought Shane...I was thinking about some of the crits over on your portfolio review, and the one in particular that has my attention at the moment is a crit on faces. It's definitely not a fair generalization to make about your work, but I do agree that there are some inconsistencies in your faces, and I think there are some great examples in your recent sketches. For instance, on Jan 12 you posted 3 female faces...fucking great. A month earlier, on Dec 17th, a man holding a sword...also a great face. However December 15th shows the best example of the inconsistency I'm trying to point out. These are doodles of course, but still the face of the man holding a sword directly underneath a sketch of a dragon head...it's just fantastically well done, and the dude to the left on the same sketch couldn't provide a better contrast...classic instance of an oregano-face that just has a little something funky with it. The faces in the sketch directly above that one on Dec15th are similarly not up to par with the one in the lower right corner. Smaller eyes? More subtle nostrils? Just better perspective? I really can't place my finger on what I'm responding to...I just thought that by pointing this out, perhaps you could pin-point a difference in the way you worked on each sketch. As I said it's not a general problem, just an inconsistency, and really only worth noting because your portfolio review thread got my gears turning. Looking forward to seeing some new work in here too!

Oreg, you're getting better and better, mate. I have to agree about the faces crit tho. Sometimes they just don't have the life that others do. It's hit and miss and more times miss than hit. Like the last update, the girl on the right hand side is awesome. I really like her and then the left she's wonky and bit in the face. You do so much work. I have no idea how you have a social life! lol I can't find time to do nearly any good work outside of school and the slavin' job. Errr.... keep up the momentum man. You goin' to Montreal?

    Shane--

I was just thinking of you last night and here you are with an update! (I was out doing gorcery shopping, and my wife had put Oregano on the list. Of course, she capitalized it, so there was no way I could think of the spice (not that I would have anyway). "She wants me to buy Shane?" ... ...CA has infected my mind.....)

The dragon is a beaut. I love the way the head pops off of the sky. I think, though the focus is the face, the neck could use more of that treatment, because it's a little too soft focus right now. The colors in the neck are also picking up a lot of the tree colors in the background, which softens the look up too. Still a fantastic update, though.

    How's the dragon rider coming?

Hello, Shane, Wonderful dragon. Love its rough look. all these old wounds, cracks, protruding pricks are great. I like its surreal eye. it makes it look sinister and abstract. I wonder how it would look with a very alarmingly realistically painted, very alive eye, looking from the corner of the eyelid or something. It can have very many subtle expression in it, like it its watching us, smiling at us, preparing to shock. But it would be a totally different dragon. This one doesn't need somebodies affections, it's a very self-sufficient dragon .
And I love the feeling of cool, not cheery day in your painting. Great combination of strict, modest colors. I enjoyed it a lot. Just have a very clear impression of unfriendly, untouched nature in it.
    Thanks, I saved it
    Sveta
Bdfoster, unfortunately, i don't have the honor to know you closely, and it sounds very presumptuous, but you are so crazy .

    hey shane,
nice dragon image - like where it's going, although i wonder why the eye is so durn tiny....perhaps a bit bigger and a smidge lower since it's lookin' like that eye is cresting the cranial vault rather than sitting within it. same for the nostril/nare and the proximity to the roots of the teeth - just seem to be to close to each other - just a bit higher and more proximal to the body. a texture brush for scales will help define form in the neck, but i really do enjoy this as it stands. a good study. one final thing - allow that lower swatch of trees to dive behind the body rather than abruptly stop an 1/8" away from the dragon's chest.
    all the best!

i hear (ian mccaig gnommon DVD perhaps?) that if you get the head and hands right, the rest of the figure can be forgiven. But the rest of the figures are really gorgeous as well! Thanks you for posting your sketches... This levels the playing field with regard to busting out some REALLY sweet hands on something that is just a sketch. This is such an inspirational thread that i just can't do anything but enthusiastically praise. great work!

    Heya's,

    crazy3dman thanks man!

bRØk3n_sPiRiT thanks - yeah, the background was almost more fun than the dradon

bdfoster Mwhahahahah! It's all part of my crafty sinister marketing campaign! That aside, the dragon was really more of a sketch, and to be honest, I doubt I'll be getting back to it anytime soon, but you gave me some things to think about on it. Thanksee kind sur!

sve You bust me up! I love your parting shot at bdfoster! HA! Interesting that you picked up on the "unfriendly" aspect of the painting, as I was feeling decidedly unfriendly the day I painted it. Ah, well. Emotional turmoil is good for the pallet, so they say

redehlert heya buddy. Thanks for the comments. The nose and eye placement are intentional. I play around with that sometimes to see how things look. No real reason other than gits and shiggles, but I fear that if I moved them around some, he'd lose some of his inherent nastiness, and we can't have that

Also, you're dead on about the trees - I didn't even notice until you mentioned it.

guggenmaneuver Thanks for the kudos on the hands. They're actually one of the main points that I'm the most insecure about and work the hardest on.

Iron Titan heh - thanks, glad you like 'im

    ------------

    Okay, on with the show:

Here we have the bad guy sketch (evil sword wielding wizard type dude with animated semi living armor):
    Pencil in sketchbook, roughly 8x11

And here's where I ended last night after I moved into Painter:

    More to come...

    Cheers,
    ~Oreg.

i love that sketch of the guy - the sword is tight, the hand is great, and the gesture is cocky. semi-living armor? hope it's not the cod piece! lol. seriously cool idea - like the tattoo'd guy in the movie elektra.
push those mountains and trees back farther - less darks, more subtle hue transitions - to set the foreground characters better. i think i'd also make his head rise up higher than the mountains so as to be 'bigger and better', but that's all personal.
    cheers!
    d

[edit] yeah, the more i think about it, if his cockiness is our focus, then the mountains and trees should lead the eye toward his eyes. try playin' around with the composition a bit more to see what visual triggers occur.

Hey, Shane! I thought I'd commented on the dragon, but evidently hadn't.

He is definately cocking his head with that "hmm, I hear the unmistakable 'pad, pad, pad' of lunch..." look. Very fresh, especially with the Yosemite-like backdrop. I think I'm with sve regarding the eye, as the color really stands out in the image. And I'm with bd in being unable to purchase too many spices without "Oreganizing" (v: contemplating other CA members).

I am so looking forward to seeing the bear-chested piece finished. Those hills are luscious.

    Edit: I can't believe I misspelled "oreganizing"!

Hiya, cool stuff. I like the EVIL WIZARD GUY Great pose. IMO the elbow olding the swrod looks a bit odd, but that might be because of the iron cloth covering it, somehow it makes the joint overturned. The armour is a really cool idea.

I dig the girl in the painter pic, very good pose. I am not so sure about the composition in the 2nd pic. I d make the image higher. They look a bit squeezed in the frame. Also, though the characters are not centered, the whole pic looks very centered. Would experiment and move the both of them around the frame and look for better spots.

Otherwise, really like the idea. Wanna see more of it. Keep it up and posted

Oh, Shane, such a beautiful pieces, one after another. I love both version B@W and colored. Just feel a little bit sad that in colored version all those wonderful textures and emotions from the pencils will probably disappear. Maybe not, though. Gorgeous lines, details, costumes and especially his face. Such a free spirit person. Obviously not our contemporary, too strong and independent face , too much of personality, wee all look like beaten dogs nowadays.
I can add a little note, if you want. His arm, holding the sword, looks a bit too thin in biceps area, a bit disturbing.
But overall, it's a very appealing piece.
The same goes to colored version, except it's smoother, and I'm hesitating to repeat my annoying motive. Just like roughness and textures, always. . Sorry.
But anyways, I adore these cold colors, they are soothing for my nerves, could you believe it? And your choice of landscape too, actually. Just love those ups and downs of the valley and hills.
Like the shocked face of the second character too. I just wish you made this painting bigger, I love details and don't want them to get lost in the process.
    Sveta
